Matilda Rooney, a woman in her seventies from Illinois, died during the night of Christmas Eve in 1885. Her remains were almost completely burned, weighing just 12 pounds. Matilda appeared to have burned to death in the kitchen, with no clear explanation as to how the fire started. Her husband, Patrick Rooney, who had been sleeping in the couple’s bedroom near the kitchen, also died that night due to smoke and fumes from the fire.
