In 2018, a transport officer was tasked to transport two inmates to a mental-health care clinic in the midst of Hurricane Florence. The two inmates were held by court order as dangerous to themselves and others. The transport officers, following directions from their supervisors and national guard deployed the disaster area became trapped in floodwaters. They stayed with the vehicle and attempted to release or rescue the inmates inside the van but were unable to. The inmates both drown. An officer involved have been convicted of deliberate indifference and faces the rest of his life in prison.
