Ripped out of the pages of the latest issue of 5 Mag: DJ Rocca, the Italian sensation and a man for whom the phrase "genre-defying" was made for. It may be a cliche to say this in any other context, but DJ Rocca truly has a sound that can only be described as "adventurous" - an ear that can take in all manner and styles of music and a soul that can synthesize it into something special. We're thrilled to have him talk about DJing in the current issue of 5 Mag (available to subscribers and coming soon everywhere) and premiere this new 5 Mag Mix. ✌️😍

Legendary Brazilian DJ, producer and disco luminary DJ Meme @dj-meme is no stranger to 5 Mag. Having graced our cover and our pages many times over, we thought to have him back after a lengthy absence. Recently releasing his own remix of 1979’s ‘Dancer’ single by the don that is Gino Soccio, he is still very much in the game of showing how you do disco right.

From Hastings at the very southern tip of England: Station H is a freewheeling House Music podcast hosted by 5 Magazine’s Will Sumsuch with special guests in conversation, and zero editing.

For this year’s annual Station H catchup at the Brighton Music Conference (BMC), Will Sumsuch and Richard Earnshaw are joined by fellow 5 Mag author Harold Heath, Massi Deeka (Strictly Underground Music) and music industry veteran and Brighton DJ Nick Titchener.

After finding a corner in a somewhat noisy ante-room off the main conference drag (with staff coming and going throughout), the crew discuss Richard Earnshaw’s debut appearance on a BMC panel, the distance between appearance and reality in the music business, and how holding in a poop, might just be the key to playing a truly great DJ set.

Other topics skimmed over include:

As creators and curators, are we now at war with the algorithm?

Why are we still talking about a lack of diversity in electronic music? What should be done, and who should do it?

The incredible statistic that the week following Record Store Day 2019 was the highest selling week for vinyl since 1991. Does that statistic tell the whole story?

There is an underlying honesty to music made and played by @manueltur . On his own productions it comes through as breathtaking simplicity, a clean and deeply compelling approach to making deep house music.

By aesthetic this sort of music belongs on @freerangerecords so we shouldn't be too surprised that Manuel Tur would make something of a home for himself (and for his side project Clavis) on Jimpster's acclaimed deep house imprint. His latest - Organic Reach EP - marks his first solo release on the label in five years.

It also shouldn't surprise us to find his studio habits spilling over into his DJ style. A Manuel Tur set is about music selection over effects - as on his original productions, his style is characterized as "clear and straight-forward without tons of tricks. Both at the studio and the club, an EQ is still the most powerful tool we have."

Belgian label Melodymathics first came to our attention with a mix of eclectic records on wax - a strange 10" series featuring artists like Demuir, Terrence Parker, Dan Curtin, Gari Romalis, Alex Agore and Melodymann himself. These 10" records, some 12" records and digital tracks have since become a fixture in 5 Mag's review section and the sets of discriminating DJs worldwide.

Melodymathics is run by Melodymann in tandem with Sabina Baert, and we're pleased to premiere his new 5 Mag Mix. Check the latest issue of 5 Mag or 5mag.net for our interview with Melodymann for The Culture, our series of talks with DJs on DJing.
