  • '500 a week': Uptick in scammers targeting vulnerable people's super

A shocking superannuation scam has cost a Queensland woman $406,000.

The 74-year-old had six unauthorised withdrawals taken from her account and it took AustralianSuper nearly a week to act, even after the woman raised the alarm.

Detective Superintendent Craig McGrath from the Queensland Police Financial and Cyber Crime Group told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Well, last year, we had 25 and a half thousand [scams]."

"It works out to about 500 a week and the average loss is about 14,000, so it's an enormous amount."

"Aside from the financial part, the impact, as you can imagine, the impact on people's lives, their mental stress, their relationships, all that sort of is enormous," Superintendent McGrath said.

  • Rebranding or establishing: Mark Butler quizzed over 'new' mental health centres

The Federal Government has continued its health splurge with a further one billion dollars into mental health which is on top of Albanese's $8 billion Medicare promise.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "We're using the well-trusted Medicare brand, telling people essentially, this is free of charge."

"You don't have to bring a credit card, because a lot of these people are on very low incomes, usually fixed incomes."

"This has meant we're actually getting to the people we need."

"It was well worth the money, in my view," Mr. Butler said.

  • 'It's not fair': Uni student marked down for not including Acknowledgement of Country speaks out

A 4BC listener has revealed that her daughter, who is studying Diversity, Crime and Justice, received demerit points for not including an Acknowledgement of Country in an assessment.

The student told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I [felt] quite annoyed because I go off the criteria sheet and whatever's on there I address and the fact that it was not on a criteria sheet and I still got marked down for it."

"That's pretty annoying, especially since I'm paying 60 grand for this degree."

"It's really not fair," she said.

Her mother declared, "it's actually bullying, it does feel quite threatening and it needs to be stamped out so that's why I was speaking up about it."

  • '3 to 5 years': Queenslander farmers facing long road to record after flooding

It's been a tough year so far for Queenslander farmers with recent floods impacting over 30 million hectares of land and more than 150,000 head of livestock lost.

For many families, this has completely wiped out their livelihoods.

That’s where Farm Angels has stepped in to deliver financial and mental health support.

Farm Angels CEO Jason Law told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Quite a few are yet to get back to their properties."

"On a lot of the recovery meetings they're still trying to work out how to access it but we know that the statistics say that it takes three to five years to recover from any single event and for every year of extreme drought."

"Now remember that a lot of these farmers have been through extreme drought so they're still recovering from that essentially in terms of debt and the like and now they've been faced with this," Mr. Law said.
