Fayetteville city councilwoman Courtney Banks-Mclaughlin turns her daughter’s tragic death into an endowment to help other. Investigators say 15-year-old Coryonna Young was shot and killed by another teen on Maitland Drive in October of 2022. 

In May of 2023… the city councilwoman told me she didn’t want to let her daughter’s death be in vain. So… this week… she established a memorial endowment through the Cumberland Community Foundation. Banks-McLaughlin serves on the Governor's Crime Commission task force while advocating against ghost guns… the type of weapon that was used to kill her daughter.

Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin says the City of Fayetteville will share 50% of sales tax revenue beyond fiscal year 2022 amounts under a new revenue sharing agreement with Cumberland County. The Fayetteville City Council approved the agreement Monday at its meeting. The agreement is expected to generate an additional $2.5 million to $3 million for the city in the upcoming fiscal year

BRENDA MCNAIR, Fayetteville Council Member District and  in her second term representing District 7. She has been a long-time resident of Fayetteville and a local small business owner for over 35 years. Although registered as a Democrat, McNair firmly states she is not tied to any political party or particular interest. She believes the Fayetteville City Council is nonpartisan for good reasons. She also believes Fayetteville deserves unbiased leadership and elected officials who will represent all the residents.

On August 20, 2019, I had breakfast with Ron Ross, the Executive Director of Boys and Girls Club of Lumberton.  As I listened to Ron tell countless stories, my mind wandered just a bit.  Not because of boredom.  But, rather, I found myself asking why I waited so long to follow-through on the idea of Good News from a Good Neighbor.  Ross has been, and continues to be an incredible asset to our town, to the organization he represents, and to the children and their families he works with daily. Ron Ross Boys and Girls Club”. One day, he was picked up by a person who introduced himself as the director of the Boys Club (it wasn’t called Boys AND Girls Club until 1990) and offered him a part-time job.  The appeal of working shorter hours and ONLY having to walk 2 miles home was too much to pass up.  And so, in a serendipitous moment, Ron Ross’ dedication to the Boys and Girls Club began.
