  • Returning to Public Executions Will Bring Back Balance
For the first time since 1937, Americans will be able to watch their government carry out a death sentence by firing squad when Major Nidal Hasan's execution is live-streamed on December 3rd, Pentagon officials announced. Hasan committed a mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, gunning down fellow soldiers while shouting "Allahu Akbar" — an act the Obama administration initially classified as workplace violence rather than terrorism, a decision the hosts call one of the most poorly handled events in recent military history. The hosts argue public executions are the civilizational default in Western history, stretching from the Old Testament through Rome, medieval Europe, and early America, and that their elimination coincided historically with women's suffrage and the advent of television. They contend the cultural pendulum is swinging back from decades of mercy toward criminals toward a renewed demand for visible justice, driven by communities that have lost faith in government's willingness to punish evil — pointing to cycles of retaliatory violence in Chicago, cartel-run territories in Mexico, and the rise of mafia-style alternative governments as consequences of government justice failure. One host, a Marine veteran, argues that public execution demonstrates government competence and lethality, deterring vigilantism by proving citizens do not need to take justice into their own hands. The hosts draw a sharp distinction between public execution — a sterile, ritualized, government-sanctioned act following trial and conviction — and lynching or mob justice, which they call the toxic result of a citizenry that has abandoned confidence in government. They warn the pendulum can swing too far, citing the Roman Colosseum and the French Revolution's mass drownings of Christians as examples of spectacle replacing justice.

  • Spitting on the Grave of C.S. Lewis: How Copyright Became Literary Colonialism
Meryl Streep has been cast as the voice of Aslan in Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of The Magician's Nephew, reimagining Narnia as a rock opera with an Aslan design inspired by David Bowie — featuring mismatched eyes, a red facial scar, fur mixed with feathers, and a more griffin-like appearance than a traditional lion. The casting and redesign sparked intense reactions, but the deeper argument is that copyright law itself is the villain. Under the original 14-year copyright term, The Chronicles of Narnia would have entered the public domain in 1978, allowing anyone to tell an Aslan story — faithful or revisionist — with fans choosing which version to support, the way Sherlock Holmes is adapted every year by different creators. Instead, perpetual corporate copyright extensions lobbied by Disney mean the biggest, most corrupt corporations control beloved IP and can defile it with no recourse for fans. Netflix could make more money with a faithful Narnia adaptation but is choosing to desecrate beloved stories for ideological reasons, violating their own fiduciary duty. Copyright doesn't protect human artists — even the major AI settlement money goes to corporations, not creators. The argument is that copyright as it exists is a force of corporate control over human storytelling, preventing the literary commons that produced Shakespeare, Homer, and every fairy tale, and that authors who defend intellectual property are unknowingly tempting their own grandchildren to sell out their legacy to the highest bidder.

  • Your Gun Can't Save You From the Pentagon's SI Drones
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced plans for a new four-star autonomous warfare command — dubbed Auto War Com — intended to institutionalize autonomous systems, robotics, drones, and AI-enabled warfare throughout the joint force, with an implementation target of October 1st, 2027, subject to congressional action. The strategy is a "high-low mix" of sophisticated traditional weapons operating alongside masses of inexpensive autonomous systems that can maintain pressure on an adversary without trading million-dollar weapons for thousand-dollar threats. The cost asymmetry is already urgent: a $1 million Patriot missile intercepting a $20,000 Iranian drone is a losing financial exchange. The discussion explores deep narrative and cultural implications for science fiction writers — the moral weight when one drone operator in Kansas can kill thousands through perfectly obedient autonomous swarms, the collapse of masculine identity when a concealed Glock offers no defense against a drone, the Order 66 scenario where perfectly loyal systems switch allegiance when control changes hands, the Battle of New Orleans parallel where war ends but jammed drones keep fighting, and the Genghis Khan precedent where mass killing through proxies is not new. Authors are urged to probe these moral ramifications in fiction before the next real war forces society to confront them unprepared.

  • How to Sell to Adults Who Will Never Grow Up
Toys R Us announced 120 new standalone stores for the 2026 holiday season, bringing its total to 160 locations across the United States in partnership with Go Retail Group. The brand filed Chapter 11 in 2017 under $5 billion of debt after private equity plundered its assets, closed all US stores in 2018, and was revived when WHP Global took a controlling stake in March 2021. Macy's partnership shops launched in 2022 and drove first-quarter toy sales 15 times higher than the prior period. But the growth engine is not children's toys—it is adult collectibles. Adults now represent 55% of toy sales measured in dollars, buying Lego sets, Funko Pops, and boxed items they never open, displaying them on shelves that could hold collectible books instead. The opportunity for authors is to create premium, collectible editions: leather-bound hardbacks, signed and numbered limited runs, and visually striking special editions that readers display as trophies. Brandon Sanderson's most successful Kickstarter sold leather-bound editions of a book fans had already read and purchased, generating millions at $150 per copy. Authors starting out can create signed and numbered editions of 25 copies that become instantly collectible at $100 each. Consistency in book design—uniform trim sizes, matching paper color, cohesive spine design across a series—is essential for building a shelf-worthy collection that readers want to own and display. The diamond-water paradox from Aristotle explains the opportunity: just as water is ubiquitous and cheap while diamonds are rare and expensive, authors can sell the e-book version for mass consumption while creating a scarce, premium physical edition that superfans will pay premium prices to own.

The US economy posted 5.1% GDP growth, the highest in years, with real median household income reaching a record $87,460 in calendar year 2025, up 2.6% from $85,000, marking the highest level since the Census Bureau series began in 1967. The official poverty rate fell to 10.2% for 34.5 million people, the lowest ever recorded, and child poverty dropped to 13.4%. According to The Economist, AI has created one million new jobs in the US, payrolls are up 162,000, and unemployment sits at 4.1%. The episode argues that AI is following the same pattern as every labor-saving invention in history — the tractor destroyed farm jobs but created two city jobs for every one lost — and that Democrats who need an economic crisis to win elections are now pivoting from the failed "AI will take your jobs" narrative to "AI will kill you." Diesel prices are rising not because of domestic policy but because Ukraine is flying drones with 100-pound bombs into Russian diesel refineries, and Trump has asked Ukraine to lay off.
The episode then examines John B. Calhoun's Universe 25 mouse utopia experiment, where a colony of mice with unlimited food and no predators collapsed socially despite never running out of resources, producing "the beautiful ones" who groomed themselves, "clusterers" who fed only where the crowd fed, and aggressive packs. The hosts draw direct parallels to American society: birth rates at series lows despite record prosperity, rising isolation, and shifting genre preferences that map onto the mouse colony's survivor classes — romance and romantasy for the beautiful ones, horror and thrillers for the aggressive packs, faith and homesteading books for the tunnelers, and children's books for those who still have children.

  • Democrats Pick Their Next Boogeyman to Regulate AI Into Oblivion
An investigation into the viral resignation of an Anthropic AI researcher who quit after roughly six weeks at the company and previously worked as an activist on multiple Democratic political campaigns, with his resignation thread — stating that AI companies are "racing straight to self-improving super intelligence and gambling with our lives" — surpassing 155 million views and generating same-day coverage from the Wall Street Journal and Axios. The report characterizes the incident as part of a coordinated public relations and lobbying effort to build political support for aggressive AI regulation, arguing that major AI labs benefit from regulation that raises barriers to competitors while doing little to constrain Chinese open-source AI developers not bound by the same rules. The analysis places the story in the context of a recurring pattern of decade-scale public fear campaigns — citing global cooling, ozone depletion, climate change, and COVID-19 as prior examples — and argues that AI industry leaders are incentivized to publicize alarming claims about their own technology because they lack a durable competitive moat and want to lock in developer and enterprise usage through regulatory barriers to switching providers.

  • One Year Without Charlie Kirk
A one-year retrospective on the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk, examining how his death and the public reactions to it — described as ranging from grief and religious revival to open celebration and justification of the killing — reshaped political and cultural discourse. The discussion covers reports of a religious revival among young men following his death, incidents of protesters allegedly celebrating his killing outside a Turning Point USA women's conference and confronting attendees, differing views on political violence between the political left and right, and warnings that continued provocation risks triggering a sudden, severe escalation rather than a gradual one. The segment also addresses roughly 60,000 arrests in the United Kingdom over online speech violations, debates over the historical and theological relationship between Islam and the West on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, and calls for de-escalation, religious renewal, and restraint from political violence on all sides.

  • How SSRIs Change What Readers Read
Citing CDC National Center for Health Statistics data, a discussion reports that 24.9% of U.S. women took medication for mental health reasons in the prior 12 months compared to 13.4% of men, with antidepressant use among women rising from 13.8% in 2009-2010 to 18.6% in 2017-2018, and reaching nearly 25% among women 60 and older. The segment cites multiple peer-reviewed studies, including a 2009 British Journal of Psychiatry paper and 2017 Journal of Affective Disorders survey, reporting that 44% to 52% of surveyed patients on SSRIs experienced emotional blunting, alongside a 2025 study finding 81.8% of women on sertraline met criteria for sexual dysfunction correlated with reduced emotional intensity. The hosts argue this widespread medication-driven blunting of emotional and sensory range is reshaping fiction demand toward simpler, more extreme, and more explicit content, tying it to the growth of AI-generated romance, the blurring of romance and erotica genres following Amazon's ban on erotica as a marketing category, and shifting book-buying demographics that show women purchasing a majority share of fiction. The episode also addresses a breaking child homicide case, with the hosts explicitly arguing that mental illness or drug use should not mitigate culpability for murder, that capital punishment should apply regardless of an insanity plea, and drawing historical and religious arguments in support of capital punishment as a deterrent.

  • Clean Comedian Nate Bargatze Sets Guinness World Record for Most Tickets Sold on a Comedy Tour
Comedian Nate Bargatze sold 2,045,000 tickets on his Big Dumb Eyes World Tour, setting a Guinness World Record for the most tickets ever sold on a stand-up comedy tour, according to Guinness World Records, which dated the record to August 16th in Toronto across 129 venues spanning a run from April 6th to August 16th, 2026. Guinness presented the certificate on stage at Scotiabank Arena, as reported by USA Today. The tour surpassed comedian Jeff Dunham's previous record of nearly two million tickets sold across 386 venues over a roughly 35-month run from 2007 to 2010, with Bargatze crossing two million tickets in just 16 months and 10 days, less than half the time. Bargatze is known for a self-effacing, family-oriented, and explicitly clean comedic style free of profanity or explicit content, distinguishing his act from more explicit mainstream stand-up comedy. The record signals a broader resurgence in mainstream demand for clean, family-friendly comedy content following comedians like Bill Cosby and Brian Regan, and reflects shifting audience preferences toward less explicit entertainment across large-scale touring comedy.
