Ύδωρ (edor) in ancient Greek meant ‘water’. In modern Greek, only the adjectives and some combined words remain intact. No verbs. In English however, the verb arrived shorty after  the French chemist Joseph Louis Proust coined the word in the 1880s, made from the Greek one and a French suffix. I guess before that the closest we had in English was ‘quench’ or ‘moist’ but feel free to send in any other words you might be aware of used in that time . ΥΔΩΡ/HYDRATE

The letter B in Greek is pronounced V. Keep that. Βους (vous) in both ancient and modern Greek means cow, ox and bull. Βουκολος (voukolos) is a Shepard and βουκολικό (vouloliko) used to mean ‘the field where cows feed’. The word jumbed to Latin almost intact bucolicus and came to the English language meaning ‘pastoral’ until it caught up with the Greeks around the 17th century who have started using it to describe poetry dedicated to the beautiful countryside life. Τιθημι(tithimi) is an Ancient Greek verb meaning ‘I place’ , ‘I position’. In combination with the preposition Aπό (apo) it means ‘I put away, I store, I safe keep’. The noun is αποθήκη (apothiki) and in modern Greek it still has the meaning the rest of the world dropped around the 14th century. A storage. Which was usually a cellar or a basement and made perfect conditions for medicine to be kept. So a person running a storage (in modern Greece) or  safe keeping medicine (in the English speaking world) is called ΑΠΟΘΗΚΑΡΙΟΣ/APOTHECARY

Γίγνομαι (gignome)in Ancient Greek and γίνομαι (ginome) in modern, means ‘I come into being ,I become’ From that, come the nouns γένος (genos) meaning ‘race’ and γέννηση (gennisi) meaning ‘birth’. The collective name for people born within a specific timeline is called γενεά (genea). The word might have came to the English through the Latin generare but the meaning stayed intact. ΓΕΝΕΑ/GENERATION

Hello, my name is Konstantinos Kavakiotis and I will be your host for today as Emmanuela wasn’t able to record this week.

 Από (apo)  is a preposition and it means ‘from’. Λόγος (logos) means ‘speech’. The combination of the two is a word that means speaking from within. From (and for) your side of things. Your point of view. When Plato wrote about the trial of Socrates, he named it after the philosopher’s self-defence speech; and up until the Elizabethan era, the word was used in the judicial system to mean exactly that.  Then Shakespeare came along and wrote in Ricard the third ‘ My lord there needs no such apologie’ and that’s the first time ever, the word was used to mean ‘I’m sorry’. I don’t know why I haven’t talked about this word so far. Maybe because I take it for granted and it took a pandemic to stop me. Θεαωμαι (Theaome) in Ancient Greek has three meanings. I watch, I observe, I contemplate . What is being watched is called-even today- θέαμα (Theama)and the place where you go to do all the above is called ΘΕΑΤΡΟ/THEATRE

Although this is a Greek word it wasn’t created by the Greeks and I say ‘created’ because it’s a combined one. Δεινός (dinos) means ‘terrible’ or in this case ‘mighty’. Σαύρα (savra) means ‘lizard’. In 1841 the palaeontologist Sir Richard Owen decided to name the fossils of extinct reptiles that had been found but had not been named. ΔΕΙΝΟΣΑΥΡΟΙ/DINOSAURS

Παλιν (palin) or πάλι (pali) means 'again'. Δρόμος (dromos) means 'road, street'. The combination of the two means that when you go up and down the same literal or metaphorical road you are doing a ΠΑΛΙΝΔΡΟΜΗΣΗ/PALINDROME
