In episode four of season two of The Nature of Invisible Things (TNIT), I am pleased to welcome back Samar Jade, my first guest when the podcast launched in January earlier this year. After a brief update on the astrology of the moment, we quickly moved into the subject matter at hand — the subversive and sensual joy of having a fat body. While the focus is sharing our experiences of moving through a change in the acceptance of our fat bodies, this episode has many provocative moments for ALL body types.
Join us as we discuss what it feels like to fully inhabit and accept one’s body after being at war with it for a long time and the overindulgence of being both joyful and fat simultaneously. In addition, Samar shares the work of Sabrina Strings, which connects fat phobia in the United States to white supremacy.
We reflect on where our body shame started, our first taste of diet culture, and discuss the connection between desire, distortion, and the commodification of our shame. Bodies are personal, and yet our culture feels entitled to comment on and objectify them. Tune in and hear about our experiences of both joy and pleasure in our fat bodies.
Welcome back, Samar!
