Does the Giants camp fight actually matter?

By itself, probably not—but the circumstances make it more interesting because Gipson and Jones are competing for roster spots and somehow lost their tempers during a walk-through rather than a padded practice.

Dan Duggan described the two as “a couple featherweights exchanging punches,” while John Harbaugh dismissed the incident as “much ado about nothing.” Drew agrees that training-camp fights happen every year and rejects the idea that this represents some major locker-room problem. The strange part is simply how it happened on one of the least physical days of camp.

The episode begins with Stefon Diggs signing a one-year deal with Washington after producing 85 receptions for 1,013 yards last season. Diggs clearly makes the Commanders more talented on paper, but Drew sees the timing of the move as evidence that Washington was not comfortable with its receiving corps and became desperate to add another proven weapon around Jayden Daniels.

There was better news involving Malik Nabers. He progressed into team walk-through work against the defense after spending most of camp in individual drills, routes and controlled rehabilitation work. It was not a return to full practice, but it was another meaningful step toward eventually getting him back into live football periods.

Dru Phillips’ situation is more immediate. The Giants’ starting nickel is expected to miss some time with a mild knee sprain, although Harbaugh said, “The good news is he’s going to be okay.” The absence creates an opportunity for Ar’Darius Washington and gives the Giants a chance to test how much secondary depth they actually have behind Phillips.

The offense is also getting creative in short yardage. Theo Johnson took direct snaps Wednesday before Patrick Ricard got his chance Thursday. At roughly 300 pounds, Ricard gives the Giants a way to attack inches-to-go situations without unnecessarily putting Jaxson Dart at the bottom of a pile. Drew is firmly in favor of experimenting with the package if it means protecting the franchise quarterback.

Another unusual Harbaugh-style project arrived when the Giants signed Grant Finley, a 281-pound fullback/defensive lineman who previously participated in rookie minicamp. Patrick Ricard entered the NFL with a similarly unusual background before becoming a six-time Pro Bowler. Finley is nowhere near that level yet, but the parallel makes him more interesting than the typical late-camp addition.

Did Jaxson Dart actually take a meaningful step forward?

Dart created touchdowns, explosive completions and successful third-down plays, but his two interceptions showed why the Giants cannot declare the offense fixed after one productive practice.

Drew and Rob begin with the Giants’ latest roster moves. Veteran cornerback David Long Jr. returned to the organization, D.J. James made two immediate plays during his first practice, Roy Robertson-Harris was placed on injured reserve and Beaux Collins was waived/injured.

Tuesday’s practice produced another complicated Dart moment. He scrambled for a touchdown during the final situational period, then threw the football at Greg Newsome and drew a 15-yard taunting penalty. Ben Sauls still converted the resulting 48-yard kick, but the mistake raised questions about Dart’s emotional control.

Dart accepted responsibility during the team meeting and responded Wednesday with his best collection of positive plays. He threw multiple touchdowns, converted third downs and created a score with his legs. Layne and Campbell still intercepted him, and the hosts question whether facing the second-team defense helped manufacture a needed confidence-building day.

Odell Beckham Jr. became the show’s largest roster debate. Beckham caught passes from all three Giants quarterbacks, received more first-team work and produced contested, sideline and downfield catches. He is no longer surviving entirely on reputation, but Drew and Rob still need to see preseason production before buying the comeback.

Beckham said, “Most people don’t get a chance to double back.” His return has become a good story, but is he actually forcing the Giants to keep him?

Winston responded to two difficult practices by throwing six touchdowns. Hyatt and Gipson each caught two, while Smith-Schuster and Fidone also scored. The performance was not clean—Green intercepted Winston in the end zone—but it reinforced why backup-quarterback play matters after the Giants needed multiple quarterbacks last season.

Cambre continued his unexpected rise. The former undrafted receiver has repeatedly created separation, made difficult catches and contributed on special teams. Harbaugh said Cambre is “making a move,” giving the Giants another difficult decision in a crowded receiver competition.

Day 1 produced the stronger offensive performance. Jaxson Dart completed plenty of throws while adjusting to more work from under center, different footwork and new pocket landmarks. The operation looked encouraging, but several risky passes could have become interceptions if the defense had finished its opportunities.

Braxton Berrios became the surprise standout of the opening practice with five reported catches during team periods, including a long touchdown from Jameis Winston. Malachi Fields continued making contested catches, Chris Manhertz contributed more as a receiver than expected and Darius Slayton appeared to be moving well following offseason surgery.

Malik Nabers completed controlled individual work on consecutive days. His ability to run, cut and plant without an obvious setback is encouraging, but the Giants have not yet returned him to unrestricted competitive team periods.

Day 2 belonged to the defense. Carter repeatedly reached the backfield while working against Thomas, produced multiple would-be sacks and deflected a screen. The matchup becomes more meaningful because Carter was creating problems for the Giants’ best offensive lineman—not simply beating a reserve.

Kayvon Thibodeaux also answered the pressure surrounding the Giants’ crowded edge-rusher room. After batting down a pass during the opening practice, he intercepted Winston and returned it for a touchdown on Day 2.

Has John Harbaugh already changed the Giants’ standard?
The expectations sound different, but the real test is whether that urgency produces better execution and more wins once the games begin.

Harbaugh made the strongest statement of the Giants’ opening day at The Greenbrier when he said the team was not there simply to practice. Every drill, play call and practice period is supposed to prepare the Giants for the games they need to win. He praised the team’s focus, Jaxson Dart’s command of the offense and the work Malik Nabers has put into his recovery. However, Nabers remains on a gradual plan, and Harbaugh would not place a firm timeline on his return to full practices. 

Joe Schoen also acknowledged that Dart must learn another offense in his second season, even though continuity would have been preferable. We discuss whether Harbaugh’s experienced offensive staff can reduce that developmental cost and help Dart build on his rookie year.

Can the Giants replace Dexter Lawrence by committee?

Schoen admitted the timing of the Lawrence trade limited the available options because the main free-agent market had already passed. D.J. Reader, Shelby Harris, Darius Alexander and the inside linebackers will collectively be asked to replace his impact. Schoen also stopped well short of declaring the run defense fixed, answering that the Giants will have to see whether the new personnel and emphasis actually work. 

The roster remains unsettled. Schoen said the Giants will continue exploring trades, waiver claims and available veterans, with cornerback and wide receiver among the most important camp competitions.

Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster and Braxton Berrios are fighting for roles in a crowded receiver room. Schoen said Beckham can still get open and catch the football, while Harbaugh thought he looked good during the opening practice. None of the veteran receivers have been handed a roster spot.

John Harbaugh’s arrival and the organization’s new direction could help the pitch, but this remains a hypothetical debate—not a report that the Giants and Buccaneers have discussed a trade.

The Giants also announced a major expansion of their East Rutherford headquarters and training facility. The project includes approximately 93,500 square feet of new construction and 46,000 square feet of renovations, with completion expected before the 2028 season.

Drew and Rob react to the planned locker room, weight room, nutrition, recovery and rehabilitation upgrades while questioning how much the project reflects Harbaugh’s influence. McAlister’s final season at TCU, Moses’ ball production at SMU and Grimes’ former five-star pedigree provide upside, but each player would need to prove value on special teams or at the bottom of the depth chart. The size of the workout group also raises a broader question: Is the new Giants staff dissatisfied with the roster, or simply creating constant competition before training camp?

Two players earned contracts after the workout. Former second-round pick Marlon Davidson brings defensive-line versatility and previous experience with Dennard Wilson in Tennessee. His production has never matched his draft position, but familiarity with the scheme gives him a realistic chance to compete for rotational snaps.

Tyler Moore enters as a blocking-oriented tight end and H-back after limited receiving production at Iowa State. His path to the roster depends almost entirely on blocking, special teams and assignment reliability. Drew and Rob question whether Moore offers enough upside to beat out the other depth tight ends or whether he is more likely headed for the practice squad.

The episode closes with Wilson’s encouraging comments about Deonte Banks. Wilson said Banks had a “helluva offseason,” has been running toward coaching instead of away from it and appears to be in a better headspace.

Did Mathias Kiwanuka and Barry Cofield save the Giants’ 2006 draft class? No—the two defensive hits helped build championship teams, but they could not erase the lack of production from nearly every other selection.

Before revisiting the draft, Drew and Rob react to Thomas Fidone II, Sam Roberts and Roy Robertson-Harris opening training camp on the PUP list. Fidone is recovering from offseason foot surgery, Roberts underwent an undisclosed procedure, and Robertson-Harris continues working back from a torn Achilles. Which Giants starter is most vulnerable entering camp? The strongest immediate pressure falls on the CB2 group, where Colton Hood could push past Greg Newsome II and Deonte Banks, while Jon Runyan Jr. faces a legitimate challenge from Daniel Faalele at left guard.

Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy Jr. may be competing for the top spot on the depth chart, but the larger question is how John Harbaugh divides the workload. Skattebo’s physical running style could make him the early favorite, while Tracy gives the Giants a different weapon depending on the matchup.

Darnell Mooney enters as the favorite for WR2, but Darius Slayton and rookie Malachi Fields still create an interesting role debate. CB2 creates the boldest prediction of the episode. Drew expects Hood to win the job immediately, while Rob believes the rookie will eventually take it during the season. Newsome provides a veteran floor, but Banks enters a now-or-never camp after two disappointing seasons and questions about his effort and consistency.

Ar’Darius Washington could also create pressure inside if he stays healthy. His strong 2024 performance with Baltimore gives the Giants another versatile defensive back who can challenge Dru Phillips and compete for snaps at multiple positions.

At kicker, Dominic Zvada is the clear favorite unless he struggles during camp. Ben Sauls was perfect during his brief opportunity last season, but concerns about his kickoff ability and long-range leg could give Zvada the advantage. The Giants could also use punter Jordan Stout on kickoffs if Sauls proves to be the more dependable field-goal option.

The Giants gained several legitimate starters and one unforgettable Super Bowl moment from their 2008 draft class, but they sacrificed years of potential production when injuries repeatedly struck the group’s most promising players.

Kenny Phillips appeared to be developing into a high-level NFL safety before recurring knee problems changed his career. Terrell Thomas recorded 10 interceptions over two seasons before undergoing three ACL reconstructions on the same knee. Jonathan Goff became a full-time starter in 2010 before consecutive ACL tears ended his playing career.

Mario Manningham gave the class its lasting legacy. His 38-yard sideline reception from Eli Manning opened the game-winning drive in Super Bowl XLVI and remains one of the greatest catches in Giants history.
