In episode 64, you meet Dr. Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry (LL.B, LL.M (2), Ph.D International Law) who is the President of the World Maritime University based in Malmo, Sweden. She talks about her lengthy career within the United Nations system and especially the time she dedicated to the new Maritime Labour Convention, MLC, where 68 instruments now finally are merged into one single Convention.
Cleopatra is passionate about gender equity, something she talks a lot about and how it is important that everything now put into MLC must be implemented into the law of the countries that has ratified it and translate these rights and obligations into impact on the ground.
It was quite significant, when preparing for the new MLC, that the seafarers should enjoy the same fundamental rights at work as all other workers, human rights are universal and it is important that we value the work of those 1,2 mio seafarers who enables shipping to continue transporting 90 percent of our goods around the world.
Hopefully, you will come to the same realisation as I, this is a Power Woman and she is on a mission for the future!
Listen, comment, spread the word, EVERYONE needs to listen to the Shipping Podcast and the amazing guests that so generously give of their time!
