Z and Keith Watched A Movie

The only Black lesbian film about Black lesbians in film known to humankind, The Watermelon Woman deserves more recognition. Not just for the unfortunate rarity of those combined identifiers but also for its unique mixing of genres/media, its humor, emotional vulnerability, the risks it take, and overall ambitiousness.

We kick off June with a film we've talked about doing since the inception of this podcast and which we both have recollections of. With performances far better than the material, it's not quite tragi-gay but does feel a bit like a D.A.R.E. presentation.

Don't let the title give you the idea that this has anything to do with the Land of Oz.

And to lighten things up Keith opines on religion.

Turns out this movie chronicles some real life events and askes the view to sympathize with a convicted murderer and sex offender. We were unaware of the film's relation to said events beforehand. But we stan Rupert Graves.

We kick off Z's month of "uncomfortable" selections with this 'based on real events' tale of adolescent feelings and poor adult choices, let's say.

Dare we say "neo-noir"?
In post-war Los Angeles, Ezekiel Rawlins is just trying to keep a roof over his head. Soon, a job opportunity presents itself that will change his life forever.
In his first of two appearances this month, Denzel brings Walter Mosely's Easy Rawlins to the screen. Although it deviates from the novel in some places, the plot unfolds in a crafty, writerly style.
Oh man, who am i writing for?
Don Cheadle steals the show in this one as Mouse. Lisa Nicole Carson (Coretta) blew us away in her limited screen time. And Barry Shabaka Henley is perfect as the Woodcutter.
