  • The Art of Fostering Ignorance | Marc Ernest | فن تجهيل الشعوب | Podcast #17

Welcome to Tarab 3arab Podcast, where we delve into intriguing and thought-provoking discussions at the intersection of music and culture, with Pianist and thinker, Marc Ernest. In today's episode, we explore a unique facet of the music world – 'The Art of Fostering Ignorance.' Our journey begins by examining a prevalent trend among the Lebanese people, where musical works are often taken for granted without thorough analysis. Even when individuals do engage in analysis, it's often without critical scrutiny and can be superficial. This pattern of passive consumption and limited introspection raises important questions about the depth of understanding within the musical community. What's even more intriguing is the phenomenon where any attempt at criticism is met with a common retort: 'It is better than nothing.' But why is it better than nothing? Join us as we unpack the layers of this sentiment, questioning the cultural dynamics and societal attitudes that perpetuate a cycle of musical appreciation without the necessary depth of examination. From the subtle biases in musical education to the impact of cultural stereotypes on musical expression, we invite you to join the conversation and challenge the status quo for a more enlightened and inclusive musical experience for all."

How Your Brain Perceives Music | Albert Moukheiber | Podcast #13
EPISODE #13 of #Tarab3arabPodcast, with Dr. Albert Moukheiber, neuroscientist, professor, and clinical psychologist. How Your Brain Perceives, is an episode dedicated to discuss all matters relating to perception, psychoacoustics, psychology, and reality in regards to music. To perceive music is an act that only we, on an individual level, can feel. But we do share what we call an experience. How do we do that? And most importantly, WHY?Here to unfold all of that, be it as an introduction to the matter, Dr. Albert Moukheiber. After a degree in psychology from the American University of Beirut, he continued his studies in France where he obtained a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Paris 6 and a masters degree in clinical psychology, in Paris 5 and Paris 81.With other neuroscientists, he founded the Chiasma association which organises conferences and workshops to explain the brain mechanisms that underlie our reasoning and our vision of the world. In 2019, he published the book Your brain is playing tricks on you in which he addresses the functioning of the brain and cognitive biases by affirming that “the less we know a subject, the less we are able to measure the extent to which we do not master the subject in question . According to him, knowledge of these mechanisms would make it possible to rebuild society based “on a common base of reality”, particularly with regard to vaccines and global warming. It studies the issue of false information in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Early Maronite & Byzantine Music | Fr. Geha & Johnny Kassis | Podcast #10
EPISODE #10 of #Tarab3arabPodcast with two referential figures in the world of liturgical music, Mr. Johnny Kassis and Fr. Youhanna Geha, who will embark us on a journey to discover the genesis and the development of both Maronite and Byzantine liturgies. THE MARONITES:The Maronite Church is a branch of the Syro-Antiochean Church and one of the earliest distinct eastern churches. The term “Maronite” derives from the monastery of Bayt Marün (House of Maron) built in the fifth centuryin the valley of the Orontes, near Apameus, in northern Syria. Maronites believe that this monastery was built in honor of Saint Maron (d. 410), an anchorite’ who lived on a mountain near Apameus; his austerity and miracles made him a celebrity.^ His followers took part in the doctrinal discussions ofthe period, which led to their persecution by other Christian sects. In 517, three hundred fifty monks from the monastery of Saint Maron were massacred on their way to a pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Simeon Stylites in the Syrian desert. Later persecutions at the hands of their religious adversaries, and Persian and Arab invaders of Syria in 611 and 634 respectively, forced them to migrate for refuge to the inaccessible Lebanese mountains. The great majority settled in Lebanon and developed as an independent religious community, in which secular and clerical powers were combined; some fled to Cyprus. Their final exodus into Mount Lebanon occurred during the tenth and eleventh centuries.BYZANTINE MUSIC:Byzantine music (Greek: Βυζαντινή μουσική) originally consisted of the songs and hymns composed for the courtly and religious ceremonial of the Byzantine Empire and continued, after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, in the traditions of the sung Byzantine chant of Eastern Orthodox liturgy. The ecclesiastical forms of Byzantine music are the best known forms today, because different Orthodox traditions still identify with the heritage of Byzantine music, when their cantors sing monodic chant out of the traditional chant books such as the Sticherarion, which in fact consisted of five books, and the Irmologion.Byzantine music did not disappear after the fall of Constantinople. Its traditions continued under the Patriarch of Constantinople, who after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 was granted administrative responsibilities over all Eastern Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Empire. During the decline of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, burgeoning splinter nations in the Balkans declared autonomy or autocephaly from the Patriarchate of Constantinople. The new self-declared patriarchates were independent nations defined by their religion. In this context, Christian religious chant practiced in the Ottoman Empire, in, among other nations, Bulgaria, Serbia and Greece, was based on the historical roots of the art tracing back to the Byzantine Empire, while the music of the Patriarchate created during the Ottoman period was often regarded as post-Byzantine. This explains why Byzantine music refers to several Orthodox Christian chant traditions of the Mediterranean and of the Caucasus practiced in recent history and even today, and this article cannot be limited to the music culture of the Byzantine past.
