Everyone has a story, it's just that some are more interesting than others. So it is with coach, teacher, mentor and friend Tom Rettig, the Ohio Hall of Fame high school basketball coach and former Tippecanoe Red Devils girls basketball coach.  As we continue our second season, we come to a career cross roads as Tom's teams struggled in the late 1990's. The program however rebounded after an attempt to remove him as head coach in 1998. However, with friends, family, students and former players alike rallying around him (thanks to "Mrs. Coach") his job status was not in doubt after all.

From struggle to hard work and a rebound in talent, his Tippecanoe teams made a huge turn around in the years after. At least they did in the regular season. A couple of tough pills to swallow (as in tournament seeding draw pills) ended each season short despite promise and great expectation.  Follow along and listen to this week's episode and give us a share if you enjoy!

Such is the case of Hall of Fame Basketball Coach, Teacher, Mentor and Friend Tom Rettig.  We've been discussing the life & times of the coach, rolling through the years of his career, focusing mostly on his time with the Tippecanoe High School Girls Basketball team. In this episode we talk of some lean years during and in the immediate aftermath of his time as Athletic Director for the Red Devils. This period of time is marked by single digit wins, little tournament success and a trying and difficult period. However, as he explains it, it wasn't any less satisfying where it concerned effort, courage and the players he enjoyed.  Recorded for the first time face to face in his Tipp City residence, this 40-minutes was a real joy. Previous to this recording we'd spent some time in person for the first time in years enjoying a minor league baseball game and a few beers. From State runner-up to Final Four to then repeat 20-win seasons to another district finals team in 1989-90. Tom talks about the details of how the team came together despite, in his opinion, not necessarily liking one another all the time, dealing with off-the court rumors of trips to The Bug Inn or Lost C Lounge. An 18-game winning streak propelled the team to the State Final Four match-up against powerhouse Akron Hobin and then the Championship game against Millersburg West Holmes--a team with a 100+ game winning streak at the time. As we continue in telling the story about Hall of Fame basketball coach Tom Rettig, we now turn to some of those people who have known him over the years. Such is the case of Tippecanoe High School class of 1986 graduate Jim Dabbelt. Dabbelt is the author of The Dabbelt Report, the ultimate in promotion and recognition of girls high school basketball players in Ohio which he's produced since 2003. Dabbelt was a student of Tom's and was encouraged by him to be the team statistician in 1985-86 and has worked as a writer of high school, college and pro athletics over the years. It was Tom that encouraged him to put together Jim's passion for writing, sports and the girls game which was underserved in the journalistic world. He also had a front row seat for the 1985-86 season which had Tippecanoe in the State title game in Akron. Jim discusses his memories of that year in high school, the magical run they had and delivers some thoughts on athletics in general in this half hour.
