John 9:1-7

Imagine being blind your whole life, then suddenly seeing for the first time. That’s what happened to a man in John 9 when Jesus healed him. But while he gained sight, the religious leaders—so sure of their own wisdom—refused to see the truth right in front of them. Jesus said, “I am the Light of the World,” offering sight not just to the physically blind but to anyone willing to believe. This story challenges us to ask: Are we open to the light, or are we clinging to our own way of seeing things? Faith requires humility, courage, and a willingness to let Jesus change the way we see the world.

Ash Wednesday reminds us that flourishing comes when both authority and vulnerability are present in our lives. Drawing from Andy Crouch’s framework, this sermon explores how Jesus embodied both qualities when he rescued the woman caught in adultery. The religious leaders wielded authority without vulnerability, exploiting the woman for their own purposes. She, on the other hand, was entirely vulnerable, with no power to change her fate. Jesus, in contrast, took meaningful action while also sharing in her risk, standing with her despite the cost.

Lent invites us into this same tension. As we receive ashes and remember our mortality—“You are dust, and to dust you shall return”—we are also called to step into the authority Jesus gives. Repentance isn’t just about remorse; it’s an invitation into a transformed life. Just as Jesus told the woman, “Neither do I condemn you… go and sin no more,” we, too, are called to lay down our stones, stand with the vulnerable, and follow Christ in both humility and boldness.

John 6:1-15, 25-40

We all experience hunger—not just for food, but for meaning, love, and security. In John 6, after feeding the 5,000, Jesus challenges the crowd to seek something greater than physical bread. He declares, “I am the Bread of Life,” contrasting the temporary satisfaction of worldly things with the eternal fulfillment He offers.

Like the Israelites who received manna but remained unsatisfied, we often chase after things—entertainment, success, or approval—that leave us empty. Jesus calls us to trust in Him as the true source of life, grace, and purpose. Through Confirmation Sunday, we see this truth lived out as students commit to rejecting sin, embracing their God-given purpose, and trusting Christ’s grace to sustain them.

The question for all of us is this: What are we feeding our souls? Are we striving for things that perish, or are we being nourished by the Bread of Life?

John 6:16-21

In John’s Gospel, Jesus walking on water isn’t just a miracle—it’s a powerful revelation of His identity as the Great I AM. The disciples struggled against the storm, exhausted and afraid, yet Jesus approached them, walking over the waves, demonstrating His authority over the chaos. His words, “Do not be afraid,” remind us that He sees us in our struggles and is present even when we feel lost.

Fear is real, and striving against life’s storms is often necessary. But just as Jesus had control over the wind and waves, He has control over the challenges we face. He has stepped over empires, over Satan, and even over death itself. No matter what storm we are in, we can trust that Jesus will bring us safely to shore. Will we choose to believe in His power and walk in faith?

John 4:45-53 and 5:1-9

In John 5, Jesus asks a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years, “Do you want to be made well?” The man, so conditioned by his struggle, could only explain why healing seemed impossible. But Jesus, seeing his need, simply said, “Get up, take your mat, and walk.” This story challenges us to reflect on our own lives—are we waiting for healing on our own terms, or are we ready to receive the grace Jesus offers? Healing is not just about physical restoration; it’s about becoming whole in heart, mind, and spirit. Like the volunteers at a food pantry who show kindness and dignity to those in need, Jesus meets us where we are, offering a wholeness deeper than our circumstances. The question remains: Are we ready to accept His invitation to be made well?
