Stephen’s new book is called Rebirth Defect: My Journey From Catholic Altar Boy to Teen Atheist to Adult Christian Metal Evangelist and Back to Atheism. I know, take a deep breath. It’s his journey from Catholic schoolboy to rebelleous atheist teenager to 180 degree turn rebelleous evangelical heavy metal rocker to his current incarnation, “born fine the first time” atheist. He’s a schoolteacher in southwest Ohio, married for 27 years (she shared the journey), and has the odd “I hate money” ethos of someone who’s been in the music, literary, and teaching professions. Stephen also talks about his ongoing battle with anxiety and how Christianity was the worst thing for it.

Note that it was 5 p.m. my time (first sip of beer around 4:45) and 10 his, so John was a beverage or two ahead of me for our booze-up, I mean interview. John works with Atheist Ireland and Atheist Alliance International and that’s pretty inspiring.
