The El Paso airport was shut down late Tuesday night after the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) fired an anti-drone laser at an object flying near the border. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ordered all flights grounded and closed the airspace up to eighteen thousand feet for a period of ten days in response. Or at least that was the plan until the FAA reversed course eight hours later and reopened everything. While the airport shutdown is unlikely to happen again and appears to have been more due to petty squabbling than a genuine threat, it would be a mistake to write the event off as inconsequential. The same is true of our pride when the Lord holds us accountable for our own shortcomings.

The American alpine ski racer Lindsey Vonn has been one of the most compelling stories at the Winter Olympics. A week before competition began, she tore her left ACL during training. Savannah Guthrie has withdrawn from hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony to focus on her family. As you know, her mother, Nancy Guthrie, has disappeared in Tucson; police believe she was taken against her will in a “possible kidnapping or abduction.” Ms. Guthrie’s disappearance is tragically not unusual in the US. In addition to abductions, elder fraud and abuse are epidemics, as hundreds of thousands of adults over the age of sixty are abused, neglected, or financially exploited each year. It’s been said that the way we treat people is the true measure of our character. As we’ll see today, this is both bad news and good news. The choice is ours.

For those who are ready for winter to be over, the bad news is that Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday, predicting six more weeks of polar vortexes and misery for millions. He’s not, however, the only forecaster in the news today. The National Center for Health Statistics is reporting that US life expectancy has hit an all-time high. According to “Vitalists”, humanity has an “incredible moral duty” to “extend lifespan indefinitely.” While they admit that there is no current way to make death obsolete, that’s their goal. Here’s my confession: part of me wishes they had already succeeded.
