# 215: How To Avoid Being Overlooked For Great Opportunities

Listen Later

[Visibility Series - Part 2]

In today's episode I talk about how to avoid being overlooked for great career advancing opportunities.

I see it time and time again amongst the women that I coach and the clients that I work with - one of the biggest reasons why they feel frustrated in the roles that they’re in right now and want to move to different roles or organisations is because they feel overlooked and undervalued.

Because they feel overlooked and undervalued they feel that the organisation doesn’t value them so they go and look for another role elsewhere.

They may be working in a team where other people are taking credit for their ideas or for their work. They might be experiencing other people who have been in the organisation for a lesser amount of time and they are being promoted above them.

All these experiences can cause them to think that they’re not valued enough and so they need to move on.

If you know you're doing a good job, you know that you’re showing up, you’re adding value but the organisation or your team members are not acknowledging it, it's partly their fault but it's not all their fault - it's partly your fault.

It's your responsibility to make sure that the contribution you are making is noticed, in the way that you want it to be noticed. You’re the only person who knows what is happening behind closed office doors. You’re the only person who knows the amount of time that you're putting in and the amount of effort.

Here’s the thing, when people are feeling overlooked and undervalued they want to jump ship, but what we don’t want to happen is that you move to a new environment and you experience the same thing. Because it's not just about the environment - you have a part to play.

If you're not practising stepping out of your comfort zone, if you're not practising going out, reaching out and speaking to the people you know you want to connect with because you know that relationship could help move the needle for you... you're not going to get better at it. If you are being overlooked for opportunities, there is a different way that you could be going about positioning yourself.

What you may learn:

The importance of being intentiona
l - It’s so important to be intentional about what it is you are sharing and where you are sharing it. We need to share the right amount with the right people and in the right environments if you want to make opportunities for yourself.

Taking ownership for yourself - Only you have the tools to move and drive your career forward.  Stepping out of your comfort zone and speaking in a group setting or sharing your work experience is so important.

Being strategic - Research the organisation’s goals, show how you support the organisation with achieving their goals in order for other people to see the value that you bring.
