STORY 1: Canton Man Sentenced to 15 Years For Armed Robbery

Brayden Nicholas Kirby, a Canton man, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following a negotiated guilty plea related to an armed robbery at a RaceTrac gas station in 2021. In the incident, Kirby, wearing a Halloween mask, pointed a handgun at two women pumping gas, demanding their phones and vehicle keys. After unsuccessful attempts to steal a truck, he took a backpack and fled on a bicycle. Kirby was apprehended with the victims' possessions and a loaded firearm. Sentenced to 25 years with 15 in confinement, Kirby admitted guilt to 12 counts, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, and firearm possession.

STORY 2: Giuliani Ordered to Pay Georgia Election Workers $148 Million

A Washington, D.C., jury has ordered former Trump campaign lawyer Rudolph Giuliani to pay $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, for defamation. Giuliani falsely accused them of manipulating ballots in the 2020 election, leading to violent threats against them. Earlier, a judge found Giuliani liable for defamation in a conspiracy with Donald Trump, the Trump campaign, OAN, and an OAN personality. The jury's sole task was to determine damages, and the awarded amount is $148 million. Giuliani did not testify, and the case is part of broader legal actions related to election subversion efforts.

STORY 3: Canton Martial Arts Instructor Charged With Hitting Child in the Face

A Canton martial arts instructor, Derrick Lamont Clark, has been arrested and charged with first-degree cruelty to children and battery after allegedly hitting a child with autism in the face at Cherokee Charter Academy on November 15. Clark, who teaches at Canton Warriors BJJ Academy, was released on a $7,500 bond and is no longer permitted on the academy's campus. Cherokee Charter Academy emphasized its commitment to student safety and stated that individuals violating standards are swiftly addressed. The academy offers training for both kids and adults. The Canton Warriors BJJ Academy did not provide a comment in response to the incident.

He joined Cherokee County School District at the beginning of this school year and was named the Georgia winner for the national honor in May for his success as principal of Pickens Junior High School.

STORY 5: Cherokee County Leaders Asking For Input on Highway 20 Overlay Zoning District

Cherokee County is seeking resident input for an overlay zoning district along Highway 20, from Canton to Forsyth County, as part of the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Highway 20 Corridor Widening Project. The Planning and Zoning Department will launch a visual preference survey from January 2 to February 16, allowing residents to influence the design vision for the corridor. The overlay will not modify existing zoning districts but establish a unique design standard. In-person public input meetings are scheduled for January 18 and February 7 at Victory Hall of the L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens Recreation Center, with an online survey link provided on the county website.

Hightower: Cherokee Schools Will Bring Back In-House Custodial Services

Cherokee County School District has announced plans to hire its own custodians again for the next school year, ending a decade of outsourcing custodial services. Superintendent Brian Hightower stated that a recent cost analysis showed the district could afford in-house custodial services at a rate similar to proposed vendor prices.

The new custodial employees will be paid on a scale based on experience, with full-time benefits. The district also plans to recruit about 20 substitute custodians. The projected total budget for custodial services next year is $12.5 million.

Hightower emphasized a long-term commitment to this decision and assured that custodians would receive the same benefits as other classified CCSD employees.

Georgia Economy Headed for ‘Soft Landing’ in 2024

The economic growth we experienced this year is expected to slow down in 2024 but not enough to cause a recession, says Ben Ayers, the dean of Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. He anticipates our Gross Domestic Product will increase by 1.1% next year, a decrease from this year's 3% growth but still outperforming the predicted sluggish national growth rate of 0.8%. Job growth in Georgia is also expected to rise by 0.7%, slower than this year's 2.3% gain but still higher than the projected national job growth of just 0.3%. Despite the slowdown, Georgia remains well-positioned to weather any economic turbulence.

STORY 1: Man Convicted in 2013 Armed Robbery at Canton Jewelry Store

Erin Stephon Arms, 39, has been convicted of armed robbery in connection with a 2013 incident at a Canton jewelry store by a Cherokee County jury. The robbery involved Arms entering the Cartersville Jewelry Exchange, pointing a gun at employees, and fleeing with over $50,000 worth of jewelry. DNA evidence found on discarded clothing near the crime scene and a recovered gun linked Arms to the robbery. The sentencing for the armed robbery will be scheduled at a later date. The case was investigated by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office and Canton Police Department, with prosecution led by the district attorney's office.

STORY 2: Cherokee County Man Convicted of Dogfighting

Randall Larry Thaxton, 59, has been convicted by a Cherokee County jury on nine counts of dogfighting and seven counts of cruelty to animals. The conviction followed an investigation initiated by the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office after a tip linked Thaxton to a dogfighter in Dallas, Georgia. A subsequent search warrant revealed evidence of dogfighting, including a break stick, documents connecting Thaxton's dogs to other known dogfighters, a journal detailing workout regimens, and contracts for selling dogs to the dogfighting community. The dogs found on Thaxton's property were examined and taken into custody by the Cherokee County Animal Shelter due to health issues. Sentencing will be scheduled at a later date. The case was investigated by the Cherokee County Marshal’s Office and prosecuted by the District Attorney's Office.

STORY 3: Woodstock Man Wanted for Insurance Fraud

Michael Preston, a former insurance agent from Woodstock, faces charges of insurance fraud and forgery for allegedly taking $3,500 from a customer. The charges were announced by the state Office Of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner. According to the investigation, Preston, who worked with State Farm, received a check from a consumer for an insurance premium payment but allegedly deposited the amount into his personal bank account instead of using it for its intended purpose. Warrants have been issued for Preston's arrest, and he remains wanted. He has been terminated from his position with State Farm.

Hembree has been serving as the WBL program coordinator at Sequoyah High School for seven years, contributing to the success of students like Emily Brown, who earned the 2023 Georgia WBL Student of the Year Award for the northwest region.

STORY 5: Georgia General Assembly Passes Republican-Drawn Congressional Map

The Georgia House has given final approval to a new congressional map in response to a federal judge's ruling that the current map violates the Voting Rights Act. The new map, passed along party lines by the Republican-controlled House, creates an additional Black-majority district in the western part of metro Atlanta, complying with the judge's order. Democrats argue that the map eliminates a "coalition" congressional district and accuse Republicans of political gerrymandering to maintain their 9-5 majority in Georgia's congressional delegation. The new maps for the state House and Senate were also adopted earlier in the week.

Canton Man Sentenced to 20 Years of Prison for Child Sexual Abuse

A Canton man, Jonathan Ricky Millwood, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his guilty plea for aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. The case started when a girl under 10 years old revealed to her mother that Millwood had touched her inappropriately. After a series of forensic interviews and a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam, male DNA was confirmed on the child, leading to Millwood's conviction. The victim's mother expressed relief that her daughter would be spared from the further trauma of testifying in court. Millwood will serve his sentence without a chance for parole, followed by life on probation. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life and is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. As stated by District Attorney Susan Treadaway, while no sentence can heal the trauma endured by the child, it's hoped that this verdict will provide some closure and allow the start of the healing process.
