Despite what many individuals and organizations think, aviation mechanics are neither magicians nor machines. The constant beat down of operations tempo can wear out even the most dedicated worker. This can lead to mistakes, slip ups, shortcuts, omissions, and mishaps.  Work burnout is a real thing; it's a psychological syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and reduced personal accomplishment.  Some may confuse burnout with depression, which is understandable since they have similar symptoms.  Burnout can and does lead to depression.  In some places, we glorify the burnout (i.e. we pride ourselves in being overworked), like it's a badge of pride.  On this episode, we explore how that mindset is developed and how that can have serious implications.
