Rory Doyle is the winner of the 2019 Zeiss Photography Award.
A native of Maine, Rory moved to the delta town of Cleveland, Mississippi to teach when he happened on a sight that struck him; African-American cowboys on horseback.
He went on to gain the trust of locals and began work on his photo story “The Delta Hill Riders.” The essay has also earned Rory recognition with the Smithsonian Photo Contest Grand Prize as well as gallery exhibitions world-wide.

Cinematographer Josh Silfen dreamed of making movies from an early age which eventually led him to NYU film school to study cinematography. He met director Emily Ting through mutual friends at NYU, and has collaborated with her on shorts, commercials and her first feature. Emily Ting’s second feature, “Go Back to China” premiered at SXSW and follows a spoiled Chinese-American who is compelled to return to mainland China to work in her father’s toy factory.

On today’s episode, we spoke with documentary cinematographer Amy Bench. We initially spoke with Amy about shooting Deresha Kyi’s doc short “Trans in America: Texas Strong” screened here in Austin. Amy directed her own film premiering at SXSW in the Texas Shorts competition.
“A Line Birds Cannot See” is an animated documentary about a 12-year-old setting out across the desert, escaping kidnapers on a search for her mother and a place where they can be safe. After our interview, Amy learned her film won the Texas Shorts Special Jury Award.

We begin our extensive coverage of the SXSW Film Festival with guest host Snehal Patel, Zeiss Cine Sales Manager, Americas, interviewing Ava Berkofsky, Cinematographer.
Ava Berkofsky was born in Wales, raised in the mountains and cities of California, and is now a Los Angeles and NYC-based Director of Photography. Her background in fine art and documentary photography informs her textured approach to cinematography, capturing the nuance of place, time, and subjectivity.
Ava is also the lead DP of HBO’s INSECURE, where she worked with Director/EP Melina Matsoukas to create and execute the look and feel of the show. She holds an MFA from the American Film Institute.

As an award-winning writer, director, producer, editor and actor, Ann Lupo wears a lot of hats. A graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, she has worked as an editor on music videos, commercials and a feature documentary for CNN.
Her feature film debut is In Reality, a romantic autobiographical film on love and longing that’s funny and poignant mixing fantasy and reality.
For In Reality, Ann wrote, directed, produced, edited and starred….and has even taken on self-distribution of her film. In Reality has screened at thirteen film festivals domestically and internationally, winning nine awards including the Jury and Audience Award at the Austin Film Festival and the Special Jury Mention at the Los Angeles Film Festival.

He is now the Coordinator of Multimedia Journalism in the Masters in Communication Program at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and the Director of the Vision Project, a multi-faceted organization dedicated to promoting investigative journalism, photography, multi-media and education. The Jacob Burns Film Center, north of New York City is a growing hub for cinema education and media literacy giving a platform to emerging filmmakers within its Creative Culture Fellowship program.
Graduate-level students are mentored in developing their storytelling skills as they produce two film projects during their time at Creative Culture. The program and its sponsors have invested in furthering the careers of 22 promising filmmakers.
The week of the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, we stopped by to chat with Sean Weiner, the Director of Creative Culture —the key mentor for the fellows— and three of the young filmmakers in the program: Jalena Keane-Lee, Moira Fett and Maya Cueva about the development of their projects and their skill sharing experiences at the Burns Media Center.
