  • Reinhardt dedicates courtyard to Ken White

From the Ingles Studios this is your NewsMinute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast, presented by Dayco Systems. Today is Wednesday, June 7th, and I'm Brian Giffin
The outdoor plaza leading to Reinhardt University's Hasty Student Life Center has been named after Ken White, the Chair of the Board of Trustees. The decision was made during a recent board meeting, with unanimous approval to honor White for his service and philanthropy. A plaque will be permanently placed in the plaza to recognize his commitment to the student body. This location was previously the site of the Ken White Student Center, which was made possible by White's generosity, improving the quality of life for Reinhardt students. White's name is already displayed on various gifts he has provided to the university, including the football field, indoor athletic facility, music center, and atrium in the Falany Performing Arts Center. President Mark Roberts acknowledges White's lasting impact as a trustee and benefactor, and the plaque will be a symbol of his contributions for generations to come.

The program offers forgivable deferred payment loans ranging from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $10,000. For the year 2023, the council has allocated up to $100,000 for 10 approved applications. The Georgia state Senate has been actively involved in efforts to reform or repeal the state's certificate of need law (CON), which governs hospitals and healthcare services. A newly formed Senate study committee consisting of senators, healthcare executives, and an insurance industry representative will begin meeting in June to explore options for reforming the law. The CON law requires applicants to demonstrate the need for new medical facilities or services to the state Department of Community Health. The push for CON reform or repeal came through two bills introduced by Senate Republicans, but neither bill passed the House. A House study committee on CON is also expected to convene in the coming months.

Cherokee County's court system has been awarded $1.3 million in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act. The Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit, which exclusively serves Cherokee County, will receive the funds primarily for audio-visual equipment upgrades. Out of the total amount, $1.2 million will be used to upgrade the audio-visual equipment in all courtrooms, while the remaining funds will cover the expenses of senior judges, court reporters, and bailiffs associated with the circuit. The Blue Ridge circuit is one of 21 circuits in the state that requested A/V equipment upgrades to address case backlogs caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The upgrades are expected to improve efficiency and reduce technical delays in court proceedings. Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael P. Boggs expressed pride in the progress made by judges and court personnel in implementing their grant-funded case backlog plans. Get more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com

        2. Army
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is emphasizing the importance of water safety for individuals and families visiting lakes and rivers this summer. They provide essential tips to prevent accidents and save lives. It is crucial to be prepared for unexpected situations, as accidents can happen quickly. Wearing a life jacket significantly increases the chances of survival in case of an unexpected fall into the water. Understanding the difference between swimming in open water and a pool is vital, and it's never too late to improve swimming abilities. Alcohol and water are a dangerous combination that can lead to disorientation and drowning. Boater's hypnosis, caused by environmental factors, can impair reaction time. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a risk even on open motorboats, so proper precautions should be taken. Constant supervision of children near water is crucial, and they should always wear properly fitted life jackets. Water temperature can be significantly colder than air temperature, so wearing a life jacket is essential for survival.

        3. Hyundai
Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution are partnering to construct a $4.3 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery plant here in Georgia. The plant will be adjacent to the Hyundai EV "Metaplant" currently under construction. This project is anticipated to create 3,000 jobs, constituting a significant portion of the $5.5 billion investment in the Metaplant project announced by Hyundai. U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff played a role in facilitating the deal through discussions with executives from both companies, and he credited tax incentives provided by the Inflation Reduction Act for making the project possible. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his satisfaction with Georgia's progress toward becoming the EV capital of the nation. The new EV battery plant is projected to commence operations by the end of 2025.

        4. Menstrual
Cherokee Women's Health Specialists is conducting a donation drive for menstrual products to support MUST Ministries. The ongoing drive has already collected over 300 boxes of menstrual hygiene products with the help of patients and staff. Donations can be made in person or through an Amazon wish list. Dr. James Haley, an OB/GYN at Cherokee Women's Health, expressed gratitude for the generosity of patients and the community. The initiative aims to address period poverty, a situation where individuals lack access to affordable menstrual hygiene products, which can negatively impact mental, physical, and social well-being. The donated products will benefit various individuals, including seniors, young girls, and clients of MUST Ministries. Cherokee Women's Health Specialists has locations in Canton and Woodstock.

Emergency services rushed Letson to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries and passed away. Phillips, the car driver, was also taken to the same hospital for serious injuries that were deemed non-life threatening. Additionally, a minor who was in the car sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the hospital as well. For more news about your community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. A woman named Catherine Walker, aged 38 and from Woodstock, has been arrested on charges of abusing three children over several years. She is facing three counts each of first-degree cruelty to children and aggravated assault family violence. The allegations state that she strangled the children and used belts and other objects to strike them while they were staying or visiting her home. The abuse has had a significant impact on the victims' emotional, physical, and mental well-being, resulting in thoughts of self-harm and the need for therapy. Walker was taken into custody on May 24 and remains in jail with a bond set at $34,500….check back for updates at tribuneledgernews.com

          STORY 2: road

Motorists in Cherokee County should anticipate delays on Union Hill Road due to multiple roadway improvement projects. Beginning on May 30 and lasting until July 31, Union Hill Road (South) at the intersection with Lower Union Hill Road will be closed for an intersection improvement project, including the construction of a roundabout. Union Hill Road (North) and Old Jones will remain open with flagging operations in place. A detour will be in effect using Arbor Hill Road, Gaddis Road, and East Cherokee Drive. Additionally, the Georgia Department of Transportation will close Union Hill Road at Highway 20 as part of the Highway 20 widening project. Both closures may lead to accessibility challenges, so drivers should plan alternative routes.

          Story 5: hvac

Fritts Heating and Air, an HVAC business here in Cherokee County, has been accused by a former employee of violating the Clean Air Act by releasing a pollutant into the air. The employee, Charles Rife, recorded a video showing workers from the company venting Freon into the air from old air conditioners. The Clean Air Act prohibits the venting of ozone-depleting refrigerants while maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of AC and refrigeration equipment. Rife reported the alleged violation to state and federal officials and shared the video with WSB-TV. Fritts Heating and Air denies the allegations and states that all their technicians are EPA certified. Violating the Clean Air Act can result in civil administrative penalties. The EPA did not comment on the enforcement activities.    More in a moment
