The Cherokee County Board of Education has unanimously approved the fiscal year 2024 budget, which includes a significant pay raise for teachers. The budget, recommended by Superintendent Brian Hightower, allocates a $4,500 increase in teacher salaries, with $2,000 coming from the state budget and the remainder funded locally. Despite concerns about rising property taxes, the district will maintain the current property tax rate while experiencing a 15% increase in overall local tax revenue. The budget also includes a 3% pay raise for classified staff and signing bonuses for employees. The starting salary for teachers with a bachelor's degree will be raised to $53,500 per year. Additionally, funds are allocated for additional teacher positions, facility repairs, technology upgrades, and construction projects. The district projects an enrollment of 41,635 students and plans to hire more staff in specific program areas. The full budget details can be found on the Cherokee County School District's website.

STORY 2: station
Cherokee County has recently opened a new fire station, Fire Station 29, located on Highway 20 near Autumn Brook Drive in Canton. The station officially went into service on June 11, as announced by the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. The addition of this station is expected to significantly reduce response times in that area of Cherokee County. The fire station is currently equipped with one staffed fire engine and has a team of six firefighters assigned to it. The opening of this station follows the county's purchase of a modular home in December, which served as temporary housing for the firefighters until a more permanent station could be constructed. The construction of the fire station is funded by the 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).
Story 3: firefighters
Lt. Dave Burnaugh, a firefighter who has been battling brain and kidney cancer, has returned to his station after a 10-month absence. Firefighters from Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, along with neighboring departments, gathered at Fire Station 32 to welcome him back. Lt. Burnaugh, a 16-year veteran, fell ill while on duty last year and was later diagnosed with a Stage 3 astrocytoma brain tumor and a Stage 1 kidney tumor. He underwent brain surgery, radiation, kidney surgery, and chemotherapy. The U.S. Attorney's Office emphasized the importance of proper billing and holding healthcare providers accountable for overbilling federal healthcare programs. The allegations spanned from May 2015 to December 2019. The settlement also addressed an arrangement that violated the Anti-Kickback Statute, where a laboratory paid the salary of an individual in exchange for urine drug test referrals. A whistleblower will receive $118,000 from the settlement, and no determination of liability has been made.

Canton city leaders are considering maintaining the property tax rate for the upcoming year, and residents are encouraged to provide input. The proposed millage rate for the 2024 fiscal year in Canton, set at 5.4 mills, is the same as the current rate since 2017. The rollback rate, which would generate the same revenue as the previous year, is 4.8 mills. The city's tax rate includes payments to Cherokee County for fire services, which accounts for about 3.2 mills. Under the proposed rate, the city anticipates a 23.53% increase in tax revenue, amounting to nearly $2.1 million. Public hearings will be held on June 15, July 6, and July 20, with the council vote scheduled for July 20. The millage rate is separate from the Cherokee County government and school district tax rates.

Story 1. award
The Georgia Public Safety Educators Association (GPSEA) has honored Capt. Ann Segers, a long-serving firefighter and fire safety educator in Cherokee County, by naming its Educator of the Year award after her. Segers, who joined the fire department in 1988, was instrumental in promoting fire safety and education in the community. She was the first person in Georgia to obtain credentials as an NPQ Fire Safety Educator and made significant contributions to the field. After her retirement in 2005, Segers continued volunteering with the department until her passing in May 2022. The first Ann Segers Educator of the Year Award will be presented at the 2024 Georgia Fire Safety Symposium. Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com
STORY 2: voters
According to a report by the Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR), Georgia's voter registration rate increased from 78% to 98% during the first four years of implementing automatic voter registration. The state introduced automatic registration in 2016, updating voter records whenever an individual updates their driver's license information. The report also highlights that 97% of Georgians have both a driver's license and Social Security number associated with their voter registration, improving the accuracy of voter rolls. The registration rate has become more representative of Georgia's population, with a narrower gap between the overall population of younger voters and registered voters. The report also shows a significant decrease in inactive voters on the rolls. Automatic voter registration has proven successful, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing voter challenges.
Story 3: 500k
The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has been awarded a $518,000 grant from the state to purchase new license plate-reading cameras. The funds will be used to buy 35 Flock Safety cameras, which can capture license plates, and cover their maintenance for five years. These cameras are valuable for locating missing and wanted individuals and are frequently utilized by detectives investigating crimes. The grant is part of a larger allocation of over $83 million for public safety projects throughout the state. The funding aims to enhance law enforcement staffing, support violent crime reduction initiatives, and invest in technology and equipment to address community violence exacerbated by the pandemic. The grant is provided through the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds program established by the American Rescue Plan Act.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services' Fire Station 7 has been dedicated to retired Fire Chief and county Commissioner Raymond Gunnin, honoring his more than 40 years of public service. A ceremony took place at the station, attended by county and fire department officials, family, and friends. Gunnin's contributions to the fire department were recognized, with Chairman Harry Johnston stating that the department would have lost significant progress without him. The dedication was initially made in 2020 through a resolution and proclamation, and a plaque was unveiled during the ceremony. Gunnin joined the county as a volunteer firefighter in 1977, rose through the ranks, and served as fire chief until his retirement in 2011. He later became a county commissioner. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson acknowledged Gunnin's mentorship and influence on his own career. Gunnin attributed the department's success to the collective effort and dedication of the firefighters.

The fire, which occurred near Woodstock, caused significant damage to the home of Casey and Tommy DiGiacomo and their two sons. While there were no reported injuries, the family lost their cherished memories and belongings. The community has come together to support them by organizing a GoFundMe campaign to provide shelter, basic needs, and help in restoring their home. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have started accidentally on the back porch. Additionally, a cat from the household has gone missing. In the last day or so, the fundraising page has raised over $12,000. Those interested in donating or obtaining more information should visit tribuneledgernews.com
