Episode 122 – Canine Sociability with Daniel Shaw
Dogs are social creatures and the need for social connection and social experiences as well as the lack of those can sometimes result in unwanted behavioural presentations.
In this super-cool episode, Daniel and I chat about:
· The difference between fear or panic when dogs are separated from social partners and frustration at lacking or hampered social interactions with other dogs and the neurobiological systems that underlie both of these scenarios!
· Social buffering and how this can really help some dogs that are perhaps fearful or anxious.
· How we can help dogs adapt better to differing social demands.
· Differing attachment styles and how these can impact social confidence and security.
· A case I saw the same day as the recording that posed a number of challenges from a canine sociability point of view.
Daniel and I are both really interested in the neurobiological and neurobiochemical underpinnings of behaviour and, dare I say it, can totally geek out about the brain processes that underlie behaviour as well as how we can practically apply this to our cases.
If you're in any way interested in canine social behaviour, neurobiology and treatment approaches of some of the socially motivated behavioural challenges we see in our canine patients, this episode is a must-listen!
