Zia Comics Nerdcast

Walter Welsh was born and raised in a small town where he grew up around sports, cars, and motorcycles. He always had a passion for movies, science fiction and art. He went from basketball coach to college football athlete to competitive bodybuilding to portrait painting ... and now to special effects. He thinks he has finally found what he loves by creating monsters and painting works of art that come to life. He is a two time runner-up on the popular SyFy show "Face Off" (seasons 10 and 13).  Walter's special effects make ups have been some of the best on the show each time he was a contestant.

We were able to get Walter to tell us about how his past led him to his current career as a special effects artist.  He tells us how it was working those long hours on Face Off that were edited down to mere minutes for the show.

Ethan Hawke and Ben Dickey were in El Paso to promote their new movie, Blaze. It is a biographical movie about the little known singer, Blaze Foley. You can really tell both these guys are fans of the music and passionate about the movie.

Ethan and Ben fill us in on why they chose Blaze Foley as the subject for their movie. They even tell us the story of how Ethan came about casting Ben as the lead.

Most importantly, Ethan clears the air about the comment he made during an interview at the Locarno Film Festival. A majority of the press took his comments as him taking a jab at superhero movies. That couldn't be farther from the truth. His intentions were to spotlight the economic challenges for today's filmmakers. When questioned, Ethan sad "There is no such thing as high and low art. Those are the snake-oil terms of salesmen and scholars who profit from hawking their definitions." Ethan and Ben are self professed nerds and love superhero movies.

We thank Ethan and Ben for giving us the Blaze Foley story and wish the film much success.

Jake the Snake Roberts is an iconic Hall of Fame Wrestler.  He is known for a couple of things.  One is the fact he would bring his snake, Damien, into the ring after defeating an opponent to ridicule them.  The other thing he is famous for is his devastating finishing move, the DDT.  Jake invented this simple, effective, and brutal move.  There was no kicking out of a pin after being on the receiving end of a DDT.

Jake has been the topic of documentary, "The Resurrection of Jake the Snake".  Jake had fallen into alcoholism and drug abuse at an early age.  He was going down a bad road leading to an early death when Diamond Dallas Page (DDP) took him in and helped turn his life around.  DDP introduced him to yoga and healthy eating.  Jake has been clean and sober ever since and is much happier as a result.
