みなさん こんにちは、かなこです。きょうの シャドーイングは「でした・じゃなかったです」。

Hi everyone, it’s Kanako. Today’s shadowing is「Past tense of です・じゃないです」. Before we’ve practiced “A is B” and “A is not B” sentence structures, today we are going to practice the past tense version of them. The past tense of “です” is “でした”, and the past tense of “じゃないです” is “じゃなかったです”. These conjugations only apply to nouns and なadjectives, and these do not apply to い adjectives.

I was a good student.　 私は いい学生でした。

I wasn’t a good student.　 私は いい学生じゃなかったです。

My grandma was a teacher.　おばあちゃんは 先生でした。

My grandpa wasn’t a teacher.　 おじいちゃんは 先生じゃなかったです。

I was an office worker.　 私は 会社員でした。

My sister wasn’t an office worker.　 妹は 会社員じゃなかったです。

That person wasn’t an international student.　 あの人は 留学生じゃなかったです。

It wasn’t a Japanese movie.　 日本の映画じゃなかったです。

It was a Korean movie.　 韓国の映画でした。

It wasn’t a Japanese song.　 日本の歌じゃなかったです。

It was a Chinese song.　 中国の歌でした。

It was nice weather on weekends.　 週末 いい天気でした。

It wasn’t nice weather today.　 今日 いい天気じゃなかったです。

It was cloudy yesterday.　 昨日 くもりでした。

It was snowy today.　 今日 雪でした。
