5 Magazine DJ Mixes, Podcasts and Free House Music

Chicago's Redux DJs are Carlos Torres and Matt Wyser, staples on the scene and among the inspiring folks who keep the city moving, even in times like these.

Redux has put together a special mix they wanted to share with us, and us with all of you. The mix is "reflective of the current state but with a message of love," featuring spoken words from James Baldwin, Malcolm X, President Obama and others. With his events Blender, SHFFT, and You Are Here on temporary hiatus due to the current global situation, Shmoo has steadfastly refused to rest on his laurels. Instead of meeting the moment with resignation and excuses like, "still trying to figure out my next move," Shmoo has taken his act to Twitch, offering a Thursday night "party" where he alternates between his own stream and the so-called "Voltron-of-parties:" Oops, Too Soon? — where Chicago's "Thursday night DJ crew" unites for an all night "raid party" stream.

Given the unavailability of "live" club mixes during these trying times, Shmoo records his streams to offer a slice of the current state of the scene in Chicago. Not the typical "slow build" mix one would expect in a club setting, Shmoo comes out of the gate swinging— taking you on an uptempo journey ranging from the UK sound of the early '90s all the way to present day Chicago.

His latest release is Free Shmoo from the fantastic label Love Notes - https://www.juno.co.uk/products/free-shmoo-feat-garrett-david-remix/671067-01/

We're back again with a new mix from a DJ/producer whose sound we've long admired, Chile's Jorge C.

"Rhythm is the foundation for Chilean producer and DJ Jorge C," his bio begins, and a cursory listen makes it hard to argue with that. Through his label Ojodeapolo he's explored the multifaceted sounds of Chicago house and Detroit house, giving a platform to many of the genre's giants known and unsung, from Rick Wade to Hieroglyphic Being, Chicago Skyway to Kai Alcé.

He's also released his own music on labels including Matrix Recordings (Detroit), DeepArtSounds (Zürich) and Dopeness Galore (Amsterdam) as well as Ojodeapolo.cl. As a performer and DJ Jorge C. has traveled to various places in South America including D-Edge in Sao Paulo, Paloma Bar in Berlin and also in Japan.

5 Mag did a teardown of a track from Jorge C.'s latest release, Brother, which features remixes by Alton Miller and Terrence Parker. You can pick up a copy on wax from Clone - https://clone.nl/item58286.html

An architect by profession, Crâne de Poule @cranedepoule studied music at the conservatory when she was younger playing the violin and percussion for a decade and in recent years ventured into music production and live performances. Those early classical and jazz influences can be found in her music productions as she oscillates between Techno and House, performing live, with her keys, analogue synths and drum machines. Recording over live takes also made sure that each moment she captures is off-the-cuff and in the moment.

Later this year, Crâne de Poule will be joining the Integrity roster with a debut release on the label’s ‘The Other Side’ Vol 2 Compilation.
