  • 484: Superman is a Movie

Superman is out, and we have seen it, so now we spoil it in an episode-long review/debate! Some of use loved it, some of us opposite-of-loved it, some of us are undecided and need to watch a video essay so that we can make that our opinion of the movie. Come, won’t you, to listen to three nerds argue about a comic book movie? At the end of the day, at least, there’s one thing that we can all agree on: The Mighty Crabjoys suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

  • 483: “He’s Complicated!” and other Shooter Stories

Jim Shooter — the legendary writer and editor behind reviving the Legion of Super-Heroes and other DC titles in the ’60s, then his reign as Editor-in-Chief at Marvel during their ’70s-’80s hot streak, founder of Valiant Comics, and much more — sadly passed away on June 30th at the age of 73. So we’re taking a look back at the true titan’s legacy, his career and the history he made, and the “complicated” reputation he earned in the comic industry. Everyone has a story about Shooter, and we share some of our favourites from the comic biz’s wild history! Including a few personal near-brushes with The Tall One, discussing his works that left a particular impression on us, and his truly unbelievable origin story as a 13-year-old comic reader who was hired by DC and became one of their most important writers!

But first, we warm up with a very weird round of Character Storm, where one of us picks a name and the other two have to invent a character around it! Find out just who is… Rickety Tin? The Six Shooter? Dazz Lurhman? And a charming little tangent about the, uh, leading causes of death in Victorian London leads us to the sensational character find of 2025: FISTULA!

  • 482: Hershey Kisses, and So On

I am the law, and so can you! This week, we are– inexplicably, unexplainedly, baffingly– taking the time to watch Judge Dredd, the 1995 Sylvester Stallone-led flop. What did we think? Did we love it? Are you about to listen to an hour of the three of us just gushing about Rob Schneider? No.

But first, in the Warmup, we let you know about (mostly) some of our favourite comic book-based Youtube channels! Because when you’re done listening to this, you might need something just a touch more thought out. Maybe. Perhaps. Here are some links!

  • 481: My Jesus is Bigger than your Jesus

Ok. THIS one is a bit of a meandering conversation.
This week’s episode starts with a Dad game (What if Bucky was Annihilus’ dad and other fun questions).
And the main topic is comics and authoritarianism. And we DO discuss that. We do. But we jump all over and it just becomes a fun romp through various fields of things, jumping back & forth to authoritarianism and back out again.
Hear about Tom Cruise, murder robots, Herman Minnesota and the driest sandwiches in America, DC Decisions, Saga and the schedule of that comic, Julian Chambliss, STOPP, Death of Stalin, and how a discussion of how a friend’s online religious post in the US led to talking about Stallone’s armwrestling masterpiece ‘Over the Top’.
Strap in for the ride and join us, won’t you?

  • 480: Bruce Said Bronson Lives in Boston

It’s Dramatic Reading time once again — that’s when we perform a classic comic radio-drama style while commenting and making jokes about it throughout! This time we take you back to 1972’s The Brave and the Bold #99, where Batman rents the old Wayne summer home from… Bruce Wayne… himself, for some reason! There he finds his parents’ ashes and an elaborate plan to resurrect them from the dead! But before he can hatch a plan, he has to contend with nightly sleep-walking possessions by OLD MANUEL, a harpooner of local legend! Sounds like a fine time for a shaggy-haired Barry Allen to come visit, and the aforementioned brave and bold heroes are soon sunk into a supernatural plot that might break DC canon as we know it! Can Batman overcome the ghosts of his dead parents? Can The Flash be quick enough to outrace the pull of Hell? Will one or both of our heroes mix the Wayne’s ashes with booze and drink it? Hey, also, why doesn’t Thomas Wayne have a moustache, and since when were the Waynes cremated? FIND OUT! RIGHT NOW! On this week’s Zero Issues.

  • 479: Doctor Nosexy, and other Legitimate Medical Professionals

Doctor doctor, what do I do, I’ve got a bad case of talkin’ ’bout doctors! Also nurses, and medical professionals (and the medical field) in general! This week, we go over some very obscure medical characters (for example: Dr. Death, the original boneitis-haver!), Merk quizzes us on what is the made-up medical comic (spoiler: even the real ones sound dumb), and we imagine what it would be like if Frasier were part of the Marvel Universe. So, basically, just your average episode!
But before all of that, we take some time to discuss the recent passing of Peter David, as well as highlight some of the amazing stories that he wrote throughout his lengthy career as a writer.
So grab an out of date magazine and get comfy, because you’ll be waiting for about 45 minutes!

  • 478: I’m Gonna Say Longer Dick

How many comic characters have been replaced? Whether temporarily, for a good stint, or permanently? Quite a few apparently, when the boys delve into the topic and start uncovering a slew of them. From Blue Beetle to Dr Fate, Ms Marvel to Green Lantern(s). Then there’s the Thors and the Spider-Guys. They go pretty in depth into the numerous replacements for Captain America and Batman. By this point they’re asking ‘who hasn’t been replaced?!’
All that plus a Bry led replacement quiz!
Oh, the hosts…. they’re not who they say they are!

  • 477: Return of the Revenge of the News!

This week it’s ALL NEWS, with endless comic and pop culture developments to dig through! Including: The Buffy revival and Sarah Michelle Gellar reveal the new Vampire Slayer! Amazon Prime absolutely isn’t making a Judge Dredd series with Karl Urban, so definitely don’t obnoxiously demand it from them until they actually do, haha! IDW announces even more TMNT spin-off comics including Shredder, Casey Jones, and a first-ever reprint run of Peter Laird and Jim Lawson’s currently-unfinished “Volume Four”! Krysten Ritter is back to knock some sense into Hell’s Kitchen as Jessica Jones in the next season of “Daredevil”! “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has just wrapped filming, and the DCU train is picking up speed! The Mario movie sequel will be called “Super Mario World”, suggesting potential and unforgivable Birdo erasure! The Eisner nominations have been announced, and they include Tom King, a whole slew of Absolute DC heroes, James Tynion IV’s Department of Truth, Santos Sisters, PeePee PooPoo (tee-hee), and even more!

Oh yeah, and the trailers! We dig into the new teasers and trailers and teaser-trailers for SUPERMAN (and its many, many characters), IRONHEART (the series Marvel forgot they made), PEACEMAKER SEASON TWO (I’m seeing double – four John Cenas), and even a possible glimpse at SPIDER-NOIR (provided they’re not all AI fakes)! All that and some serious journalism from ComicsBeat covering the financial crimes of a former IDW president! This one’s got it all!!
