STORY 1: Georgia Senate Passes Sports Betting Bill

The Georgia Senate has passed legislation (Senate Bill 386) to legalize sports betting in the state, but only after approving a significant change requiring a statewide referendum on the measure. The bill, passed by a vote of 35-15, would have the Georgia Lottery Corp. oversee sports betting, issuing licenses to 16 online sports betting providers. Notably, the bill calls for a statewide referendum, making the measure contingent on a constitutional amendment, similar to the process used for the Georgia Lottery. The referendum would be part of the May 21 general election primary ballot if the House approves the bill.

STORY 2: New Driving Tour Explores Cherokee County’s Black History

History Cherokee has introduced a new Black History Driving Tour featuring 19 sites in Canton and Woodstock, aiming to raise awareness about the significance of preserving and celebrating Black history in Cherokee County, Georgia. Developed by History Cherokee's Black History Committee, the tour encourages participants to reflect on the challenges faced by the Black community, celebrate their triumphs, and recognize ongoing contributions. The driving tour is available online, with print brochures expected later this month at select locations. History Cherokee received a $2,499 state grant from Georgia Humanities for the project, and a related lecture event is scheduled for February 20.

STORY 3: Cherokee County School Board Names Finalist for Superintendent

The Cherokee County school board voted 4-3 to name Mary Elizabeth Davis as the sole finalist for the superintendent position. The board will vote on confirming her appointment on February 15. Davis is currently the superintendent for Henry County Schools and has served in various leadership roles in education, including chief academic officer in Cobb County School District and assistant superintendent of teaching and learning in Gwinnett County Public Schools. The decision faced opposition from some board members who believe the next superintendent should have firsthand knowledge of the unique district and community. The current superintendent, Brian Hightower, is retiring at the end of the school year.

STORY 4: Fulton Prosecutor Avoids Testifying in Divorce Case Due to Temporary Agreement

The divorce hearing involving Fulton County special prosecutor Nathan Wade, accused of an improper affair with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, was canceled after Wade reached a temporary settlement with his estranged wife, Joycelyn Wade. The settlement came after Joycelyn Wade's attorneys sought to depose Willis in the divorce proceeding. The temporary agreement, dealing with issues like fee payments and use of assets, will not affect future hearings on Wade and Willis’ relationship. Both are now targets of subpoenas by an attorney representing one of the defendants in the criminal racketeering case against former President Donald Trump and his allies.

STORY 5: CCSD Students Advance to State Tech Fair

Cherokee County School District (CCSD) students excelled at the Student Technology Competition, with 39 students securing first place at the regional level and advancing to the state contest in Georgia. The Georgia Student Technology Competition program includes 16 project categories for students in grades 3-12. The regional winners will compete in the statewide competition in March in Henry County. The competition encompasses diverse areas such as animation, audio production, game design, robotics, video production, and more. • 2024 Super Bowl Ticket Prices Will Leave You Stunned

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Drake Realty. Today is Wednesday, January 31st, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

2024 Super Bowl ticket prices will blow your mind

Super Bowl LVIII is just weeks away, and ticket prices have reached unprecedented levels. The lowest resale ticket price, or "get-in" price, is a staggering $9,850, according to SeatGeek. The average ticket price has soared to over $12,000, a 36% increase from last year.

TickPick also reports record-breaking prices, with a get-in price of $8,188 and an average of $9,815. The hike in prices isn't due to the halftime show, but rather the game's location. For the first time, Las Vegas, a favorite American travel spot, is hosting the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.

Previous venues saw lower average prices: $8,907 in Glendale, Arizona, and $10,322 in Los Angeles in 2022. The high stakes add to the excitement: a win for the Chiefs would cement Patrick Mahomes' legacy, while the 49ers aim for their first Super Bowl win since 1995.

STORY 1: Forget Walmart, Amazon has a surprising huge new rival

Amazon's massive infrastructure, including its network of warehouses and delivery fleet, creates a significant barrier for potential rivals. Walmart has come close to matching this advantage. Other players like Shopify have struggled to compete due to the immense costs involved in building a comparable infrastructure. FedEx, having decided to stop doing business with Amazon in 2019, has built a substantial delivery network nationally. Now, FedEx plans to offer its retailer customers access to an e-commerce platform named "fdx," leveraging its delivery capabilities and technology from the acquisition of ShopRunner in 2020. This move aims to revolutionize supply chain management and enhance FedEx's relationships with merchants.

STORY 2: CCSD Students Selected for Regional Honor Band

Sixty-five middle school band members from the Cherokee County School District (CCSD) have been selected for the Georgia Music Educators Association District 9 Honor Band. These students, chosen through December auditions, will participate in a clinic and performance in Blue Ridge on February 2-3. CCSD Superintendent Brian Hightower commended the achievement, emphasizing the importance of performing arts in middle schools and expressing gratitude to dedicated band teachers for providing exceptional instruction and opportunities. The selected students represent various middle schools, each led by their respective band directors.

STORY 3: COED President Misti Martin Announces 'Work in Cherokee' Campaign

The Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED) is launching the Work in Cherokee campaign to boost the county's workforce, offering a $1,500 signing bonus to employees who relocate their jobs to Cherokee County after a 120-day employment period. Funded by American Rescue Plan Act relief funds, the campaign aims to attract and retain talent, foster innovative business investment, and enhance infrastructure. COED also plans a workforce analysis and website careers page update. The initiative aligns with Cherokee By Choice 2.0 goals. COED has previously assisted over $1 billion in investments and 8,000 job creations.

On Wednesday evening, a carjacking near KSU's campus prompted a nearly two-hour lockdown. Three men carjacked a 2023 Cadillac CT4, fleeing toward the KSU campus. The carjacked vehicle was located by the Cobb Police's Real Time Crime Center, leading KSU Police to issue a secure-in-place alert due to reports of an armed intruder on campus. Marquise Adams, 17, was apprehended with the stolen vehicle's keys after a foot chase, but two suspects remained at large. No shots were fired on campus, and there were no reported injuries. The secure-in-place alert was lifted at 8:18 p.m. as police continue to investigate. Contact the Cobb County Police Department with information at 770-499-4111.

STORY 6: Harry Johnston Shares 'State of Cherokee'

At the Council for Quality Growth’s 2024 State of Cherokee County event, Cherokee County Commission Chair Harry Johnston outlined plans for the county's future growth. Focusing on maintaining low taxes and high-quality services, Johnston emphasized the need to keep up with road work, prevent overwhelming growth, and address attainable housing challenges. He expressed the goal of maintaining expense growth below population growth and inflation. Johnston acknowledged the rising costs of public safety and the need for more funding for alternatives to incarceration. Slowing population growth to around 0.75% over 30 years and increasing road funding were highlighted as challenges and goals.

STORY 7: Cherokee County Student Named Candidate for U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

Creekview High School senior Kinley Sikes has been selected as a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, an elite national honor. • Ridley Introduces Bill to Expand Cherokee's Senior School Tax Homestead Exemption

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Drake Realty. Today is Friday, January 26th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Ridley Introduces Bill to Expand Cherokee's Senior School Tax Homestead Exemption

In a recent legislative move, State Rep. Jordan Ridley, R-Woodstock, introduced House Bill 1025, aimed at broadening the senior school property tax exemption in Cherokee County.

The bill stipulates that seniors aged 62 and above, who have resided in the county for a minimum of five years and earn an annual income not exceeding $16,000, would be exempt from all Cherokee County School District ad valorem taxes for educational purposes. This exemption applies to the full value of their homestead.

If the bill receives approval and is signed into law, it would generate a local ballot referendum. Cherokee County voters would then decide on the proposed expansion of the senior school tax break.

State Rep. Ridley expressed his support for the bill, stating, "Our senior citizens deserve a break from ad valorem taxes. With record-high inflation increasing the financial burden on residents across the state, it's my hope that this legislation will bring vital relief to our taxpayers."

Currently, seniors aged 62 and above in Cherokee County are eligible for a school property tax exemption, but this is capped at a certain amount of their homestead's value. This cap is adjusted annually based on the Social Security Index.

In 2023, properties in Cherokee County witnessed an average increase of 15.01% in their assessments compared to the previous year. Ridley's bill aims to alleviate some of the financial pressure caused by these increases.

  • Cherokee Residents Show Support for Homestead Option Sales Tax at Town Halls

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday, January 25th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cherokee Residents Show Support for Homestead Option Sales Tax at Town Halls

Cherokee County residents have shown majority support for the Homestead Option Sales Tax (HOST) at town hall meetings. The county is considering three sales tax options: Local Option Sales Tax (LOST), HOST, and Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (T-SPLOST). The final decision will require voter approval.

Among 123 polled residents, 89 favored HOST. Commissioner Steve West noted the need to shift the tax burden away from seniors. He suggested that rental properties, which don't pay property tax, could contribute more through a sales tax.

The current total sales tax in Cherokee County is 6%. A new 1% sales tax could generate $63.3 million annually. Commissioners favor either HOST or T-SPLOST. HOST mandates 80% of proceeds be used to roll back property taxes on homesteaded properties.

The implementation of these taxes requires a referendum and legislative delegation approval. Further discussions will occur at the upcoming planning retreat.

  • Georgia Senate Committee Passes Antisemitism Bill

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Wednesday, January 24th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Georgia Senate Committee Passes Antisemitism Bill

In a significant development, the Georgia state Senate committee has approved a revised version of legislation that defines antisemitism and includes it in the state's hate crimes law. This approval comes after an emotionally charged hearing featuring arguments both for and against the measure.

House Bill 30, which passed the Georgia House of Representatives last year but did not pass in the Senate, aims to incorporate the definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance into state law. The bill also provides additional penalties for crimes committed against Jewish victims.

The previous version of the bill was criticized for its ambiguity, leading to Senate President Pro Tempore John Kennedy, R-Macon, to champion this new, clearer version. “This substitute clearly sets out the government’s duties,” he said. “Agencies can rely on the definition to determine if antisemitism is present.”

Rep. John Carson, R-northeast Cobb, the House bill’s chief sponsor, underscored the urgent need for this legislation due to a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Georgia.

The hearing prior to the vote saw speakers both supporting and opposing the bill, with Jewish Georgians on both sides. Critics expressed concerns that the legislation could be used to silence critics of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. However, supporters argued that the bill is necessary to address the increasing antisemitic violence in Georgia.

House Bill 30 will now proceed to the Senate Rules Committee, where it will be scheduled for a full Senate vote.
