#275 Holy Habits: Disciplemaking

Listen Later

The current spiritual state of America can be described in one word: malaise. Fewer people are attending church, and the COVID pandemic seemed to simply expose rather than cause an antipathy toward the things of God. Though there are a number of complex societal developments impacting the church, what if the cause and, therefore, the solution to this apathy was was something simple (though not easy)? In sports, during a scoring drought or in a high-pressure situation, our coach always told us the same thing. Get back to the fundamentals. So, what if the church refocused its efforts on–I don’t know–the Great Commission and the task of making disciples that make disciples. Here is a sermon on why this is important now and how it directly affects Christian citizenship.

  • Christ’s method: If you had unlimited power and resources, how would you change the world? If your goal is to make an impact that would last centuries across all ethnic and national boundaries, what would you do? Would you start a YouTube channel, launch a podcast, take out an ad on television or social media, or attempt to start a tech company like Google or Apple? These would all make sense, especially if you were trying to disseminate information. But Jesus of Nazareth, God in the flesh, was not in the information business. He was concerned about transformation, and he focused much of his brief time on this planet With the ragtag set of fishermen, tax collectors, and even a traitor. Yet, his words and his impact still touch billions each week and serve as the world’s first truly global faith. It turns out (if you want to create significant change), you should speak to the world but focus on a few. If you want to change the world for eternity, you must make disciples.
