Where does consciousness come from?

Does the brain create consciousness, or does it receive consciousness from somewhere beyond the physical body? Plato, Plotinus, and the Gnostics said consciousness doesn't begin in the brain. It descends into it. A single source. A light that dims as it falls, fragmenting through the spheres until it arrives here, in our flesh, at its faintest.From Plato and the Gnostic Monad to the modern science of the brain-as-receiver, ending where the oldest texts and the strangest medical data point at the same thing.
