Stamp Shock: Navigating the Sixth Price Hike Since 2019
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced yet another increase in the price of first-class "forever" stamps, marking the sixth rise since 2019. Starting from Sunday, the cost of these stamps will surge from 66 to 68 cents. This follows two increases in 2023, when the price of forever stamps rose from 60 to 63 cents in January, and then again to 66 cents in July.
Additionally, the prices for domestic postcard stamps will increase from 51 to 53 cents and international postcards will go from $1.50 to $1.55.
The USPS justified this increase by pointing to rising operating expenses due to inflation and the impacts of a previously flawed pricing model. They emphasized that changes to mail service costs are necessary to provide the Postal Service with much-needed revenue.
Despite these increases, The USPS maintains that its prices remain among the most affordable globally.
When adjusted for inflation, the price of postage in January 2019, which was 50 cents, equates to about 61 cents in spring 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' CPI inflation calculator.

STORY 5: Raffensperger: No time to take QR codes off Georgia ballots this year
Georgia's Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, expressed support for moving to human-readable text on paper ballots but acknowledged the challenge of implementing the change before the upcoming 2024 elections. Some Republican legislators in Georgia have proposed removing QR codes from paper ballots, citing concerns about transparency and voter trust. Raffensperger defended the state's current election system and noted that discussions about eliminating QR codes have been ongoing. He highlighted the need for technology from vendors to support the change, and while supporting the idea, he emphasized the practical challenges of implementing it in time for the upcoming elections.

Tips to Keep Homes Warm Amid Frigid Weather in Georgia
As frigid temperatures grip Georgia, residents are urged to take proactive steps to ensure their homes remain warm and energy-efficient. Electric- and natural gas-powered heating systems play a crucial role in these conditions, prompting Georgia utilities to implement policies preventing service disconnections when temperatures plummet below 32 degrees, even for customers with outstanding bills. Here are some key recommendations from Georgia Power, Atlanta Gas Light, and Georgia's electric membership cooperatives (EMCs):
Lower your home thermostat to 68 degrees or below during extreme cold spells. This eases the strain on heating systems, reducing the risk of malfunctions.
For those experiencing financial hardship, there's a 24-hour amnesty period for customers behind on bills during sub-freezing temperatures, it's essential not to solely rely on it.
Examine your insulation to prevent heat loss. Inspect weather stripping around doors and windows for any gaps. Homeowners with attics are advised to explore the addition of more insulation to enhance heat retention.
Maintain electric furnace systems by changing air filters monthly and pleated filters every three months to sustain efficiency. Gas customers are advised to keep meters visible and regularly inspect for any signs of damage.

Kemp Urges Lawmakers to Stay Cautious With State Spending
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and the state's budget writers are committed to maintaining a cautious approach to spending despite a significant surplus. Governor Kemp highlighted $5 billion in tax relief and proposed accelerating additional tax cuts during legislative hearings. The state's revenue growth in recent years, driven by capital gains, is expected to decline due to an economic slowdown. State Economist Robert Buschman predicts a mild recession in the first half of the year, impacting tax collections. Kemp believes proposed pay increases for state employees and teachers will act as a buffer against the recession, aiming to keep people working and the state in good shape.

STORY 1: Elton John auctioning art from Atlanta home via Christie’s
Elton John is set to auction part of his extensive art collection from his recently sold Atlanta home. The auction, beginning on February 21 at Christie's, is expected to generate at least $10 million. John, who recently retired from performing, sold his Buckhead condo last fall for $7,225,000. The items for auction include a custom Damien Hirst, an 18th-century costume by Sandy Powell, and silver leather boots with E and J embossed. The decision to sell is emotional for John, who, along with husband David Furnish, is culling the collection. The auctions will be held both live and online, showcasing different aspects of John's life and collection. A public exhibition in New York City will precede the auctions from February 9 to 21, featuring a pop-up gift shop with John's merchandise.
STORY 2: Education Department error could lower U.S. students' financial aid amounts
An error by the U.S. Education Department in calculating financial aid could result in lower subsidies for students. The mistake involves not updating a key part of its aid calculation index for inflation, which has risen approximately 20% since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. This affects the amount of a family's income that is "protected" in the adjusted gross income calculation, which determines a student's financial aid need. Unless this is corrected, families may appear to have more resources than they do, leading to less financial aid for students. The issue was first reported in late 2021 and the department is currently determining how to address it.
STORY 3: Metro Atlanta will get up to 400 new electric vehicle charging ports
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has received a $6.1 million federal grant to install 300 to 400 electric vehicle (EV) charging ports across 20 counties in metro Atlanta, particularly in areas where such infrastructure is currently limited. The move comes as part of efforts to prepare for the upcoming EV revolution and ensure equitable access to charging facilities. Charging at these new stations will be free. The grant is part of a wider $622.6 million fund allocated by the U.S. Department of Transportation under the bipartisan infrastructure law for nationwide charger installations. The first chargers under this program are expected to be operational in 12 to 18 months.

The South Carolina estate of the notorious Murdaugh family, known as the Moselle Estate, is going up for auction with a minimum bid of $1.1 million. Alex Murdaugh, the former resident, was convicted of murdering his wife and son in 2021 and is currently appealing his sentence. The property has changed hands several times since the crime. Proceeds from the initial sale went toward legal fees, the surviving son, a local bank, and victims of a 2019 boat crash linked to the family. The estate, which features a mix of classic charm and modern amenities, includes a 5,300-square-foot home on 21 acres. The auction will take place on February 15.
STORY 5: Michigan coronation is most-watched title game in four years
The Michigan-Washington College Football Playoff National Championship game marked a four-year high in ratings and viewership. Averaging a 12.3 rating and 25.05 million viewers across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Deportes, the game saw a 41% increase in ratings and a 45% increase in viewership compared to the previous year. Michigan's victory delivered the second-largest audience of the college football season and ranked fourth in viewership among all non-NFL sportscasts since 2018. The full College Football Playoff averaged 23.6 million viewers, up 15% from the previous year, and marked the highest average since the 2017-18 season. The entire 43-game bowl season averaged a 2.3 rating and 4.48 million viewers, showcasing a 5% increase in viewership over the previous year.

Sky High Concerns: Georgia Airports Battling Soaring Numbers of Intercepted Loaded Firearms
In 2023, there has been a notable surge in the interception of firearms at Georgia's federally regulated airports, particularly at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) revealed that a staggering 93% of the firearms intercepted at airports nationwide were found to be loaded.
This increase in intercepted firearms correlates with a rise in the overall number of passengers. The TSA highlighted that in Georgia, the rate of firearms detection exceeded twice the national average. To provide a specific insight, one firearm was discovered for every 61,646 passengers screened in the state. This concerning trend underscores the need for heightened awareness and security measures at Georgia's airports.

Dennis Wayne Prince, a 52-year-old Cherokee County man, was arrested by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for allegedly shooting another man in the leg. The charges against Prince include two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated battery, and one count of possession of a firearm during certain felonies. STORY 2: Two Teens Killed in Woodstock Crash
Two teenagers died following a single-vehicle crash on Towne Lake Parkway near Woodstock. The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office reported that a Mazda 6 with five occupants struck a tree in the center median. One passenger, 17-year-old Gabriel Escandon from Marietta, was pronounced dead at the scene, while another passenger, 18-year-old Esteban Cortes-Rendon from Woodstock, died at the hospital. The driver, a 17-year-old from Smyrna, and two other passengers, a 17-year-old from Marietta and an 18-year-old from Tulsa, Oklahoma, sustained injuries. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing. Cortes-Rendon had turned 18 that day.

STORY 5: Kemp Endorses School Vouchers Push
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp called on state lawmakers to pass a private school vouchers bill during his State of the State address. The bill, which failed to pass in the General Assembly last year, aims to provide $6,000 scholarships to Georgia students in low-performing schools for private education costs. Democrats have opposed vouchers, citing concerns about diverting tax dollars from public schools, while rural Republicans worry about the limited availability of private schools in rural areas. Kemp emphasized an all-encompassing approach to education, urging collaboration for the best educational opportunities. He also highlighted proposed spending initiatives, including pay raises, school safety enhancements, and mental health funding.

STORY 6: Canton Hears From Residents on Downtown Plans
Canton leaders are considering a master plan for the downtown area and hosted a public input meeting for residents to provide feedback. The meeting featured tables with drawings of possible intersection improvements, including a four-way intersection or roundabout at Brown Street and East Main Street. Other proposals addressed North Street, Main Street, and Railroad Street. Residents and city staff contributed ideas for commercial development, traffic patterns, sidewalks, greenspace, trails, and street furniture. Boards at City Hall displayed options for sidewalk and curb configurations, street furniture, bike racks, wayfinding signage, and public art. The proposed plan is expected to go to the Canton City Council for discussion and a vote in the spring.
STORY 7: New Neighborhood Coming to Cherokee County
David Weekley Homes will construct Havencroft, a 69-home neighborhood in Cherokee County near Woodstock, with homes starting in the high $600,000s. The single-home community will be located off Trickum Road south of Highway 92, within five miles of downtown Woodstock. The VIP event at Havencroft on March 9 will offer attendees the chance to preview floor plans, meet the builder and team members, enjoy food truck tapas, and learn more about the area. The neighborhood is expected to open for public sales on March 30, and families moving into Havencroft will be zoned to Little River Elementary, Mill Creek Middle, and River Ridge High Schools.

Kemp Endorses School Vouchers Push
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp urged lawmakers to pass a private school vouchers bill during his annual State of the State address, emphasizing the need for an "all-of-the-above approach" to education, including public, private, homeschooling, and charter options. The Senate had passed similar legislation last year, offering $6,000 scholarships for students in low-performing schools, but it failed in the House due to bipartisan opposition. Kemp, focusing on a $2 billion spending plan, also proposed state income tax cuts, pay raises for employees and teachers, school safety enhancements, and increased mental health spending. Democrats criticized Kemp for not supporting Medicaid expansion and accused him of defunding public schools.
