  • 3' grezzi Ep. 690 Sarda? Chi, io?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

What does it mean for me to be Sardinian and to consider myself Italian? Good question. It is a difficult thing to describe because it is something that changes depending on where I am living. When I was abroad I felt very Sardinian and claimed my origin from the island of Sardinia. When I was very young and living in Sardinia, before my many migrations, the Sardinian identity was very tight for me because it was entangled with everything that prevented me from living the life I wanted to live, we are talking about the 1980s, and being a young girl with strange ideas in her head in the 1980s in Cagliari was not very easy, so much so that it was easier for me to leave Italy than to leave Sardinia.

Yes, it is a strange thing that of identity, because for example, when I was abroad and saw a Sardinian surname , I couldn't help but ... my antennae would be raised, I was at least curious, or at least the thought would come to me , this is a Sardinian person. I don't know if the same thing happens with people from other Italian regions. I don't know, when a Neapolitan sees a typical Neapolitan surname, but then if there is such a thing, why has our insularity also led us to keep our surnames among ourselves?

Why am I giving this speech? I don't know, because these days there is a lot of talk about identity, because these days Sardinia is preparing for the regional elections that then will have to decide our fate for the next four years, even for those who don't care about politics, if you don't care about politics politics politics cares about you because it is politics that then makes all the services that we use work , or doesn't work. The being inhabitants of this wonderful island, the flamingos, the sea, the beach, the sun, everything you want, but then we find ourselves cut off from a lot of other circuits and unfortunately even if you go to the Archaeological Museum in Cagliari , which is very comprehensive to the whole history of Sardinia, however Sardinia is always presented as the one that was occupied, there is no real history of Sardinia where we are protagonists because we protagonists were , I say we even if I was not there, there is also this other thing here , it is not that because in Sardinia there were nuraghi that I am particularly boh , I don't know a warrior or what do I know .

No however talking about the past is important to understand certain mechanisms and in fact there are a lot of people who talk about Sardinia who however have not studied history and always talk about it in terms of a colony.

Here, let's not let Sardinia stay anymore, be a colony, self-determine, right?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

You know when you want to do something on the Internet and a screen pops up asking you 'show me that you are not a robot' and you have to click a little square.

I every time I found it, I always wondered but excuse me, artificial intelligence now can do incredible things, you know it too, both from the point of view of drawings, videos not to mention text generation, and you want to tell me that something so refined, so powerful is not able to make a twitch, to put a click on a square?

So it's always been a fairly arcane thing that I couldn't explain, and now I've finally found out what it is, and it's actually something that distinguishes human beings from computers.
When they ask us to click on a square, they don't give a damn whether we click on the square or not because click would know how to do it, not only that, but the computer would do it in a very, very precise way, that is, with a perfect straight line from where the cursor is to the square. Here, this is something we human beings do not know how to do.

So when they ask us to click to prove we are human, they don't give a damn whether or not they see the click on the little square, they care about the system seeing the path, the movement that our mouse makes, that is the cursor inside the screen. Why? And hold on tight and tight, when we are browsing automatically we are giving permission to... IDK to the Internet to control, to manage, to collect, to store not only the sites that we visit in the in the history of our browser, but also all the movements that we make with our cursor, and while the computer goes in a precise way in a direct and perfect, straight line from where the little square is, a human being will never be able to do that, so you can tell that it's a human being and not a robot because you see all the squiggles, the movements of the mouse all the way down to the little square.

So I have revealed a mystery to you, and the computer that tries to imitate us can never be as imperfect as we are, until they create programs that generate random mouse movements, and then I don't know, they will ask us for one of our hair that will be analysed in real time to see whether it is human beings or computers.

Think about it the next time you move the mouse: you are being spied on.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

The Bechdel test makes us realize how important the female figure is within a movie and, I didn't know, I found out today, it comes from a comic book, a comic book that was made where two women talk and one says to the other, "No, look, I only come to the movies if the movie has more than two female characters, if the female characters talk to each other and if these two female characters don't talk about men or at least not only about men."

These are the three characteristics to see if a film passes the so-called Bechdel test. So next time you watch a movie at home, at the cinema or even a TV series watch a little bit, how many female characters are there? Observe whether they are characters who also have phrases to speak or whether they are simply there to make themselves look good, and even if these characters speak, be careful to see what kind of dialogues they have, whether they talk only about men or whether they talk about external things as well, not only about their femininity, but also about practical things and what they can do, technical things, their work, their skills, their specialties.

The Bechdel test, there are sites that analyze a lot of movies that to see whether or not they meet these to these criteria that I repeat are very easy to adapt, however this Bechdel test can also be applied to video games, because more and more even in video games the female figures are either not there at all , or if they do exist they have ancillary , secondary roles and in any case they are not roles that give much importance to the game.

I know there are exceptions, I say in principle the majority of games. Not only that, but some research has been done, you know in video games today there is a lot of dialogue, almost as much as in a book, almost as much as in a movie, and once you have dialogue with some characters, they generate others create, there are real let's say trees , branches of dialogue, and they did this research and found that if you talk only with male characters you win the game much sooner and with a much higher score, if on the other hand in games that have both male and female characters talking, talking only and exclusively with female characters, you end up later and with a much lower score, so it entices the people who play the game to interject only with male characters.

Here, this is a message to those who listen to me and who make video games. Give us interesting and game-winning female characters.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Ci sentiremo ancora.

    TRANSLATION

Today we conclude a cycle that began on January 1 with a gift. Today, December 31, I want to conclude with another gift, conclude in the sense that the 3-minute podcast, as you may have noticed, is no longer daily, but I do it when I have something to say.

So what gift do I want to give you today? It is the gift of the Moscow Rules, and you will wonder, what are these Moscow Rules? Surely you are familiar with them, because if you have ever watched a spy movie, or read a spy book, surely they talked about, or at least applied the Moscow Rules, which are the rules you have to follow to become a spy who does not get caught.

There are ten of them, they have been codified, but it's not that they exist like that, in short they have been codified and I'll tell you about them and then make use of them as you wish, because then, applying the Moscow Rules, you can also feel like characters in a novel, adventurous spies even when you go to the supermarket to do your shopping.

Then rule number one says never take anything for granted, and this seems to me to be a rule that can be safely applied in our lives as well. Then, never go against your instinct, when you feel a thing in your gut stomach, that says "mmm... this thing is a little..." That's it, follow your gut.

Number three is that everyone is potentially controlled by your enemy. This means to tread lightly, to tread carefully, to never overextend yourself, to not tell things you should not tell.
Another rule, do not look over your shoulder, because looking over your shoulder means thinking you are being followed. And this rule says don't look over your shoulder because you are never completely alone or lonely, there is always someone watching you. So the triumph of total paranoia that everybody is watching you, everybody is spying on you.

Rule number, five go with the flow and blend in, be inconspicuous, and confuse everyone in the crowd.

Rule number six, always vary the things you do and don't do the same things too often, so be a little unpredictable.

Number seven, make your enemy think he can be comfortable, thus giving him a false sense of security.

Number eight, don't pick on your enemy, because you must always respect him. Number nine, you choose the time, time, and place to act, and number ten always keep your options all open.

I will add a caveat that these that I read to you are the Moscow rules in English, on Wikipedia, and there are four other languages; Chinese, Russian, French, and Lombard. I will leave you to think I don't know if there is anything to think about. We will be in touch again.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 686 Lettere mancanti

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

There is an old movie from the 1980s, from the late 1980s called 'Dead Letter Office'. A movie that I saw, a really teeny weeny movie, which I don't know if it had a distribution outside Australia, an Australian movie with by the way Miranda Otto who is a very good Australian artist.
Why am I telling you about this anyway? Because it tells the story of this girl who works in a very particular post office where letters that had no addressee, that failed to reach their destination, I seem to remember. Anyway, I've always been impressed with this thing here of the post office of dead letters, also because I really like writing letters, when I was traveling around the world and didn't have a fixed abode, I would get letters at the Poste Restante, I mean, I really like this whole post office situation. Well, today, thanks to the daily newsletter, Stefano Mirti's Letterine, I found out that there is a small island in Japan, a small island called Awashima, where there is a small post office where letters arrive that never reached their destination. I didn't quite understand if they come from all over the world, only from Japan, I think from all over the world, and I went to look it up then on Wikipedia and I found it, the Missing Post Office, the post office of the missing things , it's a small building where just there is this post office where letters come in that are not delivered that are not advisable because they have a misspelled address or they totally lack an address or you can't trace the recipient .
It's a very romantic thing if you think about it, to try to still give importance and prominence to keep somewhere these letters that didn't get through, this communication that didn't happen and that brings me , it makes me remember always on the subject of Japan a movie , I should go and look a little bit to retrieve the title, a wonderful movie where among other things it talks about a phone booth where people would go and call loved ones who were gone, they didn't make real phone calls, they just picked up the receiver and talked, so they vented. And I found out that this phone booth actually exists in a park and that people actually go there to talk to those who are no longer there. I had also tried to put it on the itinerary on my last trip to Japan, however, it was really out of the picture, and that will be perhaps a reason to go back to Japan, to go and see a little bit of this phone booth for people who are no longer there and maybe even go to the post office for letters from people who never got their letters.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Vi amo sempre comunque tantissimo e fatevi sentire, dài.

    TRANSLATION
After spending quite a bit of time wondering, but what do I do with these 3 raw minutes? Do I continue next year? Do I stop, and if I continue, in what form? How often? Then one day I said to myself, but I can also stop when I want and then resume when I have something to say.
In fact, in the last few days I have not posted any new episodes of the raw 3 minutes , no one has complained and no one has even noticed. And that's perfectly fine, because , even though I am aware of these psychological things that happen to us that when we have a stain on our shirt we think everyone is staring at the stain and instead no one even noticed it, we are so fixated on our things that we think that our things, so ourselves, are at the center of the universe of the world around us, which rightly doesn't give a damn about us and everything else, because we are little worlds, all focused on ourselves and ourselves (it's kind of a pain in the ass this Italian language thing that everything has to be masculine and feminine when you want to be inclusive you have to repeat masculine and feminine. However, I will close the parenthesis here). Yes, I have decided that I will do the 3 minutes when I have something to say.
Today the thing I had to say was just this about how even though he is a person who reads a lot, he listens to a lot of podcasts that talk about psychological things, by the way my son is doing a course of study very focused on psychology and how people see themselves and user etcetera, I sometimes peek through his books or listen to him repeating when he is here at home for the vacations, so I also take extremely technical things, for example now I heard that he was studying this thing about neurons, you know of neurons we have boh, I think 85 million or billion, anyway so many, and not only scientists detect neurons but they can even see inside the neurons these little discharges. But how on earth can they see the electrical discharges inside the neurons? Anyway, closed the other parenthesis, this is to tell you that yes, I will take a new rhythm and instead of running and jumping as I did during several trips to France, Germany and Japan this year that I really had to go over the top out of breath to be able to publish every day, despite everything, rain, fog, mud and whatnot, lack of internet, that was usually the problem, I still managed to publish every day, punctual as clockwork, punctual as the rooster that wakes you up in the morning, my 3 raw minutes.
Now sigh of relief, I will post them when I have something to say. That was the thing I had to say to you today. I always love you anyway so much and let me hear from you, come on.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I happened to receive an invitation yesterday to attend a conference, a meeting where they were talking about the future of certain entities in my region. I read the flyer and noticed that among the speakers there were eight men and only one woman. I usually trash it immediately, however, I don't know, it came to me, so I responded to the email and said no, look, when events have eight male speakers and one woman, I don't attend, because I'm not interested in them.

And so far nothing, nothing unusual, unfortunately. The thing that amazed me was that the person who organised, or who sent me this invitation, responded and explained to me that this imbalance was because one speaker was unavailable, another female speaker did not want to attend, this and that, there were some people who they had to invite, and then concluded by saying, it did not seem appropriate to pressure these people who were invited to send speakers to ask that they be women. And I responded, oh well, no the pressures need to be done because until those pressures are done, it is our responsibility when we organise something, anything, to pressure so that there is a balance of gender representation, and mind you, gender representation is just one of the many balances that should be had because there are not only genders, there are also other categories that should be allowed to express an opinion themselves.

And so I said no, you do have to interfere because otherwise the culture will never change. And I sent the email and I was surprised to see that this person once again replied this person was also very hurt, this person was also feeling, yes not too happy with the (un)balance, however, they felt maybe not empowered to make certain decisions, so they sent me the details of another event that they organised some time ago about gender equality and so on, so this person wanted to put their mind at rest a little bit, they wanted to say I'm not a person who doesn't think about these things, I think about them very much.

Here, I invite all the people who are involved in organising meetings, there, do interfere, ask, demand that there be at least gender equality, if not other kinds of equality when you organise a meeting, and if they tell you no, we only have one male to send to attend, you say whatever, we will go to some other organisation until you have given women a chance to have their say as well. All right? Let's do this, come on.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Oggi però voglio parlarne in parte perché... Perché no?

    TRANSLATION

In this 3-minute podcast I usually don't talk about current events except for the things that happen to me day to day, but I never talk about politics or other big issues.
Today, however, I want to talk about it in part because... Why not? It's my podcast and I do what I want with it, there are no written rules, and then because this thing I want to talk about also has a more general let's say more general impact and it comes to me from inside from very far away, and precisely from when I was still an expat, and yes I keep talking about when I was an expat because those were the formative years of my life and because I spent more time outside of Italy, outside of Sardinia, certainly more outside than inside in my whole life, and I want to talk about a moment, in 2004, when my pride as a Sardinian had an incredible blow with the election of Renato Soru as President of the Region.

As I said, I was abroad and I was abroad for quite a while already, so I was very little interested in Italian politics and even less interested in regional politics, also because it made me very sad and I don't deal with the things that I can't change, at that time I think you still couldn't even vote while abroad, anyway I wasn't involved in regional politics, however when Renato Soru was elected as president of the Sardinian region, now I'm just throwing it out there, I felt a little bit like when they elected Obama, that you were proud to be an American, I'm not American but I'm Sardinian, however I don't know, he was a character who had struck my imagination very much, in a positive way, because he was a person first of all who was not vulgar, and in those years the absolute vulgarity was just beginning, it was creeping not only on television but it had already cleared customs in politics, in everyday life, and he instead had this aspect, he still has this incredibly serious, calm aspect, he doesn't shout, and then I started to follow a little bit the regional politics and I had seen that he had done some things that nobody before him had dared to do, so he made a very good impression on me.
Then whatever, I've heard all possible things about him, I don't know him personally, so I'm only speaking from hearsay, however, I must say that now that he has put himself in coalition with the other group that inside my heart Sardinia Calls Sardinia to stand in the next regional elections, my vote is assured.

I usually go to vote holding my nose, this time I will go to vote with a heart swollen with pride and vote for Soru. Whatever, allow me this little outburst, this little theatre, because it is not often that I get to go to the polls without having to hold my nose, indeed, with someone I believe in and who truly gives me confidence for the future.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 682 Per Angela
L'arrivo di una nuova ascoltatrice (dichiarata!) è motivo di celebrazione.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

This 3-minute podcast episode is dedicated to Angela. Who is Angela? She is a new listener of mine and I am especially happy because it's not every day that I have new listeners, declared listeners and Angela instead declared herself because she sent me a message on YouTube where she told me that she discovered the 3-minute podcast and now she is going to start listening.

Thank you Angela, I'm very glad you discovered me, I took advantage of that because, it's not every day that you have messages sent by listeners, and, she explained, I asked but how did you find me? And she explained that I appeared among the various suggestions that come on YouTube, because, for those who don't know this podcast is also posted on YouTube in the original version, then in English subtitled version.

It's going to sound tender and ridiculous this my, this great excitement of mine at discovering a new listener, however think that this is a tiny podcast, small are the 3 minutes I use to talk, small is the space it takes, although, Angela it's not a new podcast, this is the second year, this in fact is episode six hundred I don't remember what anymore, so if you feel like going to listen also a little bit of the catalog of the past episodes and, Angela, I also have to tell you that just in these days I was reflecting on the fact, shall I continue/shall I not precisely because this is the second year and I don't know if this podcast, if the 3 minutes will continue after December 31.

Thank you for what you tell me. You say there is a need for daily topics the way I talk about them, I'm very pleased of course, and again, I haven't decided yet, but more no than yes, I don't think I will continue after December 31.

But I repeat, there are more than two days in a row that you can listen to, more than 48 hours of recorded in the 3-minute podcast, so if you want, you can fill up days listening to the catalog of previous episodes. For the rest, I repeat, it may seem, how shall I say, a bit pathetic however, let's say, sweet this great enthusiasm of mine however it does not happen to me every day, unfortunately, indeed I invite you to send me messages because I speak, I throw my words into the ether of the podcast, however I do not know who listens to them, if anyone listens to them.
This is what I wanted to communicate to you now, and as I said, this episode is dedicated to you Angela.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Some films age well, you can watch them again five, 10, 20, or 30 years later, and they always work beautifully. I not so long ago rewatched for the umpteenth time Jesus Christ Superstar, one of my favourite musical comedies, and it always works for me.

Yesterday I made the mistake of re-watching the movie, which is a kind of Christmas classic that the English title I think is also the same in Italian 'Love Actually'. I would have preferred not to watch it because the first time I saw it when it came out, I didn't go to see it in a movie theatre, I didn't go to see it in a movie theatre, but I probably rented it when there were still places where you went to rent movies.

Anyway, I had a fairly positive memory of Love Actually, I'm not saying it was my favourite movie, however, I remembered seeing it and I remembered that it left me with a good feeling. So, last night, I had some time to spare and I said but yeah, come on, let's watch this romantic comedy that even fits with the pre-Christmas season. Never had I done that! Let's say I forced myself to watch it to the end to see how far it went.

It's full of bad jokes and body shaming, so, this one is fat, have you seen how fat this one is, really hallucinating stuff. But I was there watching, and the most hallucinating thing is that I couldn't understand how all these bad jokes, which are just a part of the negative things in the movie, then there are others as well, like I didn't notice in 2003, when I first saw it, I was really shocked.

But were we really like that? We didn't realise how inappropriate, improper, and offensive all these jokes were!

Then whatever, even the stories of the different characters, I can't remember how many couples, all heterosexual, of course, how bad they were. The guy who falls in love with the wife, the best friend's wife, they just got married, he goes behind the friend's back after they get married he says, Ah, but you are my love... Are you kidding me? That is, are we adults? Or, all female figures are walking sex organs because they do not have any kind of conversation except talking about men and their loves, they accept everything that husbands, and partners do without questioning anything. Males come out very bad It is a bad movie, but it is a terrible movie. It is truly a film... And I repeat, I was shocked as I didn't notice in 2003. Help! But I was a monster, I was a monster. Whatever, it's a bad movie anyway, so don't watch it except to criticise it.
