Topic: Stay in Touch

Note from Aimee J.: Staying connected is so important!

Action: With the advent of technology, staying connected has become easier, yet we’re only doing the bare minimum. Relationships are like flowers. You have to nurture and take care of them. This doesn’t mean you have to contact everyone you know every day, but it is important that you contact them periodically. Sure, you may be friends on Facebook, or connected on LinkedIn, but do you really know how they are doing? One thing I do, is on a yearly basis, I write to all my family and friends and let them know how I’m doing. I don’t share those details on social media. It truly is a personal letter from me to them. And usually, my friends and family write back and catch me up on their lives. What can you do to stay in touch with the people in your life? Show them they are more than just an Instagram scroll in your life? Start small and be consistent. You’ll find your network and your relationships, will thrive and grow when you give it even just a little bit of attention periodically.

Topic: Be Open to Compromise

Note from Aimee J.: Compromise is a powerful tool that isn’t used enough.

Action: Often times we are so rigid in our stances that we don’t allow for any option other than our own. Unfortunately, those on the other side of a discussion may feel that same way too. When two sides of a discussion refuse to consider any possibility other than their own, no one wins. A compromise allows for both sides to win by making concessions. Keep in mind what is the purpose of the discussion? For you to win. I don’t think so. That’s not usually why a discussion happens in the first place. Remember that purpose and at least be open to the possibility of a compromise because

Action: In the race called life, you have to keep your blinders on. The moment you start looking at other people and wondering about them, you will lose yourself and slow down, if not stumble and fall. When you start to look at the other racers, you will begin to compare and that will be your downfall. You don’t know what obstacles and hurdles were in their race. You’re looking at their 20th lap and comparing it to your 5th. Run your own race.

You can win your own race, but not someone else’s.
Keep your eyes forward, and wear your blinders.

Note from Aimee J.: Beware! “That’s the way it has always been done,” is a dangerous phrase.

Action: The moment you hear the phrase, “that’s the way it has always been done,” I want you to challenge the speaker of that phrase. Why has it always been done that way? Take a minute to consider the possibilities of making a change. Are there new advancements that would make things better? What are the pros and cons of making a chance.

“That’s the way it has always been done,” is one of the biggest enemies of progress. Whether it is at your job, on a project, or in your life. Don’t let it stand unchallenged.

Action: Just as it was important yesterday when we talked about knowing your weaknesses, it is also important to know when you are wrong. Being able to admit when you’re wrong, takes strength. More respect is given to those who not only know when they’re right but can admit when they are wrong as well. It takes confidence and strength of character to do so. There is a humility in it that brings out an honesty in you.

Topic: Know Your Weaknesses

Note from Aimee J.: It is actually a strength to know where your weak spots are.

Action: Just as important as knowing your strengths, you should also identify, understand, and accept/address your weaknesses. You have to do a deep dive to evaluate yourself and where you are today, because it can and will change. I like to think of my life in eleven different parts:

1. Physical Health – your physical well being
2. Mental Health – your mental well being
3. Financial – your wealth or financial situation
4. Spiritual – your relationship to God or a higher power
5. Family Relationships – your connection to your family members
6. Friendships – your relationships with friends
7. Partnerships – your romantic or loving relationships with others
8. Recreation – hobbies and interests that make you happy that you do occasionally
9. Walk of Life – your work or passion in life that you spend significant time on
10. Personal Growth – how do you improve yourself
11. Surroundings – the environment that you spend the most time in

Evaluate how you are doing in each of these areas and be honest. Knowing where you “fall short” will help you figure out where you can improve or what you have to accept about yourself. This will also help you accept that you are enough. Doing this exercise does not negate that. How you define yourself is what is enough for this world.

Topic: Not Everything is Meant for You

Note from Aimee J.: Not everything is meant for you and that is okay.

Action: This one is tough, because we wish everything was meant for us. But sometimes that just isn’t the case. That’s why we don’t win at everything we try. That is why we have wins and losses. That’s why we aren’t all living our perfect lives. Life is figuring out not just what is meant for us, but what isn’t. Maybe you love to act, but you didn’t make it on broadway. That doesn’t mean you stop acting. Figure out what that means for you. Do you do regional theater? Do you go for television and movies? I don’t know. If you don’t pass a professional entrance exam that doesn’t mean you are a failure. It just might mean that maybe that isn’t for you. Maybe you have a different calling. What’s important is that you have to consider the possibility and figure it out for yourself. Don’t let others give you those answers.

You are a Human Being with Many Complicated Layers.

Action: Change it up. Sometimes when we have routines, it is good to change it up every once in a while. Changing your routine breaks up the monotony you may be feeling. It helps you revive your energy and keeps things interesting. Try a different lunch place. Try a new exercise. Bond with your friends and family with a new activity. One thing I do, is I try to be sponfreakintaneous, which means go wild and do something for yourself. See what happens when you change it up.
