  • 2 Tools for Better Leadership Thinking
On episode #397, we discuss two tools which can improve our leadership thinking: thinking gray and thinking free.
Is the ability to make split-second decisions a highly prized skill for classroom leaders?
Yes, there are times where we may be required to make quick decisions in emergency situations or disasters. But in regards to the long-term development of our students, we actually need to be much slower and more deliberate about the decisions we make.
These two leadership tools of thinking gray and thinking free require us to slow down and…think. This means we might need to do less. But slowing down and doing less open up the door to becoming more. When we become more, we become a stronger leader who is better able to serve our students.

  • Gaining Wisdom from Our Storms
On episode #396, we discuss the 4th leadership lesson in our series on leadership lessons from Mr. Holland's Opus.
When we use our storms to fly higher and gain new wisdom, we take on a different perspective, we let our negative emotions pass, and then we can take action to get the positive results we want.
    It’s inside-out.
We can cheat to change people's perception of us, but we can't cheat excellence, and we can't cheat integrity. In other words, we may be able to plagiarize our external story and the way the world sees us, but we can’t plagiarize our internal story. The only way to Rise Above our adversity is to respond by writing our own story with the intention of making a positive impact on others.

  • The 80/20 Rule of Teaching for Impact
The 80/20 Rule says 80% of our input (what we do throughout the day) creates only 20% of our output (impact). But the flipside to this principle is 20% of what we do (input) creates 80% of our impact (output).
So how can we use the 80/20 rule to increase our impact as a classroom leader?
We can stop trying to do more…to jam more things into the 80% of our day. Instead, we need to focus on becoming more and building our leadership skills so we can take advantage of the 20% of our day to add more value to the lives of our students.

  • Showing Students How to Pursue Their Dreams
On episode #394, we discuss how when we execute the fundamental of success of Pursuing Our Dreams, we don't even have to tell students how to go after what sets their souls on fire. They can just follow our lead and they will know what to do.
Because in the pursuit of what we want, we often discover what we need.

  • Providing Our Students with a Compass
Our students don’t just need us to teach them…they need us to lead them. If we want to truly succeed as teachers, we need to embrace the fact we have a responsibility to provide our students with a compass through our leadership.
We need to stop thinking of ourselves as just teachers because that will only help us perform our first job. We must also fulfill our second, and most important, job to help them apply what they learn to living a successful life.

  • Do Less. Become More.
On episode #392, we analyze how we can use a period of insignificance to grow and increase the value we can give to the world.
We can't guarantee the external results we will produce, but we can do less of what doesn't matter and become more by increasing our capacity to add value to the lives of others.
This will allow us to focus on what truly matters...making an impact in the lives of our students.
