What's up with the fascination around scammers? We've got the TINDER SWINDLER's trending Netflix documentary, Anna Delvey's new Netflix Shondaland hit, Billy McFarland of Fyre Festival infamy, and a host of tv and movies devoted to the con-man genre. Why do we love to hate them? Why are we so intrigued? What are lessons we can take away from hearing these stories?
For a lighter episode, we set aside the global news to dive into the current cultural obsession with scammers.
Have you watched any of the above movies/documentaries? We'd love to hear your thoughts on them! [email protected] or @30andconfused.pod on Instagram.

"He's so toxic!" "That's abusive!" "She's such a narcissist!" What if the concept of "toxic" is toxic in itself? Today's episode dives into the language we use, how the words in our cultural lexicon have become more extreme in creating distinctions and grabbing people's attention. On the flip side, today's younger generations are more aware of mental issues; however, this can often lead to self diagnoses (sometimes to our detriment). We live in a cancel culture, so the moment we don’t like something we can write it off as toxic/abusive. Have you experienced this either from doing so yourself or have you witnessed a friend of yours do this? The word “toxic” has lost its power whereas "toxic" people are everywhere and we HAVE to get rid of them. Are we moving towards self-victimization where the problem is always outside ourselves and never our responsibility, or are we just finally putting words to what "it" is?
Cass & Elise are exploring all these questions. Press play, take a listen, and let us know what you think!

- The United States and Russia squaring off at the U.N. Security Council over Ukraine, with Washington calling Moscow’s actions a threat to international peace and security, while a Kremlin envoy ridiculed Monday’s meeting as a “PR stunt.”
- Our thoughts on the Spotify / Joe Rogan saga. Joe Rogan has pledged to try harder to offer more balanced views on his podcast, after he was criticised by Neil Young and Joni Mitchell for helping to spread Covid misinformation
- North Korea has released photographs which it said were taken from its most powerful missile launch in five years, raising alarm in the international community.
- Our take on TikTok's trend of "Main Character Energy." With more than 5.2bn views of the app’s #maincharacter hashtag – psychologists say the trend has gained momentum because lockdown and the feelings of isolation that come with it have created a gap once plugged by social connection.

Have you heard of the "bystander effect?" What about the stoic idea of "radical candor?"
In this episode we discuss the idea of Radical Candor from stoic philosophy, what being radically candid means for our more personal relationships and how this idea shapes how we communicate with our partners, our friends, and our colleagues.
For the news, we cover:
- Facebook's new ambitions to build a "metaverse."
- Reiner Fuellmich, a German lawyer specialising in corporate fraud, has vowed to put world leaders and leading scientists in the dock for supposedly engineering a fake pandemic. He’s become the great hope of the global coronavirus conspiracy scene.
- A Singaporean TikToker's viral video and group chat that acted as a "yelp review" for men on dating apps in the city, and a community to warn other girls of potentially dangerous men. We get into discussing the pros and cons of something like this existing, and our own dating app experiences in Amsterdam (as well as our own group chat dedicated to warning friends and friends of friends about men we've encountered in the city to stay away from).
Trigger warning: sexual assault.
- A woman on a train near Philadelphia was raped publicly and no one did anything or called the police. We dive into the "bystander effect," a personal experience where we've experienced this effect, and perhaps something you can do to make sure you are never a "bystander."
As always, we'd love to hear your thoughts! [email protected]
