Rain continues to fall in North Queensland with flash flooding and over 700mm of rain falling overnight in some places.

9News Queensland Weather Reporter Garry Youngberry told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "As the rivers sort of continue to fill up from inland and burst their banks, that's when we see the river flooding occur."

"There'll be releases from the dams, even last night, the one around Townsville was at 163%."

The Bureau of Meteorology has recorded 24hr rainfalls across North Queensland with 571mm at Paluma Dam, 501mm at Paluma town, 702mm at Rollingstone, 449mm at Bluewater and 437mm at Toolakea.

Emergency alerts have been issued for residents in between Mackay and Cairns with many being told to leave their homes.

Premier David Crisafulli told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Already, we've had the Defence Force and we got approval yesterday for some of their aerial assets."

"They'll be an important part of the recovery," he said.

"The decision to pre-position was the right one and my thanks go to those people, whether or not they're emergency services personnel or state agency."

The economy, cost-of-living and inflation are all playing a key role in the lead up to the federal election.

The latest inflation figures have sparked fresh debate about whether or not the worst is over for Australians.

Shadow Treasurer Angus Taylor told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast the Coalition will be planning to solve the economy, "By reining in wasteful spending that fuels inflation, reducing tax, red tape and control of union bosses over small businesses."

"We won't get distracted by a referendum where we spend 18 months with the Prime Minister thinking and talking about nothing else other than his divisive ideas for Australia."

"Making sure we've got cheaper energy by getting the balance right and affordable homes, by getting rid of the red tape that's making it difficult to build anything in this country," the Shadow Treasurer said.

The Hoodoo Gurus are in Australia for their Back to the Stone Age tour more than 40 years since they first burst onto the scene.

Singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist and Australia rock legend Dave Faulkner told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "It is pretty crazy to think about it when we started, we only thought as far as pretty much the next week."

"I think we're pretty lucky."

"It's gone on to completely ridiculous lengths where we've been playing all over the world and obviously more than a few dozen people," Faulkner said.

One Nation Leader Senator Pauline Hanson told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I believe the way it's going now, the Liberals are on the cusp of winning it."

Australia's latest inflation figures were released yesterday which show the rate is at a three-year low of 3.2 per cent.

Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "

I acknowledge that the cost of living pressures aren't over, but what we've been able to do together as Australians is get that inflation down and get wages up and keep unemployment low."

"And that does give me a bit of confidence about the year ahead."

"We've worked around the clock to try and turn things around, but we know that it's not yet mission accomplished because so many of your listeners are still under the pump," Jim Chalmers said.
