In this deeply personal episode of Two Sisters of a Certain Age: Conversations with a Therapist, hosts Judy Grant, LMFT and Dr. Sophia Grant sit down with actress and producer Dalila Ali Rajah (Cherry Bomb) to talk about raising her non-binary, transgender son, Phoenix.

Dalila shares the moment she found out her child was struggling, the grief and fear that came with an unexpected journey, and how she and her family learned to affirm Phoenix's identity — even when it meant navigating hostile school administrators, a resistant co-parent, and her own uncertainty. She opens up about therapy, gender-affirming care decisions at UCLA's Gender Health Program, finding community through support groups, and watching her son go on to thrive at Howard University.

Together, the hosts and their guest dig into the real differences between sexuality, gender identity, and gender expression, the disproportionate danger facing Black transgender women, and why unconditional love — not understanding — is what protects our kids.
