I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cherokee is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.

Commercial: CU of GA
STORY 1: Police: Don't Leave Boxes for Christmas Gifts Out With Trash
Canton police are warning residents not to leave boxes out that might show what you or your loved ones got for Christmas. "Just a friendly reminder: Do not announce your gifts from Santa to criminals," the Canton Police Department said on its Facebook page. If you have large boxes, Canton PD advises that you break them down put them in the trash or recycle bin so they are out of sight. If possible, stagger the times that boxes are placed in the trash instead of putting them all in at the same time.
STORY 2: Judge Upholds New Georgia Congressional and Legislative Maps
U.S. District Judge Steve Jones upheld Georgia's new legislative and congressional maps, emphasizing that federal judges lack the authority to alter political power between parties in voting rights cases. The ruling rejected claims that the maps violated the Voting Rights Act and highlighted the legislative body's right to consider partisan advantage without violating Section 2. Although Democrats anticipated gains, the Republican-drawn maps maintain a 9-5 GOP advantage in the congressional delegation and secure control of the General Assembly. U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath announced plans to run in the new Black-majority district, reflecting ongoing debates on redistricting and political influence.
STORY 3: Where to Take Your Christmas Tree in Cherokee County
Cherokee County residents can recycle Christmas trees at various locations. The "Bring One for the Chipper" event at Hobgood Park on January 6 offers free tree seedlings to participants. Cherokee Recreation and Parks will accept trees from January 6 to 13, turning them into mulch for Patriots Park's dog park. Canton's Collection Site accepts trees from December 28 to 30 and January 4 to 6, open only to city residents. Woodstock's Bring One for the Chipper event at Olde Rope Mill Park on January 6 also collects trees for recycling until January 19. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers accepts trees at Lake Allatoona until January 3 for fish habitats.

STORY 4: Raffensperger Renews Call to End General Election Runoffs
Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has urged the General Assembly to eliminate general election runoffs in the state. Raffensperger argues that ending runoffs following the November elections would provide Georgians with a respite from politics during the holiday season. He previously raised this issue in December after the U.S. Senate runoff. Raffensperger contends that general election runoffs are unnecessary and a waste of tax dollars, especially when candidates like Raphael Warnock secured victory in both the general election and runoff. Georgia and Louisiana are the only states with general election runoffs, and Raffensperger wants Georgia to reconsider this practice.
STORY 5: Cherokee County Farm Bureau Receives GFB Award
Cherokee County Farm Bureau (CCFB) was honored at the 86th Annual Georgia Farm Bureau Convention for its outstanding member programs and agricultural advocacy activities. CCFB received the GFB Rewarding Excellence in Ag Program (REAP) Harvester Award in the large membership division. The REAP award recognizes county Farm Bureaus for their activities in organization/membership, advocacy, leadership development, education, and outreach. The award reflects CCFB's efforts between September 1, 2022, and August 31, 2023. The recognition highlights the dedicated volunteer leaders and staff's work in promoting agriculture within their local communities, particularly in schools and with elected officials.

STORY 6: Cherokee Schools Announces STEM Essay Contest Winners
The Cherokee County School District honored winners of the second annual Sixth-Grade Fall STEM Essay Contest, sponsored by Cobb EMC and Gas South. The contest aims to recognize student excellence in communicating STEM concepts. Winners from Cobb EMC's service area received cash prizes, ranging from $20 to $50. The contest, coordinated by CCSD's Office of Curriculum and Instruction, encourages STEM learning and helps students understand the real-world applications of their STEM lessons. The first-place winners included students from Creekland, Dean Rusk, E.T. Booth, Teasley, and Woodstock Middle Schools, with other students earning second, third, and fourth to tenth place across various schools.
STORY 7: Officials to Close the Gap on the Noonday Creek Trail
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Noonday Creek Trail Extension Project, connecting Woodstock and Cherokee County to Cobb County's trail networks. The project aims to close a 1.8-mile gap in the Noonday Creek Trail, linking the trailhead at Highway 92 in Woodstock to Noonday Park on Shallowford Road in Cobb County. The project will enhance recreational opportunities and regional transportation infrastructure, connecting Woodstock to a trail-focused community in Cobb County. Construction is set to begin in January 2024, with the trail progressing northward to connect with Woodstock's existing Noonday Creek Trail.
We’ll have closing comments after this.

Georgia State Senators Targeted by Swatting Calls
In a concerning series of events, multiple Georgia officials were targeted by swatting calls over the holiday season. State Senators Kay Kirkpatrick and John Albers, who represent parts of Cherokee County, were among those affected.
Swatting is a form of criminal harassment, where a false emergency is reported at someone's home. In both cases, law enforcement responded swiftly to the alleged threats, only to find the calls were hoaxes. The incident has raised serious concerns about the misuse of emergency services and public safety.
Both Kirkpatrick and Albers expressed their frustration at the misuse of law enforcement resources, with Albers warning that those responsible would be held accountable. This follows similar incidents targeting other state officials, including Senator Clint Dixon and U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Authorities urge the public to refrain from such dangerous activities and are working diligently to trace these calls.

Cherokee County Recycling Center Collects Over 20 Tons of Electronics
In a show of remarkable community spirit, over 300 vehicles drove through the Cherokee County Recycling Center for an electronics recycling event. The event, held on December 9, resulted in the collection of over 20 tons of recyclable material, according to Bryan Reynolds, the Director of Cherokee County Community Services Agency.
The event saw volunteers from various walks of life, including county employees, volunteers from Keep Cherokee Beautiful, and student-volunteers from Etowah High School. They worked tirelessly to fill several box trucks with recycled items, ranging from personal computers to large tube televisions.
District 3 Commissioner Benny Carter expressed his gratitude towards the volunteers and ECO Trading LLC for their support. Their collective efforts raised nearly $4,000 for the Keep Cherokee Beautiful organization.

2023's 118th Congress Records Historic Low in Productivity Amidst Political Turmoil, Passing Only 22 Bills
The 118th Congress, during the year 2023, has been marked as one of the least productive in modern history, passing a mere 22 pieces of legislation. The House and Senate saw a total of 724 and 352 bills voted on respectively, but only a fraction of them were successfully enacted, with a success rate of 0.001%. The year was riddled with political turbulence, including a delayed election for the House Speaker, disagreements over a debt ceiling bill, and the eventual ousting of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The limited number of enacted bills primarily revolved around topics such as veterans’ affairs, healthcare, defense, education, and public health. Despite the legislative gridlock, there appears to be a potential Senate discussion looming about additional support for Ukraine before the annual recess.

STORY 1: Composting Efforts to Combat Holiday Induced Environmental Issues
Now that the Christmas gifts have been opened and Christmas dinner has been consumed, local initiatives and composting efforts are aiming to address environmental issues during the holidays. Americans contribute to a 25% increase in waste, totaling 25 million tons during the holidays. Gift-giving, driven by sales, leads to unnecessary purchases, creating more waste. Unwanted gifts add to the problem, with 53% of Americans receiving them. Wrapping paper alone generates 40 million tons of waste annually. Online shopping contributes to excessive packaging, totaling 85 million tons of paper products each year. Food waste is another challenge, with 305 million pounds wasted annually from the holidays.
STORY 2: Holiday Air Travel Guide: What Can You Pack
Navigating through airport security during the holiday season can be daunting. Here's a quick rundown of what you can bring on your flight. Solid food items are generally allowed in both carry-on and checked bags. But TSA officers may need to inspect these at security checkpoints. Liquids and gels follow different rules. Wine and beer in unopened retail packaging are allowed. Declare them at check-in if in checked baggage and consider extra protection like freezer bags and bubble wrap. Golf clubs and bags can be checked in. For fishing equipment, check airline size limitations for carry-ons. Secure sharp tackle in checked bags. Bicycles have varying guidelines and fees, so consult your airline. Smaller instruments like guitars can be carried on, while larger ones must be checked in. All carry-on instruments may undergo security screening. Transporting weapons is allowed following TSA guidelines. Unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container can be checked in. For more information, contact the TSA.
STORY 3: Peak and Off-Peak Driving Hours for Christmas and New Year's in Georgia
The holiday season is upon us, and AAA predicts a record-breaking travel period in Georgia. An estimated 3.6 million Georgians are set to journey at least 50 miles between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1, 2024, a 2.8% rise from last year. The vast majority, about 3.3 million, will drive, while others will take to the skies. According to AAA's VP of Travel, Debbie Haas, this could be Georgia's busiest year-end holiday travel season on record. To avoid the rush, aim for travel before 10 a.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. Peak congestion times to avoid range from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Dec. 26 to 30. If you're driving on I-20 westbound from Augusta to Atlanta, be prepared - traffic could be 23% heavier than usual.

In an unexpected turn of events, a Virginia woman's $3.99 thrift store purchase turned into a $107,100 windfall. Jessica Vincent bought a colorful vase from a Goodwill store, not knowing it was part of the rare Pennelatte series by Italian architect Carlo Scarpa from the 1940s. The vase was auctioned at the Wright Auction House in Chicago to an anonymous private European collector. Vincent plans to use her unexpected earnings to install an HVAC system in her recently acquired farmhouse. This story serves as a vivid reminder that hidden treasures can indeed be found in the most unexpected places.
STORY 5: EVENTS THIS WEEK
Atlanta Ballet's unique rendition of "The Nutcracker" returns to the Cobb Energy Centre, delighting audiences with an innovative blend of traditional stagecraft and modern technology. This reimagined classic is set to enchant viewers at 2pm today. Stay Safe and Festive: How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires this Holiday Season
As we gather around our Christmas trees on Christmas Day, it's important to remember real Christmas trees can pose a serious fire hazard. Unlike artificial ones, dry real trees are highly flammable and can go up in flames in seconds.
The National Fire Protection Association has found that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires caused by Christmas trees each year from 2016 to 2020, leading to injuries and millions in property damage.
While a well-watered tree is resistant to flames, a dehydrated one ignites easily and can be consumed by fire in mere seconds.
So, remember to water your trees daily, keep them at least three feet away from heat sources, and make sure they don't block exits. And let's not forget - half of all home decoration fires in December are caused by candles. So, whether you're lighting up your tree or the rest of your home, exercise caution with decorations and lights. Stay safe, stay festive, and have a wonderful Christmas!

Starting in January, members of Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) will experience a decrease in their power bills. The WPCA adjusts periodically to account for fluctuations in wholesale power and other costs. The reduction will result in an average decrease of $16.63 per 1,000 kWh consumed for member-owners, compared to December 2023. The board will continue to review and adjust the WPCA as needed to maintain affordable electricity.

Woodstock Leaders Approve Engineering and Design Contracts for Little River Park
The Woodstock City Council has approved three service agreements with Earth Elements for the engineering and design of Little River Park. The agreements, which total $340,450, cover each of the three sections of the park: the Linear Corridor, the Woodlands Corridor, and the Trickum Road section.
This comes after Woodstock voters approved a $24 million parks bond in November, with a significant portion earmarked for the over 100-acre Little River Park project. The park, located off Trickum Road near Barnes Road, is planned to feature 5.5 miles of trails, nearly 5 acres of open field space, a disc golf course, playgrounds, and more.
Phase one of the project, the Trickum Road Park Zone, is set to include a treehouse trail, a playground, and a pond for fishing and water activities. The Linear Corridor Zone will primarily feature a walking trail and boardwalk, while the Woodlands Park Zone will include open fields, a dog park, and a disc golf course.
The council also approved a $16,100 service agreement with Earth Elements for a flood study of the future park

Film Tax Credit a Net Loss to Georgia
Georgia's film tax credit program is reportedly causing a financial loss for the state, according to a recent evaluation by the Department of Audits and Accounts. The study aligns with other state findings on film tax incentives. These results come as state lawmakers prepare recommendations on tax breaks as economic drivers. Despite wide support in certain sectors, skepticism remains, with $4.1 billion in unclaimed tax credits. Critics argue that the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as lowering income tax rates. The report also notes that for every $1 of net labor income supported by the film tax credit, $24.44 in credits are generated.
