  • 3' grezzi Ep. 670 Calendari australiani

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION
I don't know if I have already told you about my calendar, but in case I will tell you about it again, because every time I receive the calendar it is a great joy, and today I received my calendar.

What is it all about? It's a calendar that came from Australia and I started using it, let me think about it a little bit, my son wasn't even born yet, so we're talking about more than 20 years ago.

What is so special about the calendar? It is the calendar that is produced every year by the Australian Meteorological Institute, and it is a very large calendar, with beautiful photographs depicting various parts of Australia with various weather phenomena, so you can well imagine these beautiful, deep, craamazing, colorful Australian skies, swirls of winds, snow, yes, there is also snow in Australia.

Why do I like it so much? Because in the part where there are the days of the months it has quite big squares that allow me to write, to use practically as a family agenda, when there is something, appointments, doctors, visits, friends coming for dinner, us going somewhere, or I buy theater tickets, I write it in the calendar so I have it in front of my eyes and also the other people who go around my house have it in front of their eyes, then of course I have on my table my calendar where I write things down, I also rewrite the things already written down in the big calendar in the kitchen, and I also rewrite them in the electronic calendar that at the same time I have both on my phone and on my computer, because that way I have it in several places and where I cast my eye, I see that I have that appointment.

The nice thing about this calendar is that it's a connection I have with Australia and also with my friends in Australia because the very first Weather Institute calendar was given to me by my friend Kathleen. At that time we used to see each other a lot, but most importantly, before the Christmas vacations we would all meet and exchange gifts, even small things, also because many of us were still students, so it's not like we had a lot of money, however there was always the enjoyment of exchanging gifts, and I remember Kathleen gave me, she, this beautiful calendar and ever since then I went looking for it and every year I order it, I order it well in advance, because indeed, this time I'm very surprised that it came after a few weeks that I ordered it because I usually order it in November and it comes to me at the beginning of January, so happy and glad, now I've hung it up because it comes to me in the roll, so it unrolls, from here to January it will be flat and ready for use to write my things on it.

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

Some time ago I was asked to describe, to give a definition of game. I thought about it. It is not an easy thing, something that is difficult to describe in objective terms, that can only be described by telling, or at least I found myself describing it by telling how I feel when I play.
I started by saying that for me a game is something that I do voluntarily, it's something that I don't have to do, it's something that I do voluntarily and it gives me pleasure in doing it.
But this does not only describe a game, it also describes many other things, for example going for a walk, petting my cat.
The game has an element of difficulty and challenge because we can only define game something that requires our attention and a certain degree of skill in doing it. It is something that you have to be able to do, and when you succeed it gives a sense of satisfaction, for the fact that you have succeeded.
I don't know if that describes the concept of the game well. I'm still thinking about it as I'm talking and as always when it comes to this 3 minutes podcast, I don't prepare anything, so I didn't go looking for game definitions, really I'm going so off the cuff and wondering: what's the difference between playing Monopoly, which is a game that I don't like by the way, why I don't like Monopoly? Because as a child I used to play and I was always sad, I was sad when I lost because I lost, I was sad when I won because I was sorry that other people lost, so it's not a game for me, just as it's not a game for me Risk was never my thing.
So I was saying yes, what is the difference between playing Monopoly and petting my cat? It's just that playing Monopoly I don't know how it's going to end, oh well, also while petting my cat I don't know how it's going to end because it might get up and it might scratch me, so maybe that's not a fair definition, although I feel that the element of being unknown, of mystery, let's say, is something inherent in a game.
I don't know. I am thinking about other elements that can characterise a game and a possible definition. There's the satisfaction of doing it, that certain level of skill, and then the fact that the doctor didn't prescribe me to paly, even though doctors should actually prescribe games because playing is good for you, I'm convinced of it, I don't have proof, but I'm convinced of it.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

Io ci sto, eh. Io sottoscrivo e appoggio al 100%.

    TRANSLATION

When I was a young woman in the early 1980s, there was a lot of talk about feminism. There were rallies and slogans were chanted. When I was a young woman in the early 1980s, my town, Cagliari, which is a medium-sized provincial town, had counselling centres. And the counselling centres, it's a little bit sad also to have to explain this, were those places where we young women could go to talk about family planning, about how to avoid getting pregnant when having sex, but also to talk about sexually transmitted diseases, and there were people there, women, who listened and who had experience and who therefore gave us advice.
The counselling centre was also the place where you went when you got pregnant and wanted an abortion, because when I was a young woman, abortion was a guaranteed right, free, no questions asked even if you were underage, and I remember accompanying more than one of my schoolmates to the counselling centre because she had to have an abortion. And, it's the things of life, it's useless to pretend that we don't know what was happening because it was happening when I was a young woman and it's happening now, the difference now that is there are no more counselling centres, so a girl of 14, 15 years old who is in this situation is forced to go to the family doctor, maybe she doesn't feel like going to tell the family doctor, and then in Italy there is this situation that you may be aware of that there are doctors who say, no I don't do abortion because I'm against it I'm... Whatever, they are...
I don't want to talk about that! I want to talk about the rallies that I used to attend when I was a young woman, and it was very nice to attend the rallies, the feminist ones, you would shout the slogans, and there was one that particularly stuck with me and I particularly liked it and it was, "Tremble, tremble, the witches are back," and that's the same slogan that I heard shouted yesterday at the November 25 rally, which I very, very, very gladly attended and I was immensely pleased to see a lot of young women and a lot of young men attending. The difference is that when I was a young woman the slogan said "Tremble, tremble, the witches are back, but this time they are armed."
Eh, we were a little more aggressive. It didn't bring us anything, because we took huge steps backwards from when I was a young woman. I am guilty first of all because I left, so I did not defend our rights. This got me thinking, though. Maybe these new women and men will find a better way to assert their rights. I'm all for it, eh. I subscribe and support 100%.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 694 Video nero senza audio

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

If you are listening to this 3-minute podcast, it means that you are connected to the Internet and therefore you also know that the Internet is full of things that we don't need, that we don't do anything with.

Well, I'm here to help you, not so much with my measly 3 minutes, during which I actually talk, but by introducing you to a video where absolutely nothing happens, it's a completely black video, you can find it on YouTube, it's a black video with no sound where nothing happens.
And you may ask: but what do I do with a black video with no sound where nothing happens? Might as well keep the computer off! And no, that's where you're wrong, because these hours, because these are very long videos 24 hours, 48 hours and even longer, these are videos that are going mainstream, of course they have their own niche audience, and they have millions of people subscribing to this channel and watching the videos, now the last time I watched it, wait a little while I open it up, the one with 24 hours of completely black video, I repeat, no sound, no nothing, even in high definition, I have no idea what the difference is between high definition and non-high definition in a video of completely black things with no sound, it had 47 million views.

I went looking for articles a bit to understand what it is about these videos that's fascinating, where there's just the black screen and nothing happens, there's not even audio. So, there are some people who use it, and it is also a clever way, to keep the computer on while they are downloading games from the computer. It must have happened to you too: you have something downloaded for which it takes a long, long, long time, then you forget about it and you have the computer set up that automatically shuts down after a certain number of minutes when nothing happens and so you also lose what you are downloading. Instead, by running this video where nothing happens there is no audio, I repeat, which lasts more than a day, you start downloading the program or the game, what you are downloading, before you go to bed and in the morning the computer is still on.

Other people I read that they use it because they want to maybe listen to podcasts, however, they don't want to have light in the room because they want to sleep. But I say, there is also a setting, at least in my computer there is a setting that I can take the brightness off the screen. Who am I to tell people what to do anyway? I shall put up the link and enjoy your viewing.

    TRASCRIZIONE [English translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I am always very sensitive to access issues, whether it is a staircase that makes access impossible for a person who has walking problems or a site that presents information in a way that is difficult for people to reach what they want to read.

By the way, usability is also a subject that I taught for a while, so, it is really close to my heart, because to create a site that has a tangled architecture and makes the user feel lost is to deprive them of the right to access information.

I happen, unfortunately often, to see sites that just have either an impossible to navigate architecture where they use i.e. different terms to mean the same thing or they have twenty thousand submenus that if you don't know exactly what you're looking for, and -- let's face it -- we often don't know what we're looking for, we have a vague idea of what we're looking for, but then we wait until we find it to say ah here it is, this is what I was looking for.
Anyway, I happened just today to access a site, the site of an event that is in town these days, a festival that has several events, and because it is an event that interests me, I wanted to see what the calendar offered today, so I was out of the house, I entered the site of this festival using my cell phone and then I searched, of course, 'program'. I clicked on a nice big button that reads 'program ' (nice! let's click!) and another screen pops up where there is another button that, just as nice big, reads 'download pdf'.

And I already kind of frozen, what do you mean pdf? How can I manage on my cell phone, which by the way is a very small cell phone because I chose it on purpose small because it had to fit in the pocket of my pants and I have small hands, what do I do with a gigantic phone if my hand is small? So already, terrified, I opened the pdf, and it is a 60-page document.

Now there is no point in saying the name of the festival, who cares, I just want to say: when you propose a program, really the 60-page PDF, whatever the problem is, whatever the other options are, it is definitely the worst option. Use drop-down menus, use other methods to communicate the program to people who want to participate.

Now whatever, I'm at home, I'm going to open it from my big computer, with the big screen, download the 60 pages of pdf and well, I'm going to look at what's at the event today which again, is an event that I'm interested in, so, I'm going to take that extra step.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 692 Sarà mica un killer?
Traffici internazionali, sicari d'oltremare e misteriosi pagamenti. C'è tutto!

    TRASCRIZIONE [Eng translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I have to tell you a funny thing that happened. So, while I was on vacation, as you already know, to take care of my two cats Sputnik and Mazinga, a friend of mine came from London.
Now, while I was away Mazinga had a urinary tract problem, so my friend picked her up and took her to the vet. Then, as it always happens, things happen all at once, the carrier was broken, so she had to buy a new one, then she had to get medicine and all this on foot, because my friend didn't have a car, and she doesn't even speak Italian, so a little bit she had to improvise. Anyway, she was great, Mazinga is fine, everything was done, went to the vet, took medicine, administered medicine, cuddled and so on and so forth.

Now, I of course reimbursed her for the expenses incurred and well, every now and then I ask her, tell me when you get the money, and she said the money has not arrived. But how strange! Yet already more than a week since I sent it. And well, then yesterday the mystery was revealed. What happened?

It happened that when her bank saw this money coming, but we are talking about little stuff, 100€, from an Italian account to her account in London, they were suspicious because in the reason for the payment I wrote, in English of course, thank you for taking care of Sputnik and Mazinga, and in reimbursement of what you spent to take care of Sputnik and Mazinga.
And well, the bank, who knows what they imagined that there was an international traffic, terrorism, killers, so they contacted my bank asking for explanations, my bank didn't spun it off, just ignored them and whereupon her bank contacted her on the phone to ask, can you explain to us what this payment is for? Why was this amount paid? Who are Sputnik and Mazinga? They thought it was, what do I know, payment for a killer who for 100€ kills you two people? Must be the cheapest killer in this world. Then, I mean, if I really wanted to do something shady, first of all I don't send you money from my bank account to your bank account with full name all over it, and then maybe I would use names, what do I know, Roberto and Marco, not Sputnik and Mazinga who don't really stand out.

Anyway, once my friend explained that it was the cat who was sick, the banker had a big laugh, in fact he asked how the cat was doing, he is glad the cat is fine. So bravo to this zealous banker and be careful when making international deposits what you write in the reason for payment.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 691 Educazione sessuale? No, c'è la chiesa.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

When my son came home one day from the first grade, actually the preschool, he brought home one of the assignments, it was an A4 sheet of paper with drawings and diagrams, and in these diagrams there were arrows with spaces to write words, and his assignment was to name, put labels to all those parts, they were body parts, and respectively they were parts of the male and female sexual apparatus. So as early as the very first, before even the first grade, sex education is taught in Australia.

Now, my son went through the first twelve years of schools in Australia, and every year in some way, they were reintroduced to the teaching of sex education, of course, what they had them do to the five, six-year-old kids was then very different from what they did later on when they were teenagers, but this is to say that in societies that are not controlled by the Catholic church, where sex education is such an unbelievable taboo that you are even afraid to say the word sex education and when you somehow try to do it, it is called intimacy education, feelings education, affectivity education, instead of sex education.

The word 'sex' is not a dirty word, we should say it without problems, and we should normalise sexuality. Perhaps that is the problem anyway in Italian society that does not even allow automatic machines that distribute condoms, to prevent pregnancies, it is forbidden to put them inside schools, while in other societies this does not happen.

As I said, in Italy we live heavily, we live heavily the pressures exerted politically by the Catholic church that still enjoys many privileges that are not only economic in the sense that the Catholic church does not pay property taxes that instead we ordinary mortals have to pay and many other things, it also still enjoys benefits that are actually political, deciding how we should behave in this which, at least as far as I remember, is a secular country even if then looking in the classrooms where the crucifix hangs a person might also have doubts.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

We Italians like particularly to ape everything that is done in the United States, without even realising sometimes that what they do is something that had its origins in Europe. Think a little bit about Halloween. Every year, hell will break loose, ah these American customs! But what Americans and Americans! It is a holiday that couldn't be more European. It is a holiday that has been celebrated since the dawn of time throughout the Christian world, and it is the feast of All Saints' Day, which then went to the United States, changed its name, got re-packaged for us, and sent it back home.

There, now we're trying our best to start aping Thanksgiving too, which this yes, is an American holiday, made it up by the Pilgrim fathers who had fled to the new continent for religious matters, as always, and it's a time at the end of November when you give thanks for the harvest and then, by extension, also for all the good things that you have received, anyway you know it too because if you have ever seen an American movie set at that time you see the whole family around the table, thanking for this and thanking for that.
Now, sneakily, in my opinion, this is creeping in here to us as well. I remember a very hilarious episode of that fantastic series, which more than a television series is a documentary, yes, I'm talking about Boris, where the scriptwriters were stealing left and right stories written in English that were not known in Italy, and to repurpose an episode set in America on Thanksgiving, they had translated it into the 'feast of thankyou' so they made up this thing, sneaking sneakily, the 'feast of thankyou' during which pigeons are eaten, now I think is sneaking into our traditions as well.

Why? Well, because we like to ape everything they do over there, we feel like it's who knows what, we want to repurpose it ourselves. It also happens with a lot of words: the famous 'summit' is spelt 'summit' because it is a Latin word that we found awful when it was just Latin, however we like it a lot now that it has become an English word, we have reabsorbed it into our language and we talk about summit referring to the very Latin summit.
I don't know why I am telling you this. It's an inspiration that came to me this morning, I wanted to wish you all a happy feast of thankyou, since we are also already starting to talk about the 'we moment'.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 689 Bidet o gabinetto giapponese?

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

In all the years that I have lived abroad, outside of Italy, one of the things that I have
missed most of all is the bidet.

There are some nations that don't use bidets, in fact, come to think of it I think the great
majority of nations do not use bidets and there are very few that do.

When a person gets used to having a bidet then it is hard to get unused to it. It is clear that for all the years I lived abroad I was getting by as best I could, so showers, basins, etc., however, let's say the convenience of having the bidet, I don't understand why there are still companies that don't embrace this technology so ancient, yet so-so useful.

Now, during my recent trip to Japan, I had a chance to experiment, Once again, Japanese toilets that have built-in bidets not only have the bidet but they have a lot of other things built in.

Unfortunately, I have never seen a Japanese toilet with instructions with the English translation, so let's say I always kind of guessed. All Japanese toilets have bidet spray that can be adjusted to fountain or bidet mode there is just the design of the butt, two half circles one to the side to the other, then some have what is called 'privacy' because they had noticed in Japan that a lot of water was being wasted, because people in order not to make people feel peeing or other things kept flushing down the toilet, so he would wasted a lot of water, now there is a button you push it and it makes the noise of water coming down the toilet flush, so it covers other body noises, then there is even the volume, you can turn up the volume, turn down the volume.

Then another thing that all Japanese toilets have is something that from the beginning
leaves you a little bit like that, but then you get used to it, it's the heated tablet that when you
you get up at night to go pee let's say it's good to find the tablet heated. Even here you can adjust, I remember in one hotel the tablet was too hot, that is, it was not hot, however, it was definitely hotter than I wanted it to be try, so I lowered it.

So the bidet is incorporated into the Japanese toilet, however, in my opinion, it does not replace, at least for physiology, the way we women are, it doesn't replace the bidet our because if you visualize we sit in the bidet straddling, so water comes in front of us, whereas in the Japanese bidet, there is this spray that comes to you from back, and it is difficult for us women to clean the front, so having to choose I always choose to have toilet and bidet, however if there is no space to put the bidet better the Japanese toilet than nothing.

  • 3' grezzi Ep. 688 Delle domeniche
    Domenica pigra e transitoria.

    TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below]

    TRANSLATION

I am on the balcony window. No, you can't say 'I'm on the balcony window,' I'm on the balcony.

It's Sunday afternoon and I hear voices, maybe you hear them too, however, I don't see anyone on the street, so evidently someone who, like that, is celebrating inside a house or under my balcony, in a spot that I can't see from here, I'm on the fourth floor so I don't even think it's appropriate to lean too far out.

It's a Sunday, let's say a day of passage, because I've just returned from a vacation and so I'm getting back in touch with the house. Then, by the way, in the weeks that I've been away winter has come, so I've also been doing the closet change, which is a fundamental step to be able to put on something to go out or at least to feel comfortable, at least for me it is a fundamental step, and every time I do the closet change I make it a point to limit the number of garments. But I've already talked about it though, I think I even talked about it not too long ago, maybe before I went on vacation.

And anyway, it's a beautiful day because, although the temperature has dropped significantly, however let's say we still have the highs of 21, and 22, tomorrow I think it's going to be as high as 23 degrees. Today I went among other things to take a walk on the beach and that's always something that cheers me up: if I sit there having an aperitif and thinking, but how lucky we are to live in a place where even in winter you can safely sit in the sun because the sun warms, it's not like some northern countries.

So I'm getting back in touch with my habits and my world here, with all that goes with it.
Cold season, in fact, there are already quite a few people who have colds and various other ailments, but they are called seasonal ills for a reason because they come with the season, so I won't complain too much.

You can maybe also hear in the background Mazinga the cat that whenever she sees me talking with the phone in my hand, I now have the phone in my hand to count the minutes, I don't know, she wants to be stroked and if I only make the mistake of stroking her, then she sticks on me and she doesn't come off anymore and the stroking she asks for in a very very violent way because if I start stroking her head and then I stop, with her little hand, with her little paw and with her little nails, she makes me understand that maybe I better continue because it's something that gives her a lot of pleasure.

And then, lo and behold, here she is already coming at me with her little paw and scratching me. Mazinga Stop it! Maybe I'd better close up and devote some time to my cat who also felt my absence.
