  • Terrestrische Universität: Klima(sch)wärme – Insekten, Daten, Wolken | Sybille Neumeyer, Michael John Gorman und Jessica Ware
    Critical Zones | Terrestrische Universität
    [22.07.2020]

  • Opening: Nobody's Listening. An Immersive Exhibition Promoting Justice for Iraq's Forgotten Genocide [EN]
    Nobody's Listening | Exhibition opening
    [01.10.2021]
The exhibition »Nobody's Listening« creates an immersive environment that generates greater international awareness of the events of the 2014 genocidal campaign and its profoundly devastating consequences for the Yazidi people, Christians as well as other minority religious groups and their cultural heritage in northern Iraq.
»Nobody's Listening« contains a Virtual Reality experience that commemorates the Yazidi genocide committed by ISIS in the summer of 2014 in northern Iraq. Seven years after the genocide, this is a forward-facing exhibition that focuses on what needs to happen next. It provides a platform for survivors and displaced people to tell their stories, display their expressions of painting, sculpture, and poetry – and make their voices heard about what actions are still needed.
The ceremonial opening of the exhibition will take place as a hybrid event, both streamed and live. Both political voices and survivors will speak and give an insight into the current situation.

  • Fiktives Gerichtsverfahren | Streitsache: Gibt es ein Recht auf medizinische Behandlung mit KI?
Plattform Lernende Systeme & Leibniz Universität Hannover | Vortrag
    [21.09.2021]

    Digiloglounge Digital | Online Diskussion
    [30.09.2021]

  • Terrestrial University: Observing-Participating-Commoning | Sam Skinner and Mirko Nikolić
    Critical Zones | Terrestrial University
    [09.09.2021]
What could artist-led observatory/observation be in the 21st century, which might begin to see through and beyond our intersecting planetary crises?
How do the activities of measurement, sense, and observation change when enacted through, and with, experimental modes of (collectivized) noticing, (community) building, (communal) imagination, and (collaborative) activism? How might ideas such as »participant observation« in anthropology, »observing systems« in cybernetics, and the »observer effect« in quantum physics, speak with radically different, but kindred discourses and processes, such as embodied perception and feminist »situated knowledges«?
This Terrestrial University session will sketch and prefigure alternative visions for observing and caring for what Sam Skinner and Mirko Nikolić call »material communities«. Based on their interdependent and collaborative research and praxis it will connect an artist-led horticulture project in Oxford with the river basins of Korenita and Jadar in the Balkans. The river sites are under threat of old and new large-scale extractivist operations. The above drawn-out questions and sites are unravelled and entangled from the positions of regenerative practices of horticulture and de-extractivist poetry.

  • Terrestrial University: Visualizing Forest Ecosystems | Yvonne Volkart, Rasa Smite, Arthur Gessler and Kaisa Rissanen
    Critical Zones | Terrestrial University
    [16.09.2021]
What are volatile particles? How can we measure and feel them? And why do we experience a fragrant forest as a consequence of climate heating?
In their 3D installation »Atmospheric Forest«, which is on show in the »Critical Zones« exhibition, artists Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits focus on the phenomenon of volatile emissions from trees and their visualization. In the course of their collaboration with the Swiss Federal Institute of Forest Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), they learned that under the regime of climate change, certain trees not only transform CO2 into oxygen, they also emit various gases into the atmosphere: forests breathe. Based on this artwork, this issue of »Terrestrial University« engages with in-depth scientific and artistic research on fragrant forests, taking the Pfyn forest in the Swiss Alps as a case study. This 10,000-year-old forest in the Valais, southwestern Switzerland, is unique: its state of crisis has been caused by the local aluminum industry and by drought exacerbated by climate change over the past 100 years. As one of the first long-term outdoor laboratories, the Pfyn forest has been closely monitored for more than 20 years.
The project partners talk about tools, methods, and the scale of fragrant forests affecting climate change together with the question of how art can translate the invisible and alarming interactions between the forest and atmospheric ecosystems into an experienceable environment confronting people with the imperative necessity of system change.
»Atmospheric Forest« is part of the »Ecodata–Ecomedia–Ecoaesthetics« research project (2017–2021), which is carried out by Yvonne Volkart (lead), Marcus Maeder, Rasa Smite, and Aline Veillat in collaboration with Arthur Gessler, Christian Ginzler, Andreas Rigling, the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL), and Kaisa Rissanen, University of Helsinki and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and hosted by the Academy of Art and Design (FHNW) Basel.

  • Epidemic Spreading
BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns | Online discussion
    [02.09.2021]
Vittoria Colizza, Dirk Brockmann, Marta C. González and Albert-László Barabási in conversation.
The exhibition »BarabásiLab. Hidden Patterns« investigates the patterns revealed through data and network science, among other things in the medical field. Kicking off the program accompanying the exhibition, Vittoria Colizza, Dirk Brockmann, Marta C. González and Albert-László Barabási will talk about the COVID-19 pandemic.
How, why and where does COVID-19 spread and how can we learn to live safely together in post-pandemic communities? Why did the response and the information environment around the world vary so much, and what impact is that having? In this panel four specialists will explain the pandemic's causes and effects and elaborate different containment strategies.
Dirk Brockmann, professor for theoretical biology at the Humboldt University of Berlin, hypothesized that the disease unfolded stronger in individualistic countries than it did in more collectivistic nations. As head of the department for epidemiology at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and as political consultant Brockmann will give practical insights into prevention strategies in Germany and abroad. In the fight against coronavirus, Vittoria Colizza and her team at France's National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM) are working in coordination with 25 other international academic partners to evaluate the cross-continental spread of the virus in Europe and Africa. Marta C. Gonzáles will reveal insights on collective human behavior with a focus on human mobility and the special demand in urban areas that might support measures in the future for more effective containment strategies in dealing with COVID-19. Albert Laszlo Barabási who made research projects on human mobility in New York will give insights on monitoring the spreading of a virus in urban areas.

  • Buchpräsentation: Das Janusgesicht Europas
Diskussion mit dem Autor Götz Großklaus und Jesús Muñoz Morcillo
    [08.09.2021]

Was erlebt man, und was lässt sich daraus folgern?
