  • American Airlines makes surprising change affecting passengers

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Wednesday, January 10th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

American Airlines makes surprising change affecting passengers

American Airlines has announced surprising changes that will impact passengers in 2024. The airline is set to revamp its AAdvantage loyalty program, offering more benefits to its members and enhancing the overall travel experience.

The new developments, set to begin on March 1, 2024, come as a response to a competitive scramble among airlines to attract loyal customers following a controversial decision by Delta Air Lines to scale back passenger access to its SkyMiles airport lounges in late 2023.

American Airlines is also introducing new ways for travelers to use AAdvantage miles. Once members reach AAdvantage Platinum Pro status, they can redeem miles for Flagship First Dining passes and upgrades with select airline partners.

Later in 2024, the airline will offer more exclusive benefits such as free same-day standby for earlier domestic flights, extended trip credit, Admirals Club One-Day Passes, Flagship Lounge Single Visit Passes, and the ability to put flights on hold free of charge for up to 24 hours.

Furthermore, American Airlines will be changing its cancellation policy. Starting later this month, AAdvantage members will have the ability to cancel non-refundable Basic Economy tickets and receive a partial trip credit for a fee.

STORY 1: 21-Year-Old Charged in Fatal Cherokee County Crash

William Bedora, a Woodstock man, faces charges of vehicular homicide and DUI following a November crash. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office arrested Bedora on December 22, charging him with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, reckless driving, and weaving over the roadway. The arrest warrant states that Bedora, driving over 116 mph under the influence, crashed into a mailbox and fence, resulting in the death of his passenger, Robert Zander Hattersley, 21. Bedora, released on a $24,000 bond, is prohibited from driving and contacting Hattersley’s family under bond conditions.

STORY 2: Braves Sign Newly Acquired Sale to Two-Year Extension

The Atlanta Braves signed left-hander Chris Sale to a two-year, $38 million contract extension, restructuring his previous deal with the Boston Red Sox. The new contract covers the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with a club option for 2026 at $18 million. Sale, a seven-time All-Star, was acquired from Boston in exchange for prospect Vaughn Grissom. The 34-year-old waived his no-trade clause to join the Braves. Sale has faced injury challenges in recent years, including Tommy John surgery and stress fractures, limiting his appearances. Despite this, he remains a highly regarded pitcher with a strong track record.

STORY 3: Italian Restaurant Opens in Downtown Canton

Palermo’s Original Pasta and Sandwiches (POPS), an Italian restaurant, opened in downtown Canton, Georgia, inside the historic Jones Building. The restaurant, owned by Andy and Amber Palermo, offers a range of Italian dishes, including pasta made in-house, chicken parmesan, seafood scampi, sandwiches, salads, and more. STORY 4: Safe Kids Cherokee Providing Car Seats to Families

Safe Kids Cherokee County, led by Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, has been awarded the 2024 Car Seat Mini Grant by the Georgia Department of Public Health. This grant, funded by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, enables Safe Kids Cherokee County to provide car seats and education to financially eligible families in the region. Since 2007, the mini grant has prevented serious injuries or deaths, saving over 425 children in Georgia involved in crashes. Car seats, when used correctly, reduce fatal injuries by 71% among infants and 54% among children aged 1 to 4 years in passenger cars.

STORY 5: Ball Ground-Based Company Pledges $75,000 in Support of COED

CAIRE Inc., a Ball Ground-based manufacturer of oxygen and cardiorespiratory diagnostics equipment, has pledged $75,000 over the next five years in support of the Cherokee Office of Economic Development (COED). This investment is part of the COED initiative, Cherokee By Choice 2.0, aiming for $375 million in capital investment and 2,200 direct jobs for Cherokee County. CAIRE's support will be utilized for workforce development and the "Work in Cherokee" campaign, focusing on local job opportunities, data analysis on wages and benefits, and addressing skills gaps to incentivize residents to work locally. The company's contribution reinforces its commitment to the community where its primary manufacturing hub is located.

STORY 6: Cherokee County Leaders Sell Land For Potential Housing Community

Cherokee County leaders have approved the sale of approximately 0.75 acres of surplus land at Patriots Park near Acworth to Ashton Atlanta Residential LLC for $240,000. The developer intends to combine the land with four other parcels for a future housing community. The sale is contingent upon Ashton obtaining necessary permits and approvals for the development. The land was originally purchased using park bond funds, and the proceeds from the sale will be used to enhance Patriots Park.

STORY 7: Federal Judge Rejects Voter Intimidation Charges Against Conservative Group in Georgia

A federal judge in Georgia ruled in favor of the conservative group True the Vote in a lawsuit involving their challenge to over 364,000 voters' eligibility. U.S. District Judge Steve Jones declared that True the Vote's actions did not amount to illegal voter intimidation, as claimed by Fair Fight Action, founded by Democrat Stacey Abrams. True the Vote had filed challenges ahead of the 2020 runoff elections, asserting that voters appeared ineligible due to residency changes. The judge found that the challenges didn't violate the Voting Rights Act, although some aspects of True the Vote's methods were criticized. The ruling is seen as significant for eligibility challenges under federal law.

  • Cherokee County Wants to Hear from You on Possible New Sales Tax

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Friday, January 5th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Cherokee County Wants to Hear from You on Possible New Sales Tax

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is actively seeking public feedback concerning the potential implementation of a new sales tax. The proposed tax could be used to offset property taxes or fund transportation projects.

Three types of sales taxes are being considered: a Local Option Sales Tax, Homestead Option Sales Tax, or a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The board has planned six town hall meetings throughout this month to gather public opinions on the matter.

The first town hall meeting will occur from 7-8 p.m. on January 8 in Cherokee Hall at the Cherokee County Administration Building. Additional town halls are scheduled for January 10, 15, 17, 22, and 23, at various locations across the county.

During these town hall meetings, officials will present the three tax options, explaining how each one operates, and then listen to residents' opinions on how to move forward.

Currently, Cherokee County is one of only three counties in Georgia, alongside Cobb and Gwinnett, that does not have an additional sales tax to help alleviate property tax and general fund expenditures.

    *** 01.02.24 - BIRTHDAY - CUBA GOODING JR***

I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.

    1. Grocery cards, gas money, golf lessons: Medicare Advantage plans stretch limits
    2. Clear Subscribers Face Longer Wait Times Than TSA Precheck, Highlighting New Challenges in Air Travel Industry
    3. Running Red Lights in Georgia Could Cost You up to $1,000, Warns State Law Enforcement

We’ll have all this and more coming up on the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger Podcast, and if you’re looking for Community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: CU of GA

    STORY 1: Medicare

Medicare Advantage plans continue to draw in elderly enrollees by offering appealing incentives such as grocery cards and even golf lessons. Supporters of these incentives argue that they foster healthier lifestyles, whereas critics express concerns that they may serve as a facade for less-than-stellar coverage. These incentives have become a significant factor in the promotion of these plans. Despite the conclusion of the open enrollment period, beneficiaries have another opportunity from January 1st to March 31st to switch their plans. This discussion delves into the intricate web of insurance options available to seniors, cautioning them to stay focused on the essential aspects of their plans amidst the allure of these perks. It also tackles the issue of measuring the effectiveness of these incentives in enhancing health outcomes, a task which presents its own set of challenges. In 2023, more than half (51%) of eligible Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans, according to Kaiser Family Foundation. Furthermore, nearly a quarter of these plans offer financial assistance for food and produce, as reported by Axios.

    STORY 2: Clear

The air travel industry is facing a new challenge that's affecting even those who've paid for convenience. Travelers who've subscribed to Clear, an annual $189 private program designed to expedite airport security checks via biometric identity verification, are finding themselves in line behind members of the less expensive TSA Precheck program, which costs $78 for five years. A surge in enrollment for both programs, combined with the introduction of more time-consuming 3-D luggage scanning machines and overall staffing shortages at airports, has resulted in longer wait times. Unfortunately, this means that Clear, despite its advanced technology, can sometimes be slower than TSA Precheck. Travelers are now left navigating a complex choice about which security line to choose, making their airport experience less streamlined than they'd hoped. This latest challenge highlights the ongoing issues in the aviation industry as it grapples with adapting to new technologies, increasing passenger numbers, and managing operational logistics.

    STORY 3: Red Lights

In Georgia, even if a red light is taking too long to turn green, drivers must not run it. Disobeying this rule is considered a misdemeanor and can result in a fine. STORY 4: Senior Facilities

A significant change is looming over Georgia's assisted living and personal care homes. State officials are contemplating a rollback of staffing requirements, a move which has sparked apprehension among advocates for the elderly who worry about potential safety compromises. This comes after Rep. Sharon Cooper addressed neglect and abuse issues in 2020, leading to an increase in staffing levels. Yet, the Georgia Senior Living Association is now advocating for a relaxation of these requirements. The proposed changes include a reduction in staff numbers in memory care units, a move that critics argue could negatively affect the quality of care provided. It's a pivotal time for the senior care sector in Georgia, as these decisions could significantly impact the lives of those residing in these facilities.

    STORY 5: Streaming Prices

Major alterations are on the horizon for Amazon Prime Video, starting January 29th. Brace yourself for the introduction of commercials during your beloved TV shows and films as Amazon Prime Video follows in the footsteps of other streaming platforms by offering different subscription levels. Prime members will have the option to select an ad-free tier priced at $2.99 per month in the U.S., ensuring a seamless streaming experience. This move comes as Disney recently increased their ad-free Disney+ subscription rate to $13.99/month, while Netflix's ad-free plan stands at $15.49/month. However, Amazon reassures us that there will be no amendments to the Prime membership cost in the upcoming year.

  • Metro Atlanta posts strong job growth in November

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Monday, January 1st, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Metro Atlanta posts strong job growth in November

In a notable development, the jobless rate in metro Atlanta dipped to 4.2% in November, compared to 4.3% the previous month. The data, provided by the State Department of Labor, indicates a solid job market, especially in the retail and hospitality sectors, reflecting a boost in shopping, dining, and entertainment activities.

This year, Atlanta's economic resilience has been conspicuous, attracting talent from across the state and contributing to the majority of new jobs in Georgia. The growth in the job market exceeded expectations, contradicting earlier predictions of an economic downturn. However, certain companies, including FAB Precision Sheetmetal and Truist Bank, have announced layoffs and branch closures, underscoring challenges within specific sectors.

Despite these variations, Atlanta's job base grew by 2.47% over the past year, outpacing both the state and national growth rates. With an unemployment rate of 4.2%, the city continues to demonstrate its economic vitality.
