5 Magazine DJ Mixes, Podcasts and Free House Music

Kaspar is one of our favorite DJs and after camping on search terms in anticipation of catching his latest mix wherever it might pop up we're thrilled to present a cover mix for 5 Mag Issue 195.

This mix was dreamt up first but ultimately came last — our interview in this same issue was so interesting to put together that the mix almost became an afterthought. But it came out better than we could have imagined — leaping from genre to genre, with a common thread of swing & groove.

Kaspar was a resident DJ at Lisbon's legendary Frágil — "the closest thing you could get to the perfect night club," he says — from 1999 until it closed in 2012, from ages 16 to 29. "It was a really lucky break, I was a kid. I mixed like Jeff Mills and scratched like Roc Raida but had the maturity of a green banana. In hindsight I was lucky both for that opportunity and also that I hadn't crashed and burnt by the time I was 30. I'm glad that I am, at least, wise enough now to recognize that."

"I've always felt the best DJs are those out of the hype loops," he says. "I was never a part of the beautiful people in that sense and thank fuck for that as most of these people's music is bland and tastes like you're eating cardboard." Here is a DJ mix that doesn't.

One of Chicago's finest: Ed Nine is a DJ, producer and remixer and one of our favorite artists in the city. The last few years have been kind, with international recognition thanks to a series of brilliant and well-received records on Jorge Caiado's Inner Balance (The Journey Vol 1 and Vol 2), Kai Alcé;'s NDATL (Deep Concentration), Plastik People (Keeps Me Dancing), Robsoul (All My Life with Kid Enigma), the compilation Tales From Chicago and remixes for Ron Trent ("Dancin'" on Headphoniq) and Roland Clark ("President's House" on Street King).

His own Groove Access label is coming out with their first vinyl releases since 2016 with Dan Ryan & Ed Nine's Distant Reality 12" and the V/A Chicago Is Home featuring Chicago Skyway, Kid Enigma, Dan Ryan and Ed Nine. Both are forthcoming this summer along with a new record called "Let Me Be" on Midway Hustle.

Ed dropped this three hour mix for our Sanctify series, featuring deep house like we love it from the people who do it best. Some love can be sent to djednine.com and grooveaccess.net.

5 Mag welcomes legendary producer and DJ Ashley Beedle for the second installment of SANCTIFY, showcasing the greatest deep house DJs on Planet Earth.

With SANCTIFY we wanted to get "back to basics — back to the fundamentals of deep house with the DJs who believe in the mysterious and awesome spiritual power of deep house music."

Ashley Beedle is one of our inspirations at 5 Mag. We probably wouldn't be doing this individually or collectively if not for being reached by Ashley's records as a solo artist, with X-Press 2, Black Jazz Chronicles, Ballistic Brothers and of course Black Science Orchestra. And we're far from the only people in the scene who can say that.

We're also thrilled to announce in our latest issue that Black Science Orchestra is reforming for their "sixth incarnation" with a new remix out ("Ghosts" by The Spaces Between featuring legendary house music vocalist Harry Dennis) on F-star-CLR.

5 Mag is launching our latest mix series, and volume 1 makes up this issue's cover mix.

We wanted to get back to basics, back to the fundamentals of deep house. SANCTIFY is that series, showcasing the greatest deep house DJs on Earth — the adept practitioners who believe in the mysterious and awesome spiritual power of deep house music.

This series is by invitation only, and our first invite went out to our friend **Brawther**. You can also read our feature story with him elsewhere in the latest issue of 5 Mag.

After learning of the death of phenomenal UK producer and DJ Phil Asher (aka Phlash, aka Restless Soul) we dug through our archives to find this mix, sent to us probably on a CDR back in 2008. We published it along with our first feature interview with Phil Asher in September 2008. Here we remember Phil Asher doing what he did best: DJing.

#RIP Phil and healing to all his family, friends and everyone he touched with his music.

LOADED! vol 4 welcomes back the amazing T. Williams, the inspiring tastemaker, DJ, producer and remixer. T. Williams can be heard on RinseFM and has released flawless tracks on Strictly Rhythm, Local Action, Madhouse, Conch and Island, for whom he remixed Disclosure's "Latch" on their smash Settle LP. This is a 30 minute vinyl-only set of house and garage.
