The March of History: Julius Caesar

15. Defiling the Bona Dea

Listen Later

Julius Caesar’s Praetorship ends with a scandalous bang. Cross-dressing combines with sacrilege to create a scandal the likes of which Rome has never seen. We introduce you to a new individual whose appetite for personal vendettas is unparalleled in history. While Julius Caesar attempts to extricate himself from the controversy without destroying his political career, his creditors grow impatient. Enter onto the stage, Publius Claudius Pulcher.

Correction: While the Claudii go back to some of the earliest days of the Roman Republic (specifically, 6 years after the founding of the Republic), they were in fact originally a Sabine family. The Sabines were at war with the Romans and the Claudii defected and joined Rome. Therefore I believe it would be inaccurate to call them a “Founding Family of Rome” as I say in this episode. Additionally, The Julii (Julius Caesar’s family) are believed to date back to the time of the Roman Kings and therefore would have been an older family in Rome than the Claudii.
