Five Things You Can Do to Prevent Cognitive Decline and Cultivate an “Ageless Brain”

* Avoid Sugar – Prioritize Whole FoodsRefined sugars can accelerate brain aging. Fuel your brain with nutrient-dense, whole foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, and fiber. Eat carbohydrates in their whole state only. Fats in their whole state in the foods are best. Eliminate ultraprocessed foods. Stop alcohol. Get at least a fasting insulin level and HgA1C “shooting” for a level of 5 or below for both are excellent targets to suggest good blood sugar control and good insulin sensitivity - the opposite of insulin resistance (meaning your body produces and needs more insulin to “push” sugar into the cell).

* Exercise DailyMovement boosts blood flow, reduces inflammation, and stimulates neurogenesis. You are stimulating BDNF (brain derived neurotrophic factor). Aim for at least 60 minutes a day, mixing cardio, strength, and flexibility. Ideally cardio daily for 60 minutes. Strength training 20 minutes 3-4 x per week. Circuit training is simple form strength training. You don’t need a personal trainer to do it. Just look and read the diagrams on the machines. Do 6 arm/6 leg exercises. 6-10 repetition each. Walk between exercise machines. Sometimes I have done that routine in 5-10 minutes. Google on your phone a 10 minute yoga or stretching and do it 1-2 times daily. You will surprised at what 10 minutes of simple yoga will do.

* Get 7–8 Hours of Quality SleepDeep sleep is when your brain cleans house—clearing out toxins and consolidating memory. Prioritize a consistent, calming sleep routine. This is my weak link. I am working on it…

* Challenge Your Brain in Fun WaysPuzzles, learning a new skill, music, reading, dance or anything that engages your mind helps build cognitive resilience. Go back to school and learn something you really want to learn.

* Reduce Overwhelming StressChronic stress can shrink areas of the brain. Incorporate tools like meditation, breath-work, nature walks, or therapy to reset your nervous system. * Stay Socially Connected: Prioritize community, family, and meaningful relationships.

* Support Gut Health: A healthy gut microbiome plays a surprising role in mental clarity and mood. Whole fiber rich foods (no altered fats or sugars). Avoid antibiotics and unnecessary medications as much as possible. Avoid ULTRA PROCESSED FOODS. Simple EAT WHOLE FOODS containing natural fats and complexed sugars in the whole food.

Kirk Update…

Doing well after a “rocky” week. I think it is going to be 5 steps forward and 1 step back for a while with a gradual upward trend over the next couple of months. Had some fluid (40 cc) drawn off my belly (4/10/25) above the mesh and below my incision scar from the ventral hernia repair (3/20/25) and original right hemi-colectomy scar (1/16/25) that removed 12 inches of colon and the tumor (8 cm adenocarcinoma). Even though I am pretty thin still 150 ish I produce a lot of serous fluid for some reason in my abdomen after both surgeries. But it’s getting less. Also I have been wearing an abdominal support that is 10 inches wide/high that wraps around me with the hopes that it helps me not move to fast and suddenly allowing the fascia via the mesh to heal. I used it religiously the first two weeks but after all the bandages and stereostrips were removed, even though I wear a tee shirt (sometimes two) in between my skin and the wrap it was almost like the skin was being rubbed against the mesh and irritating something inside. It created a mild burn and I could almost imagine an “crinking” or “wrinkling” of mesh. It was creating a soreness and I can feel areas of point tenderness and a few lumps and bumps. Also wierd, while I thought it was just caused by maybe the tightness of the support moving my skin over the mesh, it happens after I eat a big meal. And I have been eating a lot! So I have not worn the wrap for a few days and it kind of feels better. Sitting and twisting can cause tweaks as does sometimes eating food….a lot of it. So will see my surgeon again on April 21 and my prediction is he will probably draw off some more fluid, but the mild burning and irritation pain is going to be less.

I saw my gastroenterologist (4/8/25) and wanted to know if I could still be bleeding from the original colectomy surgery because I did have some occult blood show up on a stool analysis in February (2025), and, I have a slowly improving anemia that I have had for almost a year now and microscopic bleeding from the colon cancer probably approaching two years. She says it is not uncommon to have some microscopic bleeding for months after the surgery and iron deficiency anemia’s and iron stores can take up to a year or so to normalize. I also asked her how she would follow me into the future. And it would be a six month colonoscopy and if all is good then yearly. So I scheduled purposely my first post-op colonoscopy on September 26, 2025 because that is exactly two years from the date of my original colonoscopy that found the tumor on September 26, 2023…And it will be clear and look healthy! Already imaging and feeling the emotions of graditude, relief, confidence, strength… that the cancer is gone…done. I am scheduled from the oncologist to have CT scan of my abomen, chest and pelvis in July/August 2025. At this point I plan on continuing my repurposed drugs (Ivermectin, Mebendazole, Fenbendazole) at lower doses, a considerable amount of nutraceuticals, IV vitamin C 25 gms 1-2 x week, meditation daily and eating whole foods. It will be interesting to see if I “migrate” back to a more whole food plant based diet or do what I am doing now which is consume some animal daily. We’ll see. A work in progress.

P.S. I don’t write about my journey because I am some narcacist or egomaniac. I write for two reasons mainly. One people ask me all the time how I am doing and in newsletter responses people thank me for letting them know how I am doing. Also if someone can learn from my journey, my ups and downs, how I made decisions and it helps them create their own path to healing then I am happy to share. There is no one path…P.P.S. I forgot to mention most importantly. A major part of my healing is finding a better way for me to share information and have it become part of my livelihood. This Substack platform of sharing information is a way for me to do that. I have been taking a nine session Abundance course from Dr. Joe Dispenza and we had to write to “one liners” about who and what you want. Fasting and the Longevity Revolution. How everyday nutrition and fasting can prevent and treat many diseases while keeping people younger. Documentary. Clinical Pearl: I just watched it. Very sound science. Proven practical application. Diets should be mostly whole food plant based up to the age of 65 or 70. Then more animal protein should be consumed. Dr. Valter Longo's latest documentary is titled "Fasting and the Longevity Revolution." This film explores the impact of fasting and nutrition on aging and chronic diseases, highlighting the interplay between unhealthy food, pharmaceutical industries, and the healthcare system. The documentary takes viewers from the longevity-rich regions of Calabria and Sardinia in Italy to Milan, Genoa, Los Angeles, and the mountainous areas of southern Ecuador .​

Under Age 65:

Goal: Maximize longevity, prevent chronic disease, and maintain metabolic health.

Diet Guidelines:

* Primarily plant-based diet: Focus on legumes, whole grains, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil.

* Low but sufficient protein intake: About 0.31 to 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight (around 0.7 to 0.8 grams per kg). Protein mostly from plant sources.

* Minimal sugars and saturated fats.

* High nourishment, low calories: Eat nutrient-dense foods without excess calories.

* Periodic fasting: Do the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) 2–3 times a year (5-day low-calorie, plant-based plan) to promote regeneration and reduce risk factors for aging and disease.

* Time-restricted eating: Consume food within a 12-hour window each day (e.g., 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

Over Age 65:

Goal: Preserve muscle mass, strength, and immune function, while still supporting healthy aging.

Diet Guidelines:

* Slightly increased protein intake: Especially if experiencing weight or muscle loss. Protein can now include more high-quality animal sources (like fish, eggs, low-fat dairy), while still favoring plants.

* Continue plant-based emphasis: But with flexibility to support caloric and protein needs.

* Use FMD more selectively: Only under medical supervision and less frequently—usually 1–2 times per year if healthy and not underweight.

* Maintain 12-hour eating window: But avoid long fasting if underweight or frail.

* Focus on adequate calorie intake: Especially if there's unintentional weight loss or chronic illness.

Dr. Longo emphasizes that individual context matters—these are general guidelines, and adjustments should be made based on body weight, health status, activity level, and medical conditions.

Two of his books:The Longevity Diet (2018) This international bestseller introduces the concept of the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) and outlines a mostly plant-based diet with periodic fasting to promote longevity and reduce disease risk. The book includes 30 recipes and practical guidelines for implementing the diet.​Fasting Cancer (2025) In this recent publication, Dr. Longo discusses how the FMD can enhance the effectiveness of cancer therapies while reducing their toxicity. The book also covers how the Longevity Diet and plant-based ketogenic diets can support cancer treatment.

TINNITUS - Foods That Lower Tinnitus Risk—and Those That Trigger It. New research found that some high quality food groups may offer protection from tinnitus. By Mary West. EPOCH Times, 4/8/2025. 1) Global Prevalence and Incidence of TinnitusA Systematic Review and Meta-analysis. Clinical Pearl: About 14% of adults ave some form of tinnitus. Some people have noted an increase post-Covid illness or injections. A trial of Ivermectin, LDN, Nattokinase, bromelain, curcumin for 2-3 months would be reasonable in that case. 2) Association of 15 common dietary factors with tinnitus: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. Clinical Pearl: I haven’t looked at VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System) Red Boxes in about 6 months. I used to look at them every day. It is believed the real statistics are much higher. Just looking at the upsurge of deaths in 2022. That one year is greater than all previous years as far as deaths from vaccines or medications. That is when the vaccine was rolled out. It’s obvious the Covid vaccine are the culprit…Yet these toxic agents are still being pushed daily. JUST CLICK ON ON THE U.S. TERRITORY BUTTON to see U.S. statistics versus the International. You can look at the stats in the boxes but keep scrolling down until you get to deaths. From 1990 to 2020. Then the huge spike in 2021. That is when the vaccines were given at their maximum distribution. Life insurances companies noted 10-40% increase in claims starting with this time period. And again these figures are a “gross underestimation” of the deaths. Most physicians and health professionals don’t take the time to fill out the VAERS questionnaire. I know I never have.
