Our guest today, Kalea Renee, a native of Humboldt County, takes us on a lively journey through her memories and experiences of this picturesque location, from birthday parties at Moonstone Beach to swimming in the Pacific Ocean. We delve into the unique beauty of Humboldt and how these experiences have shaped her.

We also peel back the layers of the local cannabis industry, discussing everything from the intricacies of cultivation to the perils posed by cartels.
In the final stretch of our conversation, we turn our attention to the future of Humboldt County. Kalea discusses her move to Medford post-graduation, what she's taken from her Humboldt experience, and the transformations she's observed in the county since leaving. We exchange our local favorites – from eateries to craft beers and underline the power of laughter and connection. We wrap up this heartfelt episode, leaving you with a mixtape of our favorite tunes. Ever wondered about the delicate line between peacekeeping and peacemaking? As a declared Enneagram Peacemaker, I open up about my own struggles and revelations on this very topic. I'm not just here to keep the peace, but to actively create it, to write new narratives and build spaces of ease and belonging. This is my journey of self-discovery, a journey that is far from over, and you're invited to join me on this path.
The Catalyst Church wasn't built in a day, and neither was my spiritual journey. Discover how the church evolved from humble beginnings to its current status, and how I went from a staff member at Rock Harbor in Costa Mesa to a pastor. The church isn't just a physical structure, it's a space filled with tensions, discussions, and sometimes, controversies. One such core debate is on women's roles in the church, and it's time we address it head-on.
Dive into the deep end with me as we navigate the complexities of life, loss, and the Christian practices of Lent and Advent. It's not just about darkness and joy, but the tension that exists between them. We also confront the challenging topics of social media addiction, the savior complex, competition, and scarcity and their impact on us. But it's not all heavy, as we lighten the mood sharing our favorite local spots in Humboldt County for a good drink and a bite. And then, we end on a note of hope - exploring the concept of being a beloved child of God, and why it’s the best deal in the universe.

Join me as we embark on a remarkable journey with our guest, Michael Davis Hughes. Hughes recounts his rip-roaring adventures from his university days in South Wales to a cross-country Greyhound bus journey across the United States, ultimately landing in Humboldt County. From finding love in Lake County to his teaching pursuits in Fortuna, there's a lot to unpack as he illustrates why teaching seventh grade can be both the toughest and most rewarding experience.
We also stride into my world of ultra-endurance racing, and the lessons I’ve learned from it. I share my rigorous experiences of participating in the Race Across America twice, a backbreaking 3,060-mile non-stop race across 12 states. From pedaling through a rain-soaked rainforest in a depleted state to combating desert heat, it's a tale of endurance, teamwork, and sheer determination. What's more, it's not just about the race, but also about the cause that drives me - raising money for Hope Cam, a charity that enables children undergoing cancer treatment to stay connected with their classmates.
And then we shift gears to examine Humboldt County's dedication to investing in education and supporting students. We touch upon the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students' social and emotional needs, the county's efforts to meet these needs through Community Schools, and the legacy of educators like Kim Spalli in Humboldt County. We also underscore the importance of inclusive education, compassionate support for students on the autism spectrum, and the dedicated staff at Glenn Paul School. Through this episode, we hope to inspire you with tales of adventure, perseverance, and the transformative power of education.
