I was overdue to have a Christian on. This week’s guest was Pastor Matt Rittle of the Church of the Brethren. I had never heard of this small denomination (about 2000 Reason Rallies strong) before. I’d call it a more modern Mennonite, think all the nice things people think Jesus said. Pastor Rittle grew up in the church and during his college years decided to follow in his father’s footsteps to become a pastor.

The church is so small that he’s a part-time employee. His “flock” is in a small town West of Chicago.

This was my first pastor interview and I’m friends with Matt in real life so other than asking him if he’s read the entire Bible, I didn’t go with too many “gotcha” type questions. I didn’t get halfway through my questions so there probably will be a repeat visit.

In 1994, Dave Edwards’ sister Stephanie was murdered. She was a prostitute who had an ongoing relationship with former assistant Crown attorney Agnew Johnston. Johnston was convicted for soliciting sex from teenage prostitutes. Another man took the fall. Dave had a rough childhood with a stepfather who abused all three kids and a barely present mother. He was in and out of juvenile detention centers and that’s where he was when he heard about his sister’s death. This is his story.

Dave also hosts the Ehtheist Podcast, and we talked a little about his show as well as the challenges of being dad to an autistic son.

Zachrilege Cast #54 -- Morgan Stringer of NRR

The NRR interview set is complete. Morgan is the latest of the “four horsepeople” of the No Religion Required podcast. She’s a former evangelical who went to the horrific French Camp and somehow came out the other side. We talked about Mississippi and the insane laws, coming out as atheist and bisexual, her upcoming trip to study in Cambridge, whether she’ll leave the state the second she gets out of law school. Christopher Tanner and Chris Hanna are meant for each other -- at least in podcast terms. They started Cellar Door Skeptics last year after various attempts at podcasting/youtubing and it’s stuck. Hanna is the engineer with hearing loss who likes the science subject and has a mean guitar collection. Tanner is the former evangelical who’s a fertile so-and-so and doesn’t like beer but we will not put that against him. We talked about the show’s creation, coming up with a show that lets you talk about almost anything, and debating against the side that used to be your POV.
