Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
I came across a news report saying that Akita Prefectural University has developed an innovative robot designed to scare off bears.
The robot’s name is “Hacchan,” and it is shaped like a four-legged Akita dog.
It is equipped with an infrared sensor and an AI camera.
When it detects a bear, it is designed to growl to scare it off.
I wonder what kind of situation this robot would work best in.
I don’t think it is intended to fight bears directly, because there is a huge difference in size and strength between the robot and a bear.
Instead, if the aim is to drive bears away by scaring them, or to patrol the village unmanned to spot bears, it would be a good choice.
The news report said that the research team is planning to conduct a field test of its ability to detect bears at the end of this year.
I’m curious about how this test will be conducted.
In particular, will only one robot be deployed in the test?
If the main goal is to patrol the village, it would be more effective to deploy multiple robots, each covering a different area.
But if the goal is also to drive bears back into the mountains, wouldn’t it be better to send many Hacchans to one area and have them move together as a pack?
Either way, I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of this test.
That’s it see you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Yesterday was sports day at my daughter’s elementary school.
My wife and I went to watch our daughter.
Looking at the program, we noticed that there were no events like group gymnastics or mock cavalry battles, known as “kumitaiso” or “kibasen” in Japanese.
I remember that when I was a child, these events were definitely the highlights of sports day.
But apparently, there’s a declining trend in schools featuring these events.
This trend seems to be mainly because of safety concerns.
These events are not necessarily banned, but many schools have decided they cannot adequately guarantee the students’ safety.
Knowing that, I can’t argue with it at all.
Actually, when I was in elementary school, I broke a bone myself while practicing group gymnastics.
But although my head understands it, my heart feels differently.
I can’t help feeling a sense of sadness that these iconic events are no longer part of sports day.
Instead, what should I get excited about at sports day as a parent?
Maybe it’s a creative dance or a heated race between the red and white teams.
Honestly, it feels like something is missing, but I have to accept it for the sake of the children’s safety.
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Yesterday, while I was at work, smartphones all around me suddenly started blaring all at once.
It was an emergency earthquake alert(緊急地震速報).
I was nervous and braced myself in case the quake really hit.
But shortly afterward, it turned out to be a false alarm, and the warning was canceled within minutes.
Later, I heard that the quake’s magnitude had been estimated at 9.9 and that this had caused a lot of concern and confusion.
A magnitude 9.9 earthquake would be unprecedented, because the largest earthquake ever recorded had a magnitude of 9.5.
The cause of the false alarm is still under investigation, but some people say that the formula used to calculate the magnitude may not have been adequate.
Other factors may also be involved, and they are being investigated as well.
At a press conference, Chief Cabinet Secretary(官房長官) Kihara addressed the false alarm, saying the government took the great concern and inconvenience it had caused very seriously,
but personally, I think such false alarms are unavoidable.
Emergency alerts are time-critical by nature, so it makes sense that they are issued automatically, with no time for human verification.
Moreover, every warning system involves a trade-off between missing a real threat and raising a false alarm, and earthquake alerts are no exception.
So occasional false alarms like this are the price we pay for our safety.
That’s it. See you next time.

    Thinking FOX

Just a one minute English speech by thinking Fox.
When I was browsing a website for children’s English books, I stumbled upon(出くわす) a book I used to read as a kid.
The title is “Bears in the Night.”
It has been a bestseller for decades, so some of you might be familiar with it.
Feeling nostalgic, I ended up buying it online.
It’s a small, compact book, and the storyline is so simple that children can read it easily.
Seven little bears wake up in the night, sneak out of bed(ベッドからこっそり抜け出す), and go on an adventure outside.
Then, on the hill, they’re startled by a big owl’s loud hoot(ふくろうの鳴き声), rush home, and jump back into bed.
What makes it so good is that it uses prepositions(前置詞) of place over and over—like “under the bridge,” “between the rocks,” and “up the hill”—helping children pick them up naturally.
Another great thing is that the whole story uses only 24 different words.
The illustrations have a very old-fashioned touch, and the little bears’ faces look so mischievous(いたずらっぽい).
It gently stirs children’s sense of adventure.
If you have little kids and want them to get familiar with English books, I highly recommend this one as a first step.
That’s it. See you next time

    タイトルは『Bears in the Night』です。

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Have you heard about the mystery of a plane that vanished some 90 years ago?
It happened in 1937. Amelia Earhart, a female pilot, attempted to become the first woman to fly around the world.
But on their way to Howland Island in the Pacific, she and her navigator suddenly disappeared.
It remains one of the greatest mysteries in aviation history.
Later, several artifacts, such as glass bottles and a makeup compact, were found on Nikumaroro Island, not far from their route.
So, some people believe that they may have crash-landed on Nikumaroro Island, but what exactly happened to them remains unclear.
A few years ago, satellite imagery revealed an object that looks like debris from their plane in the lagoon of Nikumaroro Island.
If confirmed, it could provide conclusive proof that they crash-landed there.
This week, a team of researchers has just launched an expedition to the island.
So, we need to wait for the results.
By the way, this mystery reminds me of the novel *Robinson Crusoe*.
I recently saw my daughter reading it.
In the story, Robinson Crusoe, is shipwrecked on a deserted island and finally returns home after 28 years.
However, I guess Earhart and her navigator couldn’t return home and probably died on the island.
The real world is very harsh. I feel sorry for them.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one minute English speech by thinking Fox.
There was some news from the U.S.
An ultramarathon in Moab, Utah, was halted partway through due to severe weather brought by Tropical Storm Rachel.
Some runners even had to be evacuated from the course during the race.
Ultramarathon is an umbrella term for races longer than 42.195 km, the full-marathon distance.
In Japan, the most common distance seems to be 100 km.
However, the runners in this Moab race take on 389 km, from Friday to Tuesday, running through the desert, canyons, slickrock formations, and two mountain ranges.
    It’s an incredibly hard race.
Even under normal circumstances, it would be extremely tough, so with severe weather on top of that, I think it would be close to mission impossible.
By the way, I can’t wrap my head around why ultrarunners choose to take on these races.
If I were one of the runners standing at the starting line, I'd be in complete despair, knowing that there were days of running ahead of me.
So I’m really curious about what goes through the minds of ultrarunners and what keeps them going.
Do they simply enjoy the running itself, the beautiful scenery along the way, or the time spent chatting with fellow runners?
If any of you have any insight, please share in the comments.
That’s it. See you next time.
    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by thinking FOX.
Today, I’d like to talk about kids’ parody songs.
Recently, my son and daughter have been bringing home parody songs from kindergarten and elementary school.
The originals are well-known children’s songs, such as “The Bear in the Woods” or *My Neighbor Totoro*, but the parody versions are really rude and full of toilet humor.
I think they pick up these parody songs from their friends.
What embarrasses me most is that they sing these songs even louder and more proudly when we’re out in public together.
I really want them to stop it.
I don’t see what’s so amusing about these songs at all.
But they seem to find these songs the funniest thing in the world, even though they simply swap some of the lyrics for words you can’t say on TV, without a trace of wit.
Of course, I know this is just temporary.
Looking back on my own childhood, I think I used to have fun singing songs like that, too.
So I guess I’ll just have to wait until they get bored with it.
Until then, I keep telling myself, “Kids will be kids. They’ll grow out of it eventually.”
That said, I’d appreciate it if they didn’t sing these songs in front of their grandparents.
That’s it. see you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
Following the recent devastating earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture, which led to a decline in tourism, a travel discount program has been launched.
It’s called the “Kyushu Recovery Support Discount(九州復興支援割).”
Under this program, a discount of up to 60% is applied to accommodation and travel costs in Kyushu.
As part of this campaign, several fascinating highlights of Kumamoto Prefecture are featured in a Japan Times article.
(Correction: “The Japan Times” should read “The Japan News.”)
Among them are dolphin watching, tasting Akaushi beef, and rafting down the Kuma River.
They all sound appealing. Which one would you prefer?
Personally, I’d definitely go for the Akaushi beef.
When I looked it up, it turned out Akaushi beef is a brand of Wagyu raised in the area around Mount Aso, known for its rich flavor.
Apparantly, its deep umami comes not from marbled fat(霜降り) but from the lean meat(赤み) itself.
The most popular way to enjoy it seems to be as a rice bowl(どんぶり). The photos I saw online looked really tempting.
You can also switch up the flavor by adding a special miso sauce or mixing in a soft-boiled egg.
    What an appetizing combination!
If you’re planning a trip this autumn and haven’t decided where to go yet, why not visit Kumamoto?
That’s it. See you next time.

    (訂正:「The Japan Times」は「The Japan News」の誤りです。)

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
I came across a news report that Starbucks is facing a lawsuit over the labeling of some of its drinks.
The drinks in question were those labeled “sugar-free.”
Despite the label, they actually contained sugar in the form of lactose from milk.
Starbucks rejects the claim, arguing that the only sugar in these drinks comes naturally from the milk, and none is added through syrups or other add-ons, so the label is accurate.
Even so, the Venti size of some of these drinks contains about 13 to 21 grams of sugar, so it’s understandable why the plaintiffs claim the “sugar-free” label is misleading.
I like Starbucks, so I hope this lawsuit will be resolved peacefully.
By the way, I feel like a lot of Starbucks drinks are pretty sweet to begin with.
So, my go-to order is hot or iced drip coffee.
It’s also a great deal thanks to the “One More Coffee” service, which lets you get a second cup of drip coffee at a discount on the same day.
And when I want something creamy, I order a cappuccino.
I think there used to be a lime-based drink called Cool Lime in the summer season, but I haven’t seen it in a long time, and I miss it.
If you have a favorite Starbucks drink as well, please share it in the comments.

Just a one-minute English speech by thinking FOX.
How many dog owners actually sleep in the same bed as their dogs?
Some people say they love sleeping with their dogs.
However, some people also say that the dogs can actually disturb their sleep by barking at night or stealing the blanket, which makes their sleep fragmented.
I’ve never owned a dog or shared a bed with one, so I wonder if that’s actually true.
I came across a study that sheds light on this issue.
This study was conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto and published in the scientific journal PLOS One.
In this study, both the owners and their dogs were equipped with sensors to measure their sleep quality and to examine the relationship between their sleep patterns.
As a result, the owners’ sleep quality was not significantly different even when they shared a bed with their dogs.
Interestingly, the owners and their dogs became active at about the same time during sleep, and the owners tended to move before their dogs.
According to a news report about this study, one of the researchers said that it was the owners who disturbed their dogs’ sleep, not the other way around.
Oh my gosh! I can’t believe it!
If the dog-loving shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi were alive today, all those owners might be thrown in prison.
Dear dogs, I apologize on behalf of all humankind for disturbing your peaceful sleep.
That’s it. See you next time.
