Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than other. Enter coach, educator and mentor Tom Rettig. We've been talking the last few weeks about his life and career spanning 52-years of coaching. We last left off with his arrival in Tipp City to teach and coach with 1982 being his first year as the Girls basketball coach.

In this episode we talk about important things; first and foremost, what was with the perm?  Yes, the man's hair was rather memorable. Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than others. Such is the case with Tom Rettig, Educator, Coach and friend. We add to the title in this episode with: Girl Dad. As we progress in our time line, Tom has arrived at Tippecanoe in 1979 as an English teacher and Boys Basketball assistant as well as assistant football and baseball coach. An eagerness to move back to SW Ohio had led him to the job and in 1982 a unique opportunity.  As former coach Jane Tollefson was pregnant, Tom makes the choice to coach the Tippecanoe Girls basketball program. One lure: being able to coach his daughters for a few years.  Join us as we discuss this period of time early on with the Red Devils program and also speak upon some other topics of the day and hear more great stories from a 50+ year coaching career. 

Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting. Such is the case of Tom Rettig teacher and coach. In an extra large 1-hour episode we continue the latest biography podcast with the long time educator. We pick up from last week's conversation and move to the formative years of his career in the 1960's & 70's. Our conversation starts with his time at Bowling Green State University and balancing a relationship and then young family with education and then work. Early on, Tom took on challenges in wanting to find opportunities where he could advance but was also in a good fit of being needed. From Lucas High School and coaching baseball, to coaching tennis at Dayton Fairview and then boys basketball at Holland Springfield and then Cardinal Stritch in Toledo. Through it all, Tom was attending coaching camps and working camps to increase his knowledge and to gain experience in the coaching fraternity. This included working Don Donaher's camp at the University of Dayton and then, getting an opportunity in the 1970's to work legendary coach John Wooden's UCLA camp and forging a relationship with the Wizard of Westwood. Thoughts of a college coaching career, however, fizzled when he wasn't able to deliver a future college basketball hall of famer as a bonus to his employment. One of my favorite teachers, I've been blessed to keep a cordial relationship with Tom since high school when I first accidentally wondered into his classroom by mistake as a freshman. The following year, I did belong in his class and it was a transformational year. His encouragement and support was key in the rest of my education.  We'll explore the entire story of Tom Rettig from growing up in Lima, Ohio to his gravitation towards educating and coaching. Our conversations will include stories and recollections from his career winning on the hard wood and his love affair with basketball as well as his passion for teaching and young people.  Ep.1 In this 38-minutes we catch up with Tom with an update on how he's currently doing and the origins of his want to teach and coach with plenty of fun stories a long the way. It was a crazy week last week of show throwing, teams spilling onto the field, coaches getting fired and fog!
