  • Cherokee fire department: Stay safe around fireworks this July 4

From the Ingles Studios, this is your news minute on the cherokee tribune ledger podcast, presented by Dayco Systems. Today is Friday June 30th, and I'm Brian Giffin.
As the Fourth of July approaches, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services is urging residents to prioritize safety while using fireworks during celebrations. They recommend attending public fireworks shows for the safest experience. However, for those planning to use fireworks, the department provides several safety tips. These include purchasing fireworks from licensed dealers, following state laws, carefully reading labels, and having adult supervision. It is crucial not to allow children to ignite fireworks and to wear safety glasses when handling them. Other precautions involve lighting only one firework at a time, using fireworks outdoors in a clear area away from buildings and vehicles, and never attempting to relight a firework. Additionally, having a garden hose or bucket of water nearby is advised, and caution should be exercised with animals to prevent fear and stress caused by the fireworks' noise and lights.

  • Georgia getting $1.3 billion in federal funds for broadband expansion

From the Ingles Studios, this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast, presented byCredit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, June 28th, and I'm Brian Giffin.
The Biden administration has announced that Georgia will receive $1.3 billion as part of a $42 billion federal investment in broadband expansion, the largest in U.S. history. This funding, which comes from the bipartisan infrastructure spending bill, aims to improve access to affordable and high-speed internet across the state. Approximately 15% of Georgians currently lack reliable broadband access, and this investment will help address that gap. The Georgia Technology Authority will distribute the funds to local contractors to build out the state's broadband network. U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock has expressed support for this investment, highlighting the positive impact it will have on hundreds of thousands of Georgians and the competitiveness of local communities. Warnock has also raised concerns about the accuracy of the FCC's broadband map, suggesting that it may underestimate the number of locations in Georgia lacking high-speed internet service.

Chang's parents were awarded the verdict, and they expressed their relief in holding someone accountable for their son's death. 5. Gang members sentenced for 50 auto break-ins in Cherokee County

Seven members of criminal street gangs have been sentenced to at least 10 years in prison in connection with a series of auto break-ins that occurred in Cherokee County, Georgia, in 2019. The defendants admitted to violating the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. The break-ins, which targeted around 50 vehicles in various neighborhoods, resulted in the theft of money, firearms, and other personal belongings. The group, comprising members from different gangs, worked together to obtain illegal funds. The defendants, including two juveniles, were arrested by law enforcement while attempting to commit additional crimes. Assistant District Attorney Kelly Chavis, who prosecuted the case, emphasized the evidence of collaboration among the gang members. The defendants entered negotiated guilty pleas and were sentenced individually. They will serve prison time, face restrictions on contact with victims and co-defendants, and be banned from Cherokee County and association with any criminal street gang members or associates.

The training, which takes place annually, aims to prepare law enforcement and fire personnel for potential real-life scenarios. The three-day training involved an active shooter scenario and a rescue task force scenario. Participants, including about 140 to 150 individuals from multiple agencies, focused on responding to an active shooter within a school, evaluating their ability to identify threats, handle different situations, and ensure the safety of innocent individuals. The training promotes coordination and standardization among agencies to enhance preparedness and effective response in case of an actual incident.

It also mandates the use of U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets at all times during wakeboarding and wakesurfing and prohibits these activities between sunset and sunrise. Katie Callaway, a junior forward for Etowah High School's girls' soccer team, had an exceptional season, scoring 23 goals out of the team's total of 39. Her performance led Etowah to their first 10-win season since 2017, including a 5-0 victory in the state playoffs. Callaway was named the Cherokee County Girls Soccer Player of the Year by the county's coaches. The team's success was attributed to their strong defense, which allowed only one goal in region play. Callaway played a pivotal role in key moments, including a four-goal performance and a decisive penalty kick. Despite having several young players, the team showcased excellent chemistry and teamwork.
