Just a one minute English speech and question by thinking Fox.
Argentine football legend Lionel Messi has retired from the national team.
He played 208 games and scored 126 goals for Argentina over 21 years.
A memorable celebration was held after the match against Benin, and the capacity crowd and his teammates applauded him.
Not only the fans in the stadium but the whole nation was sad to see his era come to an end and celebrated his legacy.
    Now, here's my question.
What do you think was the most memorable tribute at the farewell ceremony?
There are three options. Choose the one you think is correct.
Number one, 50 Argentine Air Force aircraft flew in formation across the night sky.
Number two, 100 projectors lit up the pitch with projection mapping of memorable moments from Messi's career.
Number three, 500 drones took to the sky, forming images of Messi in various iconic poses.
    The answer is number three.
Five hundred drones filled the sky, forming images of Lionel Messi playing football and lifting the World Cup trophy.
It was a very emotional and heartwarming celebration.
I wonder who will be the next Messi.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by thinking, Fox.
Kei Nishikori, a Japanese tennis legend, retired last week.
He had a remarkably long career; I first heard of him 20 years ago.
It was while I was watching the 2006 French Open final between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
At the time, I heard that before the final, Nadal had chosen as his hitting partner a Japanese junior player named Nishikori.
I also heard that he won the junior doubles title at that French Open.
I remember being surprised that there was such a promising young player in Japan.
His name soon became well known and in 2008 he won the Delray Beach Open by defeating James Blake.
In 2014, he beat Djokovic in the semifinal to reach the U.S. Open final, and although he lost to Marin Cilic, it was one of the greatest achievements of his career.
He also struggled with injuries for a long time, but his play continued to thrill many Japanese fans.
His playing style was characterized by a strong backhand and quickness on the court.
He had excellent footwork and hit the ball on the rise, which left his opponents little time to react.
I really enjoyed watching him play, especially his baseline rallies.
I'd like to say to him, "Thank you for your years of dedication to Japanese tennis and for inspiring so many Japanese players."
That’s it. See you next time .

    Thinking FOX

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking FOX.
In the US, measles outbreaks have become a serious public health concern.
To date, the total number of measles cases in the US has surpassed 3,800, the highest since 1991.
Of all the states, Pennsylvania has been hit the hardest, with more than 1,000 cases reported to date.
ABC News reports underscore that the vast majority of cases in this outbreak occurred in unvaccinated individuals.
Among the five patients who have died of measles, two were unvaccinated adults, two were infants too young to be vaccinated, and one was an unvaccinated person of unknown age.
Furthermore, fewer than one percent of measles cases in Pennsylvania have occurred in vaccinated people.
News reports have raised concerns that measles vaccination coverage among kindergartners has declined from 95.2% in the 2019–2020 school year to 92.4% in the 2025–2026 school year.
In Japan, measles cases have also been increasing, especially this year.
According to the Japan Institute for Health Security, 576 measles cases have been reported so far this year, the highest number since 2019.
Measles is a serious concern here in Japan as well.
That’s it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by ThinkingFox.
Yesterday, it was announced that three scientists from the US and Germany would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Their accomplishment was in the field of optogenetics, which may sound unfamiliar to many people.
The term is a blend of "optics" and "genetics."
Optogenetics uses proteins, such as channelrhodopsin, that respond to a specific wavelength of light.
These proteins are introduced only into the targeted cells through genetic engineering.
When exposed to that light, they switch the cell's activity on or off.
What makes this technology remarkable is that we can control cells with precise timing and precise location.
If we use a conventional method, such as administering drugs, it takes time for the effect to appear.
And if we use electrical stimulation, many cells around the target cells are also activated because the stimulation spreads to the surrounding area.
But this technology can overcome these limitations because it can switch only the targeted cells on or off within milliseconds.
    I think it's a truly unique approach.
I wonder, could it be that a werewolf's transformation under the full moon is triggered in the same way?
In the real world, this technology is expected to be applied in many areas, including research into depression and Parkinson's disease.
I hope it continues to advance.
    That's it.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
As my son plays at a local soccer club every week, I bought him a guidebook on junior soccer.
Looking through it, I was surprised — it was so advanced, even though it was a book for elementary school kids.
The book consists of four parts: dribbling, kicking, one-on-ones, and match play.
Throughout all four parts, the book emphasizes the importance of thinking tactically while playing.
What struck me most were two things: watching the opponent closely and making decisions based on the situation.
So when facing an opponent, players need to watch him closely — especially which foot he has his weight on.
To do that, players always need to keep their head up while they're on the ball.
The book also highlights that players should always have a safe option — that is, a play with no risk of losing the ball to the opponent.
On top of that, they should have two or three riskier options, and then decide which one to go for based on the risks involved.
This might be common knowledge for adult players, but I had no idea that today's kids also bring these ideas into their play.
When I was a kid, I also played for a local soccer club.
But back then, all I could think about was just pulling off the Raiju Shot from *Captain Tsubasa*. Nothing like that ever crossed my mind.
If I could go back to my childhood, I'd love to practice soccer once more, properly learning things like this.
That's it. See you next time.

    Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
I came across a news report saying that a female technician in Russia had died of plague.
Apparently, the Russian technician had accidentally broken a test tube containing plague bacteria, which led to her infection.
Plague is an infectious disease called "pesuto" in Japanese, and it is generally regarded as a thing of the past.
Plague is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, and it has caused several pandemics throughout history.
In particular, it caused a devastating pandemic in the Middle Ages, when it was feared as the Black Death.
About a third of Europe's population is said to have died of it.
Centuries later, in 1894, Shibasaburo Kitazato and Alexandre Yersin independently identified the bacterium responsible for the disease.
Plague has not been completely eradicated; it remains endemic in several countries, most notably Madagascar and DR Congo.
In Japan, no cases have been reported since 1927.
Plague has three main forms: bubonic, pneumonic, and septicaemic plague.
They mainly affect the lymph nodes, the lungs, and the bloodstream, respectively.
Pneumonic plague is much more dangerous than bubonic plague.
It can develop secondary to bubonic plague, and it can also spread from person to person through respiratory droplets.
Reportedly, the Russian technician also had pneumonic plague, so I'm concerned about the risk to public health.
However, it was also reported that the people who were exposed to her are under medical observation.
Furthermore, WHO guidelines make a conditional recommendation for post-exposure antibiotic prophylaxis.
Since the incubation period of pneumonic plague is short, I think we will soon know whether this case will have any serious consequences.
That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
How do you usually sleep — on your back, side, or stomach?
I never knew this, but apparently people who sleep on their backs are called "back sleepers," and those who sleep on their stomachs are called "stomach sleepers."
I've been a stomach sleeper since childhood.
That's because I somehow feel more secure when my stomach is facing down.
Similarly, wild animals rarely expose their bellies when they sleep.
This is because the belly holds many vital organs, so animals instinctively see it as an area to defend.
Some people say that sleeping on your stomach isn't good for your health.
In this position, you have to turn your neck to one side, which can compress the nerves in your neck.
On top of that, the muscles in your lower back stay strained for hours, which can lead to lower back pain.
On the other hand, there is a condition where sleeping on your back isn't recommended either.
That's obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder in which the upper airway collapses during sleep, leading to snoring and low oxygen levels at night.
At the clinic, I always advise patients with this disorder to avoid sleeping on their backs.
That said, according to an article I read, what matters is whether you can change positions during sleep, rather than which position you fall asleep in.
That's it. See you next time.

    Thinking Fox

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
Have you ever tried ostrich meat?
You know the ostrich, called "dacho" in Japanese—the world's largest bird that can't fly but runs faster than any other bird.
I'm talking about the ostrich today because I read a news story saying that ostrich meat can be a good alternative to beef.
According to the news, an ostrich farm in the U.S. supplies the meat to people who cannot eat beef.
Ostrich meat is in demand among some people, particularly those with a condition called alpha-gal syndrome, in which a tick bite triggers an allergy to mammalian meat such as beef.
The farmer wanted to provide them with the meat so that they could enjoy a taste similar to beef.
After reading it, I became really curious about what ostrich meat tastes like.
Does it really taste like beef?
When I looked it up online, I found many dishes using ostrich meat, such as ostrich burgers, ostrich shabu-shabu, and ostrich carpaccio.
Apparently, ostrich meat is high in protein and low in calories, making it nutritious and popular among health-conscious people.
The only concern is that it seems a little expensive because it's not widely available.
If any of you have ever tried ostrich meat, please share with me what you thought of it.
That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
The other night, completely exhausted after a long day at work, I was walking home from the station.
I stopped at a red light at an intersection.
That's when something strange caught my eye: an object glowing mysteriously by the side of the dark road.
"What's that? Has that always been there?"
Feeling suspicious, I walked up to it and found that it was a vending machine.
But instead of drinks, it was selling bottles of salad dressing.
Salad dressing? From a vending machine?
I had never seen such a strange vending machine before.
I grew more and more curious and wanted to try one.
There were two kinds of bottles: one with a red label and one with a purple label.
So I went with the red one.
When I got home, I tried it on some leftover salad in the refrigerator.
As I poured it over the salad, out came a cloudy, reddish-brown liquid.
The moment I put it in my mouth, I felt a gentle flavor spread across my tongue.
It was smooth, with the natural taste of onions and carrots, leaving a light, clean finish with no aftertaste.
This is so good, I thought.
When I looked it up online, I found that it was a dressing from Il Chianti, a popular Italian restaurant.
In fact, it's the restaurant's signature dressing.
I couldn't believe that such a delicious dressing was quietly being sold in a vending machine.
I thought I'd like to try the other bottle, the purple one, as well.
With this dressing, even my children who don't like vegetables might enjoy eating salad.
Apparently, you can also get it online. Why not give it a try?
That's it. See you next time.

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.
When it comes to famous coffee chains, the first one for most people is probably Starbucks.
We see the Starbucks logo all over the city, and we know at a glance that it's a Starbucks.
But can you actually remember the details of the design?
It's a long-haired woman on a green background, and she looks like a mermaid because she is holding her two tails on both sides.
Do you know what this logo is based on and why Starbucks chose it as its symbol?
Apparently, it's a siren — known as "Seiren" in Japanese — a creature from Greek myth who sang enchanting songs at sea to attract sailors.
Starbucks chose it as its symbol because they wanted their coffee to be as tempting as the siren's song.
What a witty idea it is!
By the way, as everyone knows, the sirens in Greek myth had a dark side.
Sailors would become so absorbed in the song that they stopped watching where they were going.
As a result, their ships would crash into the rocks before they knew it.
It can be dangerous to get too absorbed in a song.
Similarly, coffee itself tastes good and can help you relax, but excessive intake can lead to health problems like arrhythmia or an upset stomach.
So in that sense, I think this logo is fitting in many ways.
That's it. See you next time.

    Thinking Fox
